I'm really new to growing - does this look any good and is it to early to tell if it's male or female?

bobbydabud

Well Sdhall36,

Yes, you can relax cause it looks fine. Remember you can never have too much light or fresh air. You want big buds you need a big root ball which means big pots.

Looks good but if that is tin foil id think about an alternative
reflective material Mylar or flat white, if it is Mylar, my bad.

Hey Hall,

Is that a bag seed?

The genetics look very week.. Maybe it is just the light you are using.. The good news is, the plant is healthy.. but... it is weak and spindly looking.. the top leaves should be bigger...

make sure you don't over water.. the roots need air!

thank you for all you kind help and comments, here is a latest pic - I am using 4x150 watt compact flourecents and 4x60 watt of those horrible daylight bulbs.
Yes it is tin foil, prolly bad.
Is it natural for the bottom leaves to die off like that?

When u say daylight bulbs you mean flourscent right? because noraml incandesant lights (the regualr bulbs) are terrible for growing.

sdhall36
08-01-2006, 03:43 PM
yeah those are the ones plus 4x inneficient 60 watt daylight ones also, (got those before I could get the cfls. (150 watt pure daylight CFLs)
The seed is supposed to be skunk #1 from holland - maybe I worry too much it's just the bottom leaves are dying a little.
I'm giving them 24hours of light and have a mild breeze cooling the lights and plants.

It's normal for bottom leaves to die off as a response to not enough light. So get better light and the bottom leaves will live longer. Eventually they do die off, but it shouldn't be so early.

08-01-2006, 03:52 PM
hmmm, first off, i have 2 CFL on my plants and there growing nicely and very compact. The reason being is that the lamps are 1-2 inchs from the surface of the leafs....It seems that your plants light source is too far away since the internode lengths are long. Put the lamps much closer and you will see a great difference in growth. Get a desktiop lamp ($10), there great and very adjustable.

sdhall36

I've lowered the lights now and it's taking off - getting a thicker stem too, I've got them on 24hrs - should I reduce?
And is it still too early to sex?

Garden Knowm

I would wait a bit longer..

Racerx
08-07-2006, 07:21 AM
i would wait a bit longer too...but for information purpose, that is about the size that I just flowered mine at. 6-7 nodes. Took about 2 weeks of 12/12 for everything to show sex. Theyve grown considerably since then. So if your trying to keep them very small, you might want to go to 12/12 soon.

sdhall36
08-07-2006, 11:45 PM
I won't try to flower just now, will keep on with the light as some of the younger plants haven't caught up - this is the best plant I am monitoring (just my luck it's a male) anyway, Im gonna give a weeks more 24/24.

I have the space so I don't mind if they get tall - it's the sexing that will kill me, no idea - I have six plants and one is gonna die I'm sure.

Anyway say hi to Sheila for me, (she/he says hi) she/he says hi to you all - they love you and I do too or I would have never haven gotten so far!

Ya I'm fucked - latest pic anyway...

cheers Knowm, but it/they aren't dying are they? - it's just (the plant in the pic) a bit spindley because I had the lights too high at first, all are starting to bush out serious now. :) thanks to all your kind help on here.

Okay here it is - think it's a female? Still too early to sex?

It's the best plant of prolly a bad bunch - but some are catching up, damn I had the lights too high!!!

Could I go to 12/12 now for a small yeild... sould I? Or wait more? Does sex only appear when near flower?

Hi Knowm - here are some more pics as you requested (lights etc) they are a bit crappy cos I took them from above so you can get some idea, there are two more plants missed off the pic.

To the far left of the shot, two more plants, one doing great the other grows leaves then the others die (not good).

So I have five plants (six if you include the dying one) - now are you sure that main one (others catching up rapidly) - is a male :(

My mate says that it's too early to tell still - grrrrrrrr

Fantastic..
Those are CFL's correct ?

Get THE CFL's less than 1 inch from your plants.. You will need to adjust the lights nearly every day because the plants will grow......

Lower some lights inbewteen the plants ....

and add 1-5 more lights..

Flower them tomorrow!!!!

yes tomorrow

Are you using COMPACT HPS bulbs?

: )

sdhall36
08-18-2006, 12:03 PM
no they are just Low enegry normal bulbs (household) 4 x 100 watt (bad?) - and the other four are "pro-lite Daylite Helix Compact Florescent" Model 6400K Helix 220-240V / 50Hz (even distribution of 6400k light 360º).

2nd day of 12/12 now - they be growing tall man!!!

Also the one that was dying is perking up a little now, given 5-5-5 pnk general purpose fertilizer.

How long do you think it will take to flower/show sex for them? Will prolly have to kill some males - waaaa, I love them all!

love and light Knowm (thanks for taking me under your wing) x

Replace the four 100-watt incandescents with some cool CFLs and your plants will do even better, AND it will cost less on your electric bill. Incandescent lights don't help plants much; they're 'tuned' for the human visual spectrum. They generate more heat than they do light that plants use.

sdhall36
08-18-2006, 02:42 PM
okay - a pic, I'm flowering now (well just started to do so) - they are loving it, not dying at all now, harsh growth everywhere.

This is exciting isn't it?

Where are you... help me we need to sex soon!!!!!

arrrg! 5-5-5 NPK

The lights are okay so far, lack of phosphorus causes blue leaves, lack of nitrogen makes leaves die, and lack of potassium makes the plant slow down... is this right?

anyway they are good to press - now how long? to flower? (the pH is 6.6 using pH papers) - will be good after next flush.

First gro and... fuck I'm doing okay - sativa/indica seeds from Holland 50/50 KC Brains seed bank.

Any input?

sdhall36
08-19-2006, 07:34 PM
No Jamstigator - they are energy saving ones and I heard that plants need "warm" light (sodium) for the flowering time + with the CFL's so near now they will bloom - no good?
I'll take a pic tomorrow (day four into flowering) - we might see some sex then perhaps, I think I see a white hair from the top plant, looks exciting!

sdhall36
08-21-2006, 09:05 PM

Envirolites are available in 2 models: Red 2700k (kelvin) and White 6400k (kelvin)

Red 2700k lamps are used mostly for flowering.
White / blue 6100k 125w lamps can be used for propagation and vegetative growth.

Thanks for the light info will get some of the 2700k ones, didn't know you could get those.

Anyway here's a pic of the one we thought was gonna be a male - see the white hairs?
I have another pretty big female now as well (she has shown herself!)

Had to take a male out this morning though :(

so that leaves three plants left, one is dying for sure - out of the other two one is very sativa looking and the other looks more indica, no signs of sex yet on those though.
They are skunk #1 seeds 75/25 Indica/Sativa from KC Brains seedbank.

How much yeild do you think I'll get - the plants are about 14-15 inches tall right now.
12/12 Light cycle - just showing sex - any ideas?

Hope for 0.5 grams per watt of light. That's real watts, not 'equivalent watts', read the fine print on your CFLs, somewhere it will show what real wattage they are. Be very happy if you exceed 0.5 grams/watt, and don't be disappointed if you don't yield that much. The 'holy grail' is 1 gram/watt, but that's if everything goes perfectly, and I doubt many achieve that. It's better to be a pessimist and happily surprised than an optimist and totally disappointed. I have never reached 1 gram/watt, personally, although I am edging closer. I'm always happy to reach half that, and consider anything beyond that as a bonus for doing a good job. ;)

Okay today it was all become clear, I took a male out the other day and now the dying one was a male two so now I have 4 females into week two of flowering!
I have 1000 "real" watts on the plants so hoping for maybe 1oz from all four, what do you think?
I'll definately have enough to try a joint won't I?

I'll post more pics in a week from now, or as developments occur, anyway here are pics of my four girls, Sheila (who we though was a guy), Janet (the little one), Helen (the tall sativa looking one) and Jenny (all alone in one corner of the grow bag).

I'm plannin' on starting my first one soon and reading through your grow log, as well as many others, has taught me alot. The pic shows it.
1) Small THC crystals forming on the top leaves now.
2) Main cola grown an inch.
3) Top leaves pointing upwards - now Zandor says (I read somewhere) "that this means they are getting all the nutes and all is well"

I (however) have noticed that they only do this just before I say good night to them though, call me crazy it's like they know it's bed time and they are trying to get the last bit of light (even though the lights are only 2-3" away!)

IT is very very easy to over water an MJ plant.. I would say most if not all first time growers kill a plant due to over watering.. you should not be watering more than once every 3-10 days.. depending on plant size, temperature, grow medium, pot size.. etc

I love you..

Get BIGGER CFLs.. like 42 watt cfls

YOU should start your own thread..

Too much to say, very awesome place - incredible people.

I forgot the camera more times than I took it out anywhere, here are some pics though.
1) Hotel window view (two great bars - like long corridors) you could smoke in the "Flying Dutchman" (well we did anyway).
2) Amsterdam is historical and littered with museums. I mean look at this one... we can't possibly go in can we? Can we??? - We can, and we will!!!! (very trippy)
3) One of the many bars
4) Some things bought from coffee bars - left is "Purple Haze" right is "White Haze" (smoked a lot of that, it was nice). And some space cakes.

5) The plants are okay - took a quick snap of Sheila again - more brown hairs on her buds/etc. I checked the trichromes and they are half milky half clear right now so I am still waiting.

Hey Hall,
What strain is that you are growing? It loks very similar to one I am growing...Just curious. If you have already stated in this thread, my apologies in advance! Glad you like Dam... I loved it there... I hadn't smoked in years before I went there the first time long ago.... Long story short, I was to get ill from the white widow, and not until after being ill did i realize I was in the wrong restroom. Guess I couldn't read the signs too well.
Anyway I loved it. Went to a lot of places, and trust me, my brother and I have galore stories about our trip there!!!!
Glad you had a good time...

Hey knowm! Ty - yeah we had a great time, already planning another trip. Perhaps for Feb next year:)

elway07 - yeah I did mention it in this thread (shit it's long now) - it's skunk #1. I read that it was quite good for a first time grow, and it is! I've learned a lot now though.

iarbaman - I'm into my eighth week of flowering (just) now, and it was at least 5-6 weeks before I saw nice sugary trichromes and the buds started getting noticably bigger every 2-3 days. Sayonara!

Janet looks almost ready, nearly all her trics are cloudy and a few are amber, will prolly harvest at the weekend all being well.
I've sneaked a few buds during the grow (who hasn't?) and it's pretty good, so it should be amazing after drying and curing properly - all being well!

Love Hall x

Okay it's over - I'm gonna harvest today (the trics are all milky and some are amber), then a week or so hanging then more time curing.

I've been drying a few tiny "test" buds for a few days, pic included (3.5g) - it's very potent stuff as good if not better than some of the stuff I had in Dam.
I'm sure it will be much better after drying and curing properly too!

Again - thanks fo all your help on here, I did it yay!

Peace out - Hall x
