No, not a hippie here, although I know a few. I don't fit into any 'stoner' categories. If you were to see me, you'd think I was just another corporate yuppie who only cares about themselves.

On the outside I look like a suburban wife/mother and yuppie. But on the inside, I've got a strong hippie streak. I don't plan to start wearing tie-dyed clothing or getting all wooly and hairy, but I definitely have hippie sensibilities like live-and-let-live, make-love-not-war, get-hip-and-get-high, and others.

Thats me besides the truck, Pink Floyd stuff, and tie-dye shirts; I wear polo and lacoste, which throws things off a bit.
And WTF the deal with white people having dreads, if you call yourself a hippie at least look like one, Rasta is not Hippie. Its Hare Krishna all over again.

altho i do have very liberal beliefes... but im not like the comun (sp) kinda thing with the flowers and that kind of thing... i wouldnt call myself a hippie
it's not about how one looks or smells but is all about politics and economics. capitalism and conservative politics are the anti-hippy while a self-sustaining barter system is more acceptible with a 'rule by consensus' form of political organization to form the community. generally, you will not see them in public as most live off of the grid and have little use for our values and economic system. those that are found living on the fringes of babylon are nothing more than the hobo's of old and contribute nothing to either system...hence the name, drainbow's.

Yes, Im a hippie. One day, Im going to have my own little (hand-built) shack near a river somewhere, maybe a few palm trees out front. And out back, Ill have my own chickens (used for eggs and meat), fruits and vegetables, and each harvest Ill keep what I need for myself and hand the rest out for free. Oh and of couse Ill have my own little cannabis plantation, where Ill just grow and grow, again using just what I need and handing out the rest for free. No computers, no cars, no TV, no radio... just me and nature :)

My hippie-heart has now errupted with love and now my body is feeling the embrace.
I haven't cut my hair in God knows how long, and the last time I wore shoes was ages ago. "Where are my sandals?!?"
I attended a lot of shows over the summer amongst a very broad, very pungent hippie crowd, and for the most part, fell in love with them and their lifestyle.
Most of the people we met we still full-on heads, but only during the summer did they "come out", and go festival to festival, most of the time without showers or a night's rest on a mattress. The music and the weed and the psychedelics keep them alive and going. It was amazing to be a part of it, to live like they did for even 4-5 days.
The day was so hot that people just traveled tent to tent, tarp to tarp, to find some shade and maybe meet a new friend. I only met a few rotten apples out of a shitload of people that weekend, and it just made me think realize how good-hearted and good-natured the heads really are.
I'll forever "be" a hippie or head, internally, but I'm sure my appearance will alter as the years wear on.

Ok. I may be wrong in doing so, but I use labels as a way of communicating. Most of us know that everyone is unique, everyones lived a different life with different memories and a different personality.
But most of us also know and understand the concept behind the word "Hippy" or "Hippie".
hippie:
Noun
Inflected forms: pl.hip·pies A person who opposes and rejects many of the conventional standards and customs of society, especially one who advocates extreme liberalism in sociopolitical attitudes and lifestyles.
So, in order to make yabatab feel better, who here follows the generality of this definition, in your beleif system or way of life?

Did I miss something, or was "hippy" not a name given to that culture
by popular media? Much like all the other groups of people that have
their own ideas on music and ways off life. So I try not label myself

Noun
Inflected forms: pl.hip·pies A person who opposes and rejects many of the conventional standards and customs of society, especially one who advocates extreme liberalism in sociopolitical attitudes and lifestyles.
Under that definition, I think I only qualify for the first part. "Extremely liberal" would be a stretch for me, for although that would appear to be my position at first glance, I don't really believe it can be made into a social "position." Real peace occurs only within the individual--social harmony should be striven for, but human unity is an individual experience that has to be discovered by each person on his or her own. If change is going to happen, it has to be on a more fundamental level of human consciousness, wherein we each realize that all of us are, and always have been, one.
Therefore, I reject the form of liberalism most visibly espoused by "hippies," since I think there has got to be a better way of going about it than the way practiced within the political activism counterculture. However, "counterculture" is still a useful label, and I certainly identify myself with it in other ways:D

you might want to check your date of birth, if you wasn't alive in

forgotten dream.

Go to a festival and then tell me the American Dream is dead.
Lol, pshh, it's not dead or even gone, it has just been sized down into 3-4 day-long festivals each weekend. That's the time when it's more than a dream. It's reality. That's why festy's ROCK.

I didn't say it Hunter S Thompson did.....LOL
But I believe it is, it dies a little more every
day. Look at the current situation in america
and tell me that its not true. Are rights are
slowly being taken away from us. A dictating

will effect this country negatively for many

Well I must say that it's never Dubbya himself that should get the blame. A lot of the time, he's the government's "poster-boy" for any and all ridicule and criticism from the rest of the world. He's one man in front of many that run this country, so getting mad at only Bush is a little unfair, as much as he looks like an elderly chimpanzee... I hate most of the elected officials in America. Lol, there.
But that's also what I was kind of getting at by mentioning the festivals, because when you're at one, any thought or resemblence of any government is gone. You left that at the front gate. : )
Festivals are just simple, pure. You go for the music, to be thrown into the lifestyle so you almost drown in the notes as they float by yours ears. It's the music and the people, that's it.
Lol, then, sadly, you have to eventually pack up and head home, tails between the legs. They are a great escape from the exact type of shit that's happening now, all over the world.

I agree with you Plant on both issues. Bush is a crazed puppet,
I know that man does not have the intellect to make political
decisions. He is ......well a moron, he was put into office for the
fact that he is a drooling idiot. I believe he just agrees with what
is put before him. So me calling him a dictator and focusing the
blame all on him was just a statement directing hate for this office
of president.
And music festivals yes they are a grate escape and the feeling
you get from being with people that are on the same wave as you
are is good feeling. I really don't mean to offend people with such
brash statements as I have made I am only posting what I think.
Mass media has a lot to do with labeling groups, so if you never herd
the term "hippy" and met up with people that shared similar beliefs
you wouldn't think of that group as a stigma label but merely others
that you have things in common with.

Hey kids! you too can be a hippy!!! if you fit into the following catogories:
1) do not bathe,
2) have long hair
3) take lots of drugs and
4) read tim leary and hunter s. thompson, and proclaim them as the true gospels of your life. Lo! they are bringers of the GOOD NEWS!!
5) john lennon is now your modern day saint. accept it.
6) take up a heroin habit to be like janis joplin. quit it cold turkey to walk in the foot steps of john lennon. become like the master.
7) graduate from a university to study organic chemistry, just so you can synthesize quaaludes and LSD in your clandestine kitchen laboratory:-)
8) believe in free, careless sex without condoms with any willing partner.
9) smoke at least 3 joints for breakfast.
10) love eachother-- your anthem is now some hippy dippy song about loving eachother.
11) if you beg for change to buy marijuana at the mcdonalds on haight street--and openly state that you will buy drugs with the money.
the american dream isn't dead, it's just changed. where people before wanted happyness, people now days want a fat pay check and an SUV. quite disappointing, if you ask me.
PS-the idea of hippy has been marketed and capitalized upon so long, that the term "hippy" is just a bastardization. original hippies came out of the Beat generation. But alas, these are the days when the beatle classic "all you need is love" is on a chase credit card commerical. what a wonderful world.

So many of you are hypocritical. If they are "simply them, with no pre-conception" then the statement that they wouldn't call themselves "hippy" or "hippie" (OmG ronjohn I spelled it correctly suddenly I'm worthy of the title?)
is crap. If they're so unique and individual then any one of them could label or think of themselves with that title, becuase theres no preconceptions is there?

Embrace it.
Try to learn a little about it.

I'm not a hippy, I don't look like what people call a hippy, or dress like one, and I wouldn't ever say I was one.. But my friends all call me one, and they say things like "woah you're way too Peace & Love". That's usually after they talk about or watch boxing or some other violent sport and I go do something else....

I dunno
I don't see myself as a hippie, quite the opposite actually
I'm too demented
The world is a very ugly place, and I accept that
I embrace it with open arms

People call me a hippy out of stereotype:
I wear Teva sandels (same ones for the past four years) and I have a hemp necklace. On occasion I will earnestly ask someone "why do you think we are here, are we here?" And so I am a hippy.
Yet what is overlooked is that I have short corporate hair cut, I dont reek of patuchli (sometimes tho, 'Rasta' is a good scent) and I dont wear remake T-Shirts bought at JC Penny that say "Led Zeppelin" "Grateful Dead"
And my feet are tanned from the sun but not dirty, I do take showers.
- which pisses me off. I hate seeing these remake shirts of Pink Floyd and stuff, I dunno why it bothers me but it does..
But I suppose I dont mind the stereotype. I'd rather be this than some white kid wearing size XXL baby blue sweat pants thinking Im tough and out of the ghetto (like most of my friends) when they lead perfectly good lives
Im 6'2 and weigh like 125-130 pounds. I have a friend who is identical in size and weight and wears the biggest pair of Lugz you'd ever see in your life, the biggest fluffiest baby blue bad boy sweat pants and the biggest 2pac t-shirt they make.
Thats off topic who the fuck cares.
If someone takes offense to that to bad, scorn me ban me etc, this is just a forum. And if you take offense to that then you probably are a white kid wearing clothes clearly depicting black culture. Nothing wrong with that though, preferences are good
Im an asshole I know.

6'2 130???
I'm 6'1 170, and I'm thin like a twig. That's insanely underweight, perhaps unhealthy.
The only hippy thing about me is my mindset, and my tattoo, which decipts peace.

So many of you are hypocritical. If they are "simply them, with no pre-conception" then the statement that they wouldn't call themselves "hippy" or "hippie" (OmG ronjohn I spelled it correctly suddenly I'm worthy of the title?)
is crap. If they're so unique and individual then any one of them could label or think of themselves with that title, becuase theres no preconceptions is there?
read your effing post before you put it up here..
and for my final commercialized conformist comment...
"Peace".
 thanks for noticing me:dance:
and it is true, hippies were tryin to be themselves, an INDIVIDUAL . If we all put ourself in this pot of "hippies" then we have defeated the purpose of even being one......
NOW ITS JUST BEING COOL
