View Full Version : Sodium Nitrate: Cancer in the refrigerator

Another cancer causing food chemical exposed.

SODIUM NITRATE.

What is Sodium Nitrate? It is a meat persevative. It gives meat the red color when in fact the meat is more than likely a putrid grey color.

If you look on the back of Sausage, hotdogs, ham, bacon and processed lunch meat labels you will see this carcinogenic chemical listed.

When ingested it forms nitrosamines. Its main carcinogenic effect is on the colon and pancreas.

There were many studies on this harmful chemical.

One study revealed a 700% increase in leukimia, Quadrupling of brain tumors and a 6700% increase in pancreatic cancer following the diets of 2000 people.

How harmful is Sodium Nitrate?

This is the substance scientists use to inject labs rats to induce cancer for experiments.

In the 1970s the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture attempted to ban this chemical but were overpowered by the powerful meat industry lobbyists. Therefore despite how dangerous it is, it is still 100% legal for the meat industry to use.

Unfortunately my friends, this is how things work here in the States.
Money and intimidation overpowers all entities designed for the protection of your health.

We will add this to our list to date of carcinogenic or very harmful substances in our food supply including to date from past threads:

rBGH

(recombinant bovine growth hormone) Known by responsible Physicians to dramatically increase IGF-1 levels in the body and is strongly linked to breast, colon and prostate cancer. Found in NON-ORGANIC milk, cheese, butter.

LS-50

The most potent, restricted, illegal for certain use agricultural antibiotic. The residues of which are COMMONLY found in NON-ORGANIC meat, dairy and dairy derrivatives. Many of these residues accumulate in the human body and are passed along with some of the most mutated bacteria known. 51 other antibiotic residues are also found in NON-ORGANIC meat and dairy. These stay locked in fat cells of the human body and wont process out unless there is proper amino acids and vitamins in place for the liver to convert these from fat soluble molecules to water soluble molecules. Same applys to meat and dairy hormones used in the livestock industry.
I can give you 10 more health reasons to avoid milk in its entirety regardless of whether it is organic.

Benzene in soda.

Two chemicals, (Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Benzoate).
These two chemicals when combined with ascobic acid revert back to benzene. A six-pack of soda containing these ingredients in a hot car will drive the levels of benzene yet higher. You can find these ingredients in most citus-type sodas, orange or grape sodas. Check labels.
Benzene is a well known carcinogen and petro chemical.
(Tell your kids to avoid these chemicals)
The FDA has known about this for 16 years now and has did nothing about it.
If I were in charge of the FDA the products would be off the self immediatly, but as it stands, millions of kids are consuming this and have been for the last 16 years.

White bread.

In the processing of white bread chemicals such as:
Benzoyl peroxide, chlorine and alloxin. (2 known carcinogens and one chemical that destroys pancreatic cells and leads to type 2 diabetes).

Unfortunately we seem to be a country whos largest gross domestic product is the creation of disease and the treatment of disease.

Remove this system of disease creation and treatment of disease and our economy would collapse overnight.

A look at the marketing plan of any Walgreens or CVS pharmacy is a good example. Junk food in the front of the store and a pharmacy in the back of the store. Ironic isnt it?

At one end is an out of control food industry poisoning our bodies and at the other end is a Pharmacuetical company that attempts to fix these problems,
more often making it worse by the creation of invented diseases caused by, in reality, by our standard american diet.

A corporate CEO has an obligation to protect the interests of the shareholder, not your health. In fact if a CEO were to do otherwise he would be breaking the law.
There is a distinct name for this law.

There is another food chemical I will tell you about, with more lies and half-truths in marketing it into products. It causes many forms of dengenerative disease and is perfectly legal in the States yet banned by the World trade Organization.

Have a good one.

yes, they are in most hotdogs, i find it very sickening that people try to hide poor quality meat by using chemicals

Hey, Ganja,
I believe you're actually referring to sodium nitrite rather than nitrate. People frequently confuse the chemical names since there's only one vowel's difference. Sodium nitrate is saltpeter, an ingredient in explosives.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_nitrate

Sodium nitrite is the meat preservative that's been closely linked with cancer, particularly pancreatic cancer. That study done by the University of Hawaii was actually an examination of 20,000 people rather than 2,000, and the finding was a 67% increase in pancreatic cancer risk rather than 6,700%. Here's a good piece about it: http://www.newstarget.com/007133.html

I don't know about anyone else, but when I first read this news when the study results were published in spring 2005, it put me off processed meats for good. You have a good one, too!

Hey bird,

Thanks for the reply.

Double checked newstarget as that is where I pulled the article.

6700% still stands.

I guess mathematically 67% would refer to 2000 people and 6700% would refer to 20,000 people? same right? But your are right 6700% of 2000 is not right as I missed a (1) zero. Good thing Im not a banker.

Nitrite not nitrate is correct. (1) vowel off.

Me too, I dont eat any type of processed meat, thats the way I was raised.

Hey, hon!
Good thing I'm not a banker, either. If I had a mind for numbers I'd have been able to adjust the percentages myself! Jeez, I already know math's going to be the biggest challenge I face in med school. And I'm already starting to feel anxious about it.

You're lucky you weren't raised on processed meat. That'll be a great benefit to you. We ate it all the time when I was growing up, and that has concerned me ever since I first read that study last year.

Here's to your health, my friend! Talk to you soon.

correct me if im doing the math wrong but 67/2000= .0335 where as 6700/20000=.335

670/20000=.0335

so shouldnt the % be 670% and not 6700%?

The survey results were 67% increased risk in a study of 20,000 people.

So reduce that to 2,000 and the corresponding risk percentage would be 6.7%, right?

yup thats rite

but wheres this 6700 comming from?

birdgirl73

Well, in Ganj's original post that started this thread, he cited the percentage as a 6,700% increased risk in a survey of 2,000 people.

ya then he said it still stood..... so im a bit confused now :p

tho he could ahve missed a 0 again

I think he just had his zeros off. Or he could have been referring to a different survey than the one I was with the 67%/20,000.

By any measure, the important news here is that that sodium nitrite stuff will dramatically increase people's risk of pancreatic cancer. So say sayonara to sausages!

Thats ridiculous, why would they feed us that knowing it's dangers? I just don't understand.

That is a bit of a mystery, isn't it? But that's the way of the food industry, like many others (such as the drug industry). Profit is the highest motivation, not the health of humanity.

Although that study establishing the link to pancreatic cancer came out in 2005, experts have known that nitrites are unhealthy for decades, easily since the 1960s. The food industry, and, in America, the FDA, sees more benefit in preserving meats and giving them an attractive red color than in protecting people.

ehh....least this way people won't turn grey and funky looking when they die.

They'll maintain a nice pinkish hue to their dead flesh.

This sort of story was rcently in the news...major grocery chains were found to have the crap in their meats.

Its a stupid thing anyway...soon as oxygen is gone...meat begins to turn. And as soon as its chewed and swallowed...its rotting in your gut while its digested.

ffs....nothing is safe to eat anymore...not even bearded clams!!!
