Some of my games got like that, but mainly it was all the ESPN titled games. I had two of those freeze up on me, and I think it has to do with a combination of scratches and also shotty programming. If the game cost like $20, what's to stop them from just slopping the game together? I was also pissed when that happened, but what can ya do?

yeah either cleaning or...
Some models of playstation get a "disk read error" after the disk has loaded for a while! (The earlier PS2s) Mine does that with some games..but I hoovered it and it seems to work ok at the moment.....just take a few mins to load up each game...
try hoovering the front and back vent.....it worked for me...for some games...
haha sorry I couldn't be more help!!

My brother has the older version of the PS2, the big one, and it freezes often.
I on the other hand, got the smaller one when it came out because it was so cheap. I use it often, for games and movies, and it has never once freezed up on me.
Maybe your machine is crapping out man...? A brand new game shouldn't do that.

just take care of the discs, keep em in their cases. I have a few PS1 games that lock up at certain points, but none of my PS2 games do, and i've had it for 5 years now

Here's a really good walkthrough for calibrating the laser.
http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars
One thing the PS2 is notorious for is DRE's and weak lasers. Follow the guide right and you should notice a big difference. I would advise cleaning the laser with a little alchohol while your in there. You can try cleaning the lens 1st and see if that helps (fixes a lot of issues expecially with CDs not reading). If not, it's time to calibrate.
**Note, doing this will forever void your warrenty with sony! Notice the nice little label on the back reveal the words VOID as soon as you pull it off. Be careful and follow the guide explicitly and you should be fine, but don't cry to me if you break something. I'm not responsible for being clumsy**
Good Luck

Then it's a good chance you need to clean it, really really well, and if it doesn't work still, it's probably toast.
Try and go sell it to a game shop while it still works. I brought in my old PS2 when it first came out, it hardley worked anymore. Luckily, it worked long enough for them to test it and I got $65 for a machine that worked maybe 15% of the time.
And I still feel good about it. :D
