1,000W does put out some heat.

But, they also put out some lumens.

You can place it within 12" comfortably IF you have a fan blowing the heat up and away from the top of the plant so the heat never hits it.

No less than 24" if you don't.

Almost everything you need is already somewhere on this board. To answer your question though, you want the light as close to the plants as you can get without burning them. A simple (but imperfect) way to do it is to put your hand under your light. At the distance your hand can stay comfortable under without heating up too much is safe for the plants, but ideally you want the plants to be in an air temperature under 84 degrees. If you are sealing the light and cooling it using forced air, you will get the light alot closer to the plants then if you aren't. I am running a 1000 right now over my plants and have it approximately 36 inches above. Once I get my vortex fan I will be able to seal the enclosure and move it much closer. Hope this helps. Also check out the website:

That has a lot of the information for the deceased overgrow website, which should be able to answer most questions you have. Good luck.

i've got a 1000w about 8 inches above plants and they have doing , ALRIGHT!!
i've got glass in the hood, and i've got a 465 cfm sucking the heat out the hood as well..
and then another fan on the ground blowing all heat upwards, away from plants..
so yeah, i guess it's all based upon what type of ventilation you've got man..

It depends on many factors. If you have a cool tube with good sucking/blowing power, you can have your light right in the plants. If you have an open light with no fan blowing on it, you had better keep a 1000 watter a couple of feet away at least to start. See how that works for awhile as you watch the plants closely. Put your hand next to the tops of the plants and see how hot it is. If it is uncomfortable for your hand, it will probably be so for the plants too, and they will rebel somehow. Keep moving your light closer and closer, checking and watching each time. As soon as you see any sign of light or heat stress, pull it back 2 or 3 inches and keep it that far away from the plants at all times. A little testing in the beggining, and you will know forever, unless you buy a different brand bulb, or your ventilation starts to get plugged up somehow, like at the filter.

Also, if you get your light too close, it may not cover the outer areas of the grow as well. Watch that too.
