View Full Version : Karma System Suggestion...

Ok, well I dont know if this option is avaliable for vBulletin but I think that there should be a karma system. Basically it's a plug-in or a "mod" you can add to the forum (for free) that only takes a little alteration of the forum code (or possibly just the click of a button) if this forum is like phpBB. Basically when ever some body posts or does something good that is very likeable they can be granted a +1 karma point. If they do something thats very hateful or something that some one doesnt like they will get a -1 karma point. It'll be helpful for people on the boards to know who to trust if they give a link to something. I dunno, it just seems like a helpful modification that can be added because there is some threads that are posted that I wanna give some one a +1 karma point for but the mod isnt here. Some one please suggest it and please dont delete this thread like all of my other threads posted in this section lol.

That would be getting back to running a popularity contest....more less. We are all equal in here...lets try to keep it that way.
Have a good one!

I dunno, I kind of like the idea. It's only a popularity system in the way that the karma points are kept, but honestly, if the system is something like "who can be the nicest and most helpful?", I don't think it would hurt to at least try it out? Just a thought.

I wasnt thinking about any popularity thing. I just thought it'd be a good idea to see who is the most helpful. Because if you were helpful of course you would have alot of + karma points and if you were just a trouble maker you had a bunch of - points. Would sorta help to decide if you wanna get to know a person from here or not (in a way). Like if they tried to contact you via MSN or something...

'karma system' idea is a waste of time, and more work for mods, etc ... if somebody's a jerk, just IGNORE them, or suggest they be banned ... too many people in here expect too fucking much for FREE ... I don't work for free, and I don't expect anybody else to ... :smokin:

Billionfold hes just giving his opinion
People are allowed to do that weather they are a paying member or not
Why do you always say that to people 'You are not a paying member'...
Neither are you

So wait, does this karma system require anymore work from the mods? I don't think it does, and it's just an option the members can use, but maybe I read wrong. No need for the hostility, reeper...

That sounds hypocritical since you're not a paying member.
LOL and I've never used vBulletin before so I dont know if the mods will have to alter code or not but if vBulletin is anything like the SMFBoards all they have to do is get a karma package and upload the .zip to the ftp or w/e.

I know I'm not, but I also don't bitch half as much as some of the people here, who do not pay. Unless you consider bitching at them bitching.
you are correct, I am not a dues-paying member, ... and, I am tired of all the bitchers and moaners that do nothing but complain about something that is free, and owes them nothing ... while you may not agree with me, it hardly qualifies me as a 'hypocrite' ... a hypocrite says one thing, and does another ... I stand by every word I say ... (I don't harbor grudges against anyone that disagrees with me, either, I just assume they are wrong :D ) ... :smokin:

True.

Exactly.
I am just defending Orangeman's suggestion. It couldn't hurt to try it, could it? If it becomes a pay only feature, then so be it.
If I could pay for Cafe membership once and not monthly I'd probably pay cuz I can afford it, but I cant afford it every month :p. But why would karma granting be for Cafe members only?

Ok guys...I'm putting my Mod badge down for a moment.
member latewood:
billionfold and image reaper...you guys are 2 of what I could best describe as "sensible"; As a member I feel you all have made contribution's to the community here. So, Quit Bitchin' at each other. I am Happy there is "No" Karma ratings here personally.
Badge On:
1st: It doesn't matter: Cafe member or not...your opinion carries just as much weight as the next guys. Period!
2nd: When Ron owned the site...there was a definite moratorium on the whole karma/popularity contest system's thing...It has been discussed periodically over time and found wanting. With that said, I still believe the Old guard still feels the same...No Karma system. we never have had it. We don't need it. You earn respect by word of mouth, so to speak...and that's that.
everyone is entitled to "Respect" and their "Opinion". I will never Ban anyone for that; I will argue, but I am also a member and entitled to "My" "Opinion" too!I
t's just that sometimes after stating an opinion...A disagreement ensues, and someone pulls the "Asshole" lever...Stumble bumble Bam! Banned...
Now that doesn't even apply to this thread, but you know what I mean. The participants of this thread, in fact, for the most part could be Mods themselves, but there are only so many seats in the "Henhouse". As the old saying goes, "all good things come to those who wait".
With that put forth, I would like to close in saying. "I rate each member by the way said member relates to the community as a whole, including, but not limited to, staying within the parameters of what the site was built for and use to it's full potential what has been given them...
So, I give the most respect to the guys/gals who put forth an effort to respect there fellow members and their opinion's regardless. If you are in a community, then you must respect each other 1st. If called...let's say hypocrite, you could choose to disregard the insult and be a better person by allowing your peer his opinion. After all are you a hypocrite? Just rattling everybodies chain...peace

Its annually (once a year).
I agree with Orangeman about being able to trust people easier, but i also agree that sadly it would turn into a populairty contest... and then it'll end up with flame wars. Probably started by me lol... I can see it now.

Lol, nvm then. I didnt think of it like this. I just wanted a simple karma system, people on this other forum had it (and even I had it on my old forum). Never turned into anything. If anything it just had more people devoted into giving useful info for karma points :p.

Is there anything less productive in the world than a bunch of stoners discussing the possibility of virtual karma? I don't mean that disrespectfully; I think it's funny! :-)
