View Full Version : Would beer have an effect on my plants?

I had a seedling with a long skinny stem and very small leaves that didn't look too healthy. So I ripped it out of the soil and put it in a half-full beer bottle as a joke like it was a vase. I forgot about it for a few days and when I saw it again, it was still growing. The bottom leaves were holding it up and the roots were hanging in the beer. I figured it would mold eventually, so I put it back in the soil, and wet the soil down with a few more sips of beer. For about a week since then, my plant has survived on a mixture of water and Belgian Ale. I think my plant may be an alcoholic. :)
So my question is - could this have any extra positive or negative effect on the plant? I know it's just taking the water from the beer, but what about the other ingredients in there? So far it hasn't done any better or worse than a normal plant, but it is still growing.

doesnt sound to bad man but if you think about it after a night of drinking beer for me i feel dehydrated even though beer has alot of water in it, it may have a slow affect on the plant cause of the alcohol content so keep it in mind

Beer will make your plants too drunk to grow.
Maybe get arrested.

I think the only beer that will effect your plants, is that if you are drunk and killed them all!

It was Belgian Ale, but I stopped using it.
It was just an experiment to see what would happen. Surprisingly, the plant stayed alive but it didn't seem to grow much. I was alternating between beer and water after I put it in soil. I might try 100% light beer (no water) with a future plant and see what happens.
Now this same plant is getting MG for Tomatoes and it's right under a little skylight so it's like a mini greenhouse, but with more ventilation. Someday I'll take pictures of the miracle beer plant and post them. It only has 3 leaves on each stem so I think it might be a male but I'm not sure yet - it's still too small.
