What does the referrals bit mean in peoples profiles

Where it says referrals in peoples profiles what does that mean?

If you were to let's say tell a mate about this site

and they decide to sign up. . . .

When there filling out their details,, it asks were you referred

by an existing member. . . .

And if they stick your user name in there,, it comes up in

your profile as a referral. . . . . ;)

i got a referral because i told my friend about the site, and when he joined it gave him an option to say who told him about the site.
