Im fairly positive they outlawed tourists smoking there. Im sure it there, and Im sure you could smoke wherever, but they might not sell it to you at the shop. I cant be held to that, but I swear I read it somewhere recently.

i'm pretty sure you can purchase and smoke
in coffee shops...you should avoid smoking
on the streets and in other public places all together.
be careful in the hotel room too.

i'm almost positive that they didn't change the legality of cannabis there. why would they? then rich american stoners wouldn't go there anymore.

My advice would be to turn off your caps lock.

Don't worry about not being able to smoke weed in Amsterdam. They were talking about banning it, but they haven't actually done anything like that. And even if they did, I'm sure you'd be able to find a café that wouldn't demand proof of Dutch citizenship for all customers. Besides, how hard would it be for a tourist to just pay a Dutch guy to buy him weed?

I was starting to think I dreamed that shit. I guess I really did read it somewhere. That would be impossible anyway cuz you cant tell whos dutch and whos not. That would be fucked up if you were standing by a dutch guy and both of you were smoking and the police snatched you up and put you in jail. I heard you can purchase vagina over there too.:eek:

Yeah, but you can purchase vagina in nevada too. Although I'd much rather have amsterdam vagina than nevada vagina.

Yeah, prostitution is legal in the Netherlands too. And gay marriage. They're decades ahead of us.

Me: No, the usual age is 18. They might be cool if you're under 18, but if you look borderline Tween then they're gonna ask for ID.

Gues it is 18. What about cigarettes then, eh?

And that was my post, not UberDoobie's. If you're gonna make fun of someone's insidiously stupid post, which contains nothing more than high ramblings, make sure you get the idiot right.

Ouch... I made myself feel bad...

Gosh, I should have seen this thread before....

You need to be 18 to enter a coffeeshop. Buying in small quantities is tolerated - it is not actually legal. The law is extremely messed up, growing is for example just as illegal as it is anywhere else, and they do bust growers.

When you go there, try to avoid the tourist traps. And do not go around smoking up on the streets, only low-lives and tourists do that. Smoke up in the shop itself or at a friends place, or in a park - and no, not in your hotel.

What are some of amsterdams "tourist traps"???:confused: and why not smoke in the hoteL?

pinkchick

Because it is not 100% legal, it is only tolerated. This does not apply to public places though - people will look at you strangely if you walk around town with a spiff, for example. A hotel will not tolerate weed on their premises, and the police will probably approach you if you smoke in public places. There are exceptions, but generally, smoking is only tolerated at festivals, in the coffeeshop itself, in a quiet part of the park or in your own home.

1 piece of advice would be to treat the place with a little respect and don't give them more reason to say "look at the stupid tourists who can't handle their drugs and booze".

use google earth man. find amsterdam and it gives you the option of looking up resterants and coffee shops all that, plus when it shows establishments, it gives you reviews of that establishment. (houses, neighborhoods, shops, theme parks etc. most of them have ratings) if you dont have it download it here. http://earth.google.com/

Yes. They sell all kinds in most of the head shops. I didn't notice them in coffee shops or have heard of it but amsterdam is so relaxed anything is possible.

Yep. Mushrooms is legal - which I personally think is crazy. We had a wee girl selling shrooms to us once, telling us it was no big deal, bladiebladie... Honestly, even kiddies could get it. And sorry, but I think it is a deal - it was way too intense for my liking, and I am used to hard stuff.

As for coffeeshops, just surf the net - there are plenty of sites rating the local coffeeshops. One definite tourist trap is the Bulldog, no local would go there. Some helpful links:

http://www.boomchicago.nl/Section/Real-Amsterdam/NaughtyAmsterdamDrugs
http://www.flyingpig.nl/multimedia/newspaper4.14.shtml

I also found some pretty good description/ information:

Coffeeshops
A 'coffeeshop' can best be described as a café which does not sell alcoholic beverages and in which, under certain circumstances, soft drugs may be sold. Although the sale of soft drugs is an offense, low priority is given to the prosecution of coffee shop owners, provided they meet the following conditions:
- no more than five grams per person may be sold in any one transaction;
- no hard drugs may be sold;
- drugs may not be advertised;
- the coffee shop must not cause any nuisance;
- no drugs may be sold to persons under the age of 18,
nor may minors be admitted on the premises.

Policy On Drugs
For the record, trafficking in (importing or exporting), selling, producing and processing either hard or soft drugs are offenses in Holland. As you will probably be aware though, the Netherlands and especially the Amsterdam authorities carry a liberal policy on 'soft' drugs (marihuana and hashish). This means that although legally the selling and buying of soft drugs is forbidden, certain 'coffeeshops' are allowed to sell small quantities and you're allowed to smoke your purchase inside. The current rates lie between â?¬5-â?¬10 per gram. Be careful though, while smoking can be allowed in certain youth hostels, music venues and bars, it is not considered acceptable behavior everywhere. As a general rule, if you see other people smoking it should be no problem.

By the way, don't fall for any of the herbal ecstacy shit etc that the headshop also sells - it will only give you some tinkling etc.

If you want to use E, you will probably find some stuff in any of the clubs - 80% of worldwide E is manufactured in the Netherlands. Just do not run around the club and ask everyone - that stuff is mostly tolerated as long as security do not see it. Most bouncers are actually paid to let in one or two house dealers, which gives them additional incentive to really search for drugs when you enter the club. Hide it in your underpants and you'll be fine. If you buy in the club, watch the people - someone who is obviously tripping will probably be happy to sell you a pill for 5 â?¬ or point you towards someone who does sell.

Be aware that what they sell in NL is generally a lot stronger than what is sold outside of the country, so go easy and start with 1/4 of a pill, then another quarter after 30-60 minutes.
