Well I share with friends :)

Anyways who has ever been to Amsterdam and the Netherlands? And what was your favorite place or city? I myself live in Amsterdam but I am planning to move north where I was born. The country is much different there, much more relaxed. Anyone ever been to Leeuwarden? (the capitol of Fryslân, the viking province :D)

Hello Wotan, and welcome to the boards.

First, I honestly envy your stash of pot. Secondly, I have never been to Amsterdam but would love to visit one day--if I enjoy my visit enough, I might even move there eventually. Would you have any advice for a person coming from the United States, regarding immigration to The Netherlands?

Lastly, I'd like to say again that I envy your weed :) it looks like some of the best I have ever seen. Well I hope you enjoy it.

Best wishes.

There are three means for immigration, the first is being a asylum seeker, the second is to marry a Dutch person and the third is a work permit. There are really only two ways for a non-EU citizen to get a work permit:

The first way is to apply directly to companies yourself. You cannot use a recruitment agency because the clients require that all candidates have their paperwork in order. This is because it saves the companies a lot of time as they are looking for people who can begin work immediately. Applying for a work permit may take up to 6 months and companies just do not have the time to do that.
If, however, you do apply to companies on your own and they would like to hire you, then they will start the permit process for you. This is not as easy as it sounds. The company has to prove that it is in their best interest to hire you above all other Dutch and EU candidates. They also have to prove that the job has been advertised for at least six weeks and that they have interviewed Dutch and EU candidates, yet you were the best person for the job.

If you obtain a work permit through a company, please bear in mind that this work permit is bound to the company. If you stop working for that company, the permit will no longer be valid.

The second way of getting a work permit is if you have a Dutch or EU partner. Your partner must be living and working in the Netherlands and be willing to sponsor you. That essentially means that they agree to be financially responsible for you while you are looking for a job or if you happen to lose one. The two of you must prove that you are in a relationship and that you live together. If the relationship should end or one of you should move out, the permit will no longer be valid.

For more information, please take a look at www.workpermit.nl
Also take a look at http://www.undutchables.com
Good luck, you will need it

Thanks for the help! You replied in much more detail than what I was expecting. I will definately utilise these resources.

Do most employers not drug test for marijuana in Holland? I'm confused, since it's technically illegal isn't it?

Wotan
07-26-2006, 08:06 PM
Its illegal and legal by law, the law works in both ways. Its officially tolerated by law, which allows me to smoke while walking down the street. Therefore employers usely donâ??t do drugtest, doing a drug test is actually the same as doing an alcohol test during a test interview: its not even thought off.

I had many job interviews and never had to do any test, people expect you to work in a clear state of mind not being drunk nor stoned.

Like I wrote before: when you go to Holland, try to visit more then just Amsterdam. You havent seen the Netherlands/Holland by visiting Amsterdam. Go a day by train to the south or North (leeuwarden/groningen), or east(utrecht/nijmegen/arnhem...) to see more of the country and find cheaper prices.

Wow I love that Tulip guide! Did you do that yourself? When I visit Amsterdam later this year (still saving up) Im hoping to make one of those... or get someone in the coffeeshop to help me!
When I do come, would you be able to show me around if this is OK? I plan on visiting on my own. Do you have MSN where we can talk about this?

Cool man , there used to be a bar on the Schoolstraat that sold but that was 6 years ago and I don't know if they are still there plus I can't remember the name of the bar.:o
If you're ever in the bar on the seafront with a raised glassed off terrace that's where I used to drink with friends.

I have to agree with everything said in that.

I can't believe I missed this.

I agree 100% man there is soooo much more to see.

De Efteling especialy for anyone with kids http://www.efteling.nl/home.aspx
The Zwart Markt in Beverwijk the absolute best place for bargains IMO
The Strand (Beach) Race at Scheveningen (I love the sound of that place name) http://www.motocrossplanet.com/
Even Madurodam is worth a look with it's miniatures of Nederlandse landmarks http://www.madurodam.nl/

Ahoy in Rotterdam is a primo venue for concerts and monster trucks and all sorts of things.
Het Paardje in Den Haag is worth going to for a sweet night out.
Even something as inane as hiring a canoe in Leiden and just trolling round the waterways with a J and some friends can be a pleasant way to waste an afternoon.

PS Good coffee shops in Leiden.:D

To all who are planning on visiting please remember to treat the place with the respect it deserves ;) ty

Hi psychocat, I am impressed by your English, not often do I meet Englishmen who can actually write and speak in Dutch, not many seem to take an effort to do so ;)

I have heard of Noordwijk but never been there also I have to admit: I never really been to Leiden, I passed trough with car and train. But still need to discover the city, its supposed to be really fun and cousy. What did you think of Leiden?

Hi again Wotan,

I have been trying to get in a Netherlands holiday for quite some time. Tried this year, but didn't have the cash. I have always wanted to attend the GP at Assen, better known in the racing world as the Cathedral. maybe next year.

peace,

As for the immigration info above....so, do you think an American can seek asylum in Holland? Afterall, I'm trying to flee a repressive country...the US does not allow free choice when it comes to same sex marriage, abortion, prositution, euthanasia or pot smoking. As the US moves closer to a theocracy run by the religous right, I'm giving serious thought to spending time in other countries, to see how others live....

What do you think Wotan? The Dutch are so rational and reasonable...do I stand a chance?

Wotan
07-28-2006, 07:01 PM
I am affraid not sorry. The thing is when you want to seek asylum you must come out of a country which is recognised as unsafe, or where your human rights are violated. Now the problem is that: even when you fit one of the criteriaâ??s and you can prove it, the Netherlands are supposed to take you in and by that make the statement that the U.S. is a inhuman country.

Now I can imaging a whole political war starting, resulting in even worse boycotts then North Korea suffers. The Netherlands will probably become one of the ashes of evil, especially when you think of the drugpolicy which is in US government eyes nothing more then the result of man- and willpower ... which is true :p So because of this I do not belief you have a change, but do you belief it?! you are not the first to try this.

(I once read on the internet, on some forum, a topic of an American who was trying to get asylum, but failed after failing and failing)

IanCurtisWishlist

the whole theory of an "axis of evil" is biased and faulty, not to mention ignorant. I hate that fucking cowboy george bush, i hate what he is doing to this country and i hate what he is doing to the world. I want asylum in Holland because I feel that they are the most logical and liberal country.

I hope you are enjoying Holland you lucky bastard :)

Wotan

I assume the saying: the grass is always greener on the other side is true. I am not a big fan of Holland and prefer to move to Norwegian, that is also why I have studied Norwegian for 3 years, I donâ??t like the politics in Holland and the road the country has been moving on for the 20/30 years.

Actually upcoming Monday I will move out of Holland towards Fryslân, a much more layed back place. Without to much tourist and immigrants, not that there is something wrong per definition with an immigrant, but I prefer to have Dutch neighbours with who I can drink a beer, bbq and communicate :) And these are rare in Holland.

So Fryslân here I come (I am also born there), Fryslân is a bit like Scotland, or Catalonia for that part. It has its own official language, which is with Dutch the official language in the Netherlands. But it is lacking really big cities and therefore the immigration doesnâ??t come this far north. (immigrants seems to be attracted by big cities like: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag, which are all in Holland), but to be fair, ages ago the Frisians immigrated out of Denmark and Sweden to this place (this is also why I have been brought up with a Scandinavian next to Dutch orientation.

The cannabis culture is lucky cultivated all over the Netherlands, and I am sure I will not miss much of Amsterdam. Actually I will live right in the centre of the capitol of Fryslân with five pubs, a fast food restaurant, a snackbar, two clubs, a theatre and a coffeeshop on the other side of the street. And a fitness centre as neighbours, a supermarket at the street corner (30 meter) and the station 100 meter away :D

When anyone ever happens to be in Leeuwarden (capitol of Fryslân, 45 min by car from Amsterdam ), let me know :rasta: Needless to say I am excited to get the key and move, I must have bugged and told a dozens of people about it :o
