What are you trying to do that you want to 'upgrade' XP...which, there really isn't one aside from the SPs. Get a Knoppix ISO, grab Oreillys Running Linux (5th ed I think they have now) and fire it up! A whole new world awaits!

I installed linux once, and absolutely everything I tried to download or open resulted in an error message.
and really, viruses aren't really a problem with XP if you know how to remove them.
make it legal

You haven't thought about trying one of the live-CD distros? That could be a easy compromise. I keep a copy of Knoppix STD .01 in my CD case and also have a Libretto L5W with Debian. Now putting Debian on that machine while I was a Linux newb was not the smartest thing to attempt...but I muddled through it. Still haven't worked on some of the drivers though.

There's not much updating to be done with xp. . . .
If your copy is legal then just go to the micro site here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/default.mspx and check
for the latest patches, fixes ect. . . .
Peace. . . .

I always preferred windows over linux... Windows practically works for itself while there is a big learning curve to linux... I ran linux for 5 months and just could never get to like it... maybe if linux was what i started on it might be dif,but I don't think so...

You could go for the new Windows Media Center. It's not really worth it in my opinion though.. I'd wait for vista.

If your really worried about viruses and security issues just get Linux or Mac. Other than that just update Windows when your prompted to and stay off of sites that is obviously malicious and dont try to learn about hacking or talking to people about hacking on forums with random people.
And make it legal Linux is really only good for hacking...well atleast to me it is :p.

Holding many MCSE certs. gives me some room to explain a few things. Microsoft is the one of the few companies you buy something from that is "a work in progress". A lot of the updates are for security so it is best to download them all. Most people who flame windows do not know what they are talking about. More BSD...blue screens of death...come from problems with chipsets on motherboards or motherboard communication related failures. They can also be caused by added software that has conflicts.
I would seriously urge staying with XP or 2K. Vista is far from ready for home use. It will require massive memory and processing power compared to XP.
My kids braces and massive game collection has been paid for by people bringing in their comps that did not have security patchs DL'ed and virus protection running. Will say it once..if you are not running an updated virus protection you are asking for trouble.

Windows XP is the current version of 'Windows.'
You can download Service pack 1 and Service pack 2 Free from Microsoft...these will keep you current.
Vista is Microsofts next version of 'Windows"...it will arrive in 2007. (with many bugs)
Windows XP still has a few(3+) years of life remainng ...no problem.

personally i hate windows, i don't trust them as far as i could throw the CD.
i was reading a actual, that one scientist found some left over files for a built in key logger(that they never finish), this wouldn't surprise me if they got the key logger fully working in vista.
and there only excuse they well give if they get caught. will be that's a national security issue.
this would mean if they do input this logger in to where it can't be detected. there would be no more illegal downloads or anything else in that matter.
i mean come on the government differently gots some connections with the richest company's Microsoft

FAB...most all bad things come from good ideas...the atom bomb, lane bryant tubetops, and a keylogger to name a few. A keylogger can give you real time back-up ability. Ever visit a website and days later could not for the life of you recall what it was? Would it not be cool to just open a file and look for what you had typed around the time you think you saw the site? Or say someone accused you of saying something you didn't...just open a file and show your evidence of what you said. I have a keylogger on my daughters computer, I never view it. It is a security thing. If something happens to her I have a resource to maybe find out if maybe it was an abduction and by who might have done it.
You would be surprised what could be buried deep in any software package,
