Moral equivalence is a term used in political debate, usually to characterize in a negative way the claim that there can be no moral or ethical hierarchy decided between two sides in a conflict, nor in the actions or tactics of the two sides.

The term has some limited currency in polemic debates about the Cold War, and more currently, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. "Moral equivalence" arose as a polemic term-of-retort to "moral relativism," which had been gaining use as an indictment against political foreign policy that appeared to use only a situation-based application of widely-held ethical standards.

While yes.... Isreal is killing civilians....they are not trying too. If it happens it is on accident.... trying to kill a Hezbullah fighter....

Hezbullah is just shooting rockets at civilians......

There is NO moral equivalance............

Hezbullah wants to kill civilians

Isreal Doesnt....................

MODERN ISRAEL IS NOT THE ISRAEL OF THE BIBLE OR QURAN! MODERN ISRAEL IS A ZIONIST STATE THAT WAS ORGANIZED BY THE ILLUMINATI AFTER WORLD WAR II TO LEAD UP TO WORLD WAR III!! THIS HAS BEEN PLANNED OUT FOR A LONG LONG TIME!!!

Hey Bong...are you a Zionist supporter? Would you like to just steal someone's land and say "well my people where supposedly here thousands of years ago so fuck off!" Lol. You seem to hate Muslims awfully a lot too son!

Eh, that's what the Palestinians are doing too, saying they've been there for hundreds of years. The fact is, at one time or another, both sides of the issue have valid claims. If you go back far enough though, that land was primarily controlled by Semitic tribes, and the little parcel of land that is Israel is a pale shadow of the area the Semitic tribes once controlled.

I am personally a Zionist. That is, I believe the Jews deserve some piece of land to call their own. 'Zionist' is in no way an insult. It just means you believe that there's a large enough population of Jews to merit being a sovereign nation. (I'd also like the Kurds to have their own nation, but Turkey will never allow that to happen, even if Iraq would.) I am not in any way Jewish (I'm caucasian German/Irish), but I see no reason the Jews can't have their little chunk of land, since their claim on it is as valid as anyone else's, and arguably moreso. The Arabs that attack Israel generally just plain want every Jew on the planet dead. They use land issues and politics and terrorism to work toward that goal, but most rational people see through that.

Are you so BITTER because your ancestor ESAU threw away his birthright to his TWIN brother Jacob for a stupid bowl of SOUP?! Because he did that Judah (the jews) got the crown and Joseph (Ephraim/U.K.-Manasseh/U.S.) got the BIRTHRIGHT! So Esau did it to HIMSELF! At least Jacob VALUED the birthright which Esau DESPISED! Well Bong, you do have a point, the motives and targets are different. And I do pretty much agree with jam's post as well. It's Isreal's apparent wanton disregard for civilian casualties that bothers me. Of course, as G Dubya has demonstrated, civilians don't mean shit. As long as they're on the other side, that is. ;)

For the record:

-I love America
-I hate Bush (as all sensible people who care about this country should)
-I think Bong is cute and cuddly, like a teddy bear. And who could hate a teddy bear?

More spying news from Israel now why would Americas best friend spy on her... hmmmm.. Wheres the Moral equivalancy for spying on your ONLY friend

Report: US sailor spied for Israel
http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1154525834949&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FPrinter

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
David Keyes, THE JERUSALEM POST Aug. 9, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A US Navy sailor, Ariel J. Weinmann, is suspected of spying for Israel and has been held in prison for four months, according to an article published Monday in the Saudi daily Al-Watan. It reported that Weinmann is being held at a military base in Virginia on suspicion of espionage and desertion.

According to the navy, Weinmann was apprehended on March 26 "after it was learned that he had been listed as a deserter by his command." Though initial information released by the navy makes no mention of it, Al-Watan reported that he was returning from an undisclosed "foreign country." American sources close to the Defense Department told Al-Watan that Israel was the country in question

"The US Navy concluded Article 32 proceedings [a pretrial investigation] in the case of Fire Control Technician Third Class Ariel J. Weinmann on July 26, 2006," Ted Brown, a media relations officer at the US Fleet Forces Command, told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday. The US Fleet Forces Command is the "convening authority of the case... and will make the decision with respect to what charges, if any, will be referred to a general court-martial."

The veracity of Al-Watan's claim that Weinmann is suspected of spying for Israel remains in question, and military and Pentagon spokesmen are remaining tightlipped. A public affairs officer at the Office of Naval Intelligence told the Post that he was unaware of the allegations against Weinmann.

Al-Watan speculated that if Weinmann spied on behalf of the Mossad, it would be the biggest espionage case since Jonathan Pollard's arrest. Pollard, who worked as a civilian intelligence analyst for the US Navy, was caught in 1985 and convicted of spying for Israel. He is currently serving a life sentence in the US.

According to the navy, "Weinmann was assigned to the USS Albuquerque (SSN 706) and had deserted on or about July 3, 2005." The Albuquerque is a Los Angeles-class attack submarine.

Though the navy's initial press release contained no reference to Israel, Brown stated that more detailed information about the case would be released shortly.

Different motives or targets or not, the thing I struggle with is bloodshed and killing of any kind, civilian or otherwise. Seems to me concern for humanity ought to mean avoidance of bloodshed. Period. The cynics will immediately brand me as dreamy or girly or high-minded. But I still think peace for the sake of peace is worth shooting for (no pun intended).

For an addition to the record, I:

- Love America and am thankful every day that I'm lucky enough to participate in a democracy instead of exist under a theocracy or a dictatorship
- Dislike George Bush and what he and his ilk stand for but have a lot of respect for the office he holds and the responsibility that entails
- Find you highly entertaining and funny, Bong. You're passionate and opinionated and, as I discovered last night, chivalrous, too.

The problem is, they want Israel to release hundreds or thousands of really bad people, in return for the few Israeli prisoners they have. And the recidivism rate among prisoners that Israel releases in such trades is huge, like 80 percent or something. E.g., 80 percent of the time Israel releases a prisoner, that person goes out and tries to kill Israelis again. So if Israel *did* agree to the trade, the hundreds of people they released would ultimately kill hundreds of Israelis. Balance the lives of hundreds against the lives of a few, and you get...no trade.

Now if they'd trade equal numbers, I'm sure the Israelis would be glad to do that. Six people for six people, whatever. Even if the six released ended up killing six Israelis later, well, they'd still break even anyway.

I don't see this ending for a while. The Israelis, as a people, seem to be pretty unified now in supporting this military effort to wipe out or severely cripple Hezbollah. In memory of the Americans that Hezbollah has killed, I wish the Israelis the best of luck in their mission.

1983 Beirut barracks bombing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_Beirut_barracks_bombing

A mushroom cloud rises from the rubble of the bombed barracks at Beirut International Airport. The 1983 Beirut barracks bombing was a major incident during the Lebanese Civil War. Two truck bombs struck buildings in Beirut housing U.S. and French members of the Multinational Force in Lebanon, killing hundreds of soldiers, the majority being U.S. Marines. The October 23, 1983, blasts led to the withdrawal of the international peacekeeping force from Lebanon, where they had been stationed since the Israeli invasion in 1982, and it is considered one of the first instances of suicide bombing.

The bombing
On October 23, 1983, around 6:20 am, a yellow Mercedes-Benz delivery truck drove to Beirut International Airport, where the 1st Battalion 8th Marines, under the U.S. 2nd Marine Division of the United States Marines, had set up its local headquarters. The truck turned onto an access road leading to the Marines' compound and circled a parking lot. The driver then accelerated and crashed through a barbed wire fence around the parking lot, passed between two sentry posts, crashed through a gate and barreled into the lobby of the Marine headquarters. The Marine sentries at the gate were forbidden from using live ammuntion, for fear that a discharge might kill a civilian, so they were powerless to stop him. According to one Marine survivor, the driver was smiling as he sped past him.

The suicide bomber detonated his explosives, which were equivalent to 12,000 pounds (about 5,400kg) of TNT. The force of the explosion collapsed the four-story cinder-block building into rubble, crushing many inside.

About 20 seconds later, an identical attack occurred against the barracks of the French Third Company of the Sixth French Parachute Infantry Regiment. Another suicide bomber drove his truck down a ramp into the building's underground parking garage and detonated his bomb, leveling the headquarters.
