View Full Version : What happens when you cut a leaf?

I've seen a lot of this, even when I got my clones some of the leaves were cut, not completely, just at midpoint or so. My question is what is the purpose of this and what would it do to the plant?

Well Tekneeqs,
During the cloning process, the removal of that extra leaf surface means more energy focused toward the creation of roots.

On the other hand, less leaf surface means less energy the plant can absorb from light in order to form more roots. Heh.

yes but more surface area means the undeveloped roots struggle 2 feed the bigger leaves
I've tried it both ways and I really haven't seen any difference

Hmm.. An unsettled topic. I'll just stick on the safe side and don't touch the leaves =p

The primary reason leaves are cut is to reduce the surface area and minimize water loss through transpiration. The plant normally would lose lots of moisture this way, but it would be replaced by its healthy root system. A plant with no roots can't do this. Thus, removal of large leaves. Spraying with wilt-pruf has the same purpose.

I believe it's a kind of wax-like stuff ... keeps moisture in. Also good for shining apples.

No one has answered that half cutting or even pruning in general stresses the plant, thus causing the plant to divert energy to repair or heal itself, not growing. I'm not saying that you shouldn't (as pruning does have its advantages and necessities) but it is something to keep in mind.

If you cut a leaf the plant will stop using it's energy to grow and use most of it to replace that cut leaf or growth tip.

very true, unless you are cloning then it will focus all its energy on root growth
cheers all :)
