After tons of shopping, browsing, looking, brain storming etc...there is much about a good grow that the grower shouldn't want to 'go cheap' on. Bulbs, ballasts, pH/tds meters and automated systems to name a but a few. Saving money on items less critical than grow light set-ups, carbon filters, good nutrients, CO2 and such...means having more money available to purchase things a grower ought not be frugal about. (who wouldn't spend the extra money on a more comfy toilet paper eh)

But...go to a grow shop, or peruse a grow shop's catalog...you will see an abundance of grow and propagation gear that is made of...plastics.

And I tell you friends...a LOT of those plastics are easily found at your local grocer ala plastic food containers.

ie...why bother with driving to a shop, or paying for the shipping of a no frills propagation dome when you'd find the same thing in a bakery...for a bit more money sure...except that the domes there come with a tasty cake underneath them!

Or...until you find, and can afford good quality light reflective linings for your area...ever seen just how much a white t-shirt glows amber when exposed to a HPS light source? Say you've a 7 gallon container, simply pull your shirt over the container so the neck is at the top...which leaves plenty of room for the plant to grow...covers the soil, and bounces a nice glow of warm light up to the bottoms of the leaves. (tip...thicker cotton t-shirts (as in, new) reflect light more completely and evenly than something worn thin.) If your plant is already up and growing...holding the shirt flat, neck and sleeve side up toward the plant...simply lay it flat, butted right against the stalk for the same effect. I do this with a 6 gallon (24 quarts) transparent, plastic Sterilite container. All it needs are holes drilled all along the bottom's circumfrence...and then the same along the bottom of the sides.

[attachment=o76967] $4.50 each at my local Big Lots store.

The handles make for easy lifting...the lid can go underneath for minor drainage...with the added perks of being able to monitor the conditions of your plant's roots as well as being able to see moisture content of your soil. Keep in mind though, just because you may not see any root, or moisture, between the soil and the container wall doesn't mean that neither is NOT present laterally deeper into the soil. Gotta keep it covered though! Or else, risk the chance of algae in your soil!

Okay...so that's my contribution on practical money saving alternatives...

Please add some of your own so that us growers can skimp on non-crucial items so we've more money for the hardware that doesn't pay to 'go cheap' on.

Are ya a coffee drinker?

Why buy containers for sprouting/early vegging when this rugged number comes supplied with your coffee!

Drill or pierce a bunch of drain holes in the bottom and its ready for soil.

Having a need to pH your water out of the tap?

A 5 gallon water bottle makes for a handy reservoir.

[attachment=o77075]

Alls it needs are 1/2 gallon increments marked along the side. ie...pour water in a half gallon at a time, when the movement of the water settles, mark a line and designate the amount.

Plus that's a great excuse to buy a cake or cookies for an after smoke-snack!

Now see...thats what I call using available items on hand instead of purchasing a thing that would result in the same result!

btw ice...looks like you'll have to fix that broken ladder before being able to pull off one helluva 'in your face pig' type of grow.

Headline...'Recent Alcatraz tourists have been violating the curfew of the facility and have made excessive orders for pizza and chinese take-out delivery. Island authorties are baffled as to the spike in tourist numbers.'

Slow,
Should you need just empty deli containers you can go to any of the 100's of foodservice supply places online and usually a case is 100 containers or so. If you got a few growers in your area could spilt em up and everyone is supplied. It's all the same shit bro, one is sold as a "specialty hydro item", and the other is sold as a "cheap packaging solution" for deli's, bakeries, etc.

But I completely agree, shop around for this stuff. Its all made in the same place, just sold and marketed as different items to a different crowd. Its not like the hydro version is some high tech NASA developed plastic or something.

The newer, plastic clear top, black bottom that chinese carry-out has been coming in recently is another one of those things you just happen to end up with that is good for anyone from a new grower on up to the elders of the lot.

Hellz...we end up with three of those here at a pop.

Spray pumps from any sort of household screwed into a 16 oz water or soda bottle makes for a working mister/foliar sprayer.

Yeesh...sounds ghettofied eh. I do mine from a mountain dew bottle. It my bit toward recycling!

Be sure to throughly clean out the the previous contents of the sprayer by squirting plain water through it till your hand is ready to fall off.

I better not mention the part about me using another empty mountain dew I sliced the bottom off of and placed over one of the low watt warmer colored cfls I use all around the house, in order to get green light in the room when I go in there during the darker part of the plants day.

i work in a kitchen and never pay for any potting containers. you can get everything from 1gal to 5gal. youd be suprised at just how many containers are thrown out from kitchens. all you have to do is look out back. most everything that comes in is in some kind of container that is perfect for growing.

Well...

Heres the one for this day...

When doing a fast dry using your oven...a ventilated pizza or shoe box will get you a more uniform, quicker dry time, and a nice buffer tween your bud and the high enough to vaporize thc temps that come off the oven's elements.

Pizza box is preferred, shoe box will do.
