It's good that the president didn't choke on that buttered roll... for health reasons, really (high cholesterol and sodium), not to imply that the president of the U.S. should choke on a buttered roll.

Ooh, now. Don't wish him to choke just yet. That'd just drive oil prices up worse.

Bush sounds just like everyone I talk to every day--the classic Texas good ole boy. Which, of course, is what he is. I wish people didn't automatically hear that accent in those of us who use it and just automatically assume stupidity.

Here, particularly, I don't agree with the "idiot" description. Actually, if you listen to his message, it's one of the most intelligent and succinct summations of what needs to happen that there is. "The irony is what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this shit and it's over." He's right, of course. I freely admit that he omitted the very obvious point that we the U.S. could effectively encourage Israel to "stop doing this shit," too.

I've listened to different edits of this tape all day long today, and the most troubling thing about MSNBC's particular coverage was that channel's characterization of Bush as sounding dismissive of Kofi Anan. I didn't think he sounded dismissive at all. He was simply asking a question. That, to me, was a complete editorialization on the part of NBC. I have never before believed that the mainstream news outlets portray him unfairly, but I'm going to try and be more attuned to that as an objective listener/former reporter myself after seeing this because I thought that "dismissive" comment was complete opinion and nothing more.

I'm not a Bush supporter, as most folks know, but I thought what he actually said was pretty much on target here. People like to call him dumb because of the good ole boy factor, and I agree that the guy's not an intellectual. But here his statement just struck me as simple and true--and in his subsequent sentence, he didn't sound dismissive at all of the U.N. secretary general.

Anyone agree with me here?

I agree with you. I hate Bush whole heartedly, and think he is an evil man - BUT I think this whole thing has been blown out of proportion. If people, even the president, have to always be politically correct when in private conversations, things have gotten out of hand. I agree with PC in a public forum, or in mixed company, but when two people are having what they think is a private conversation, other people need to just back off.

I don't think he runs the country whatsoever. Maybe I just give this place too much credit, but I think the actual owners (Haliburton/Tobacco Companies/Bush Oil Refineries/Chia Pets) are far more intelligent.

Everybody loves to hate a patsy.

If you actually listen to it he says "yeah Blair" I still don't like Bush but I saw it on the news and that's what he said.

I would agree with that partly, Birdgirl. Terrorism is a shitty, cowardly tactic that isn't working, but disproportionate responses only create death and destruction and future resentment... It's like banking your enemies. The trouble I have with his comment (and others related to this) is how he blames Hezbollah for all this. I've long accepted this as a political struggle between terrorists and other sovereign nations against Israel. Tactics on both sides aren't working and never will.

I'd have been much happier to hear Dubya tell Olmert to back off... the only other path seems to be more, escalating violence.

BTW - Good of you to volunteer to take one for the team, but wait, I hear Edwards knocking

I was at the Taste of Chicago and we were going to cross Lake Shore Drive to get to the boats. So we ask this woman (whom obviously was doing something with the traffic) if she could help us cross. So she says "We can't let anyone cross the street because it's the President's route to the hotel." Then we decided, maybe we should flip him off (Sounds dumb, but it sounded good at the time). Well, as we were waiting, Lake Shore Drive started to become busy and everyone was under the impression that he had changed his route.

Then as we're on the boat we see all the cops and the limo.

I was so disappointed.

I highly doubt GWB is any sort of legitimate Texan good ole' anything other than a dirty desert snake.

He was born in New Haven, CT.
The Bushes oved to Midland when he was two.
Vacantioned back to CT several times a year being as GHWB had plenty of federal holidays and a fat congressional recesses to play with up there in Kennebunkport ME.

At the age of 15, he enters the Phillips Academy in Anderson, MA September 1961, June 1964

Yale University September 1964, May 1968

Harvard Business School 74'-75'

And on and on etc etc....

Reading about his life and times leads me to believe his time in Texas, after any time during his early adulthood to present...has been merely a series of stints here and there scattered over less than a 1/3 of his total years.

I dunno...I spose folks can take him at face value if they want to. But which face eh.

It's sad that the American people thought he was the best man for the job. I don't think Bush is below average intelligence, but I doubt he's much above average either. Surely, out of 300 million people, we could find someone smarter to run the show. But I guess the smartest people don't really want the job, so we're left with the dregs.

I was sold on him being full-o-shit as soon as I heard him speaking during his first campaign for President. Something to the effect of the people being able to trust him in D.C. on account of him having no ties to beltway politics.

Him saying this despite gobs of history of his ties to capitol circles of whos whos on the scene during his father's political career...and the fact that he was the point man for his father's succesful run for the Oval Office.

ffs...GWB is about the most transparent liar I've ever seen speak.

It's sad that the American people thought he was the best man for the job.

Actually the American people never thought that ... The American people would rather stay home and vote on American Idol .... The American VOTERS thought he was a teeny, tiny, bit better than Kerry in 2004 .... and who knows who American's wanted as president in 2000 ???

You are RIGHT jams ... the smart guys don't want that job ... they wanna be CEO's and pull in millions of dollars for doing nothin ....

Gore would've been awesome. With "An Inconvient Truth" and all that.

Anyone's better than Bush though.

The only thing that bugged me about Gore was that he said he was glad he wasn't president during 9/11.

And his fucking wife.
