I don't think that's necessarily true about how we'd all vote. There are some well-mannered conservatives, too.

In this instance, I don't see why the rules here ought to be different. Seriously. I think if any areas merit manners and civility, it ought to be politics and sexuality. Particularly because they tend to be heated subjects. But also because they're particularly influential, too. The conservative talking heads on TV ought not to be allowed to get away with the insults they freely throw around, either, but it draws ratings in so they do, and the insults further draw in the simpletons who watch them devotedly, too, because they're not discriminating enough to watch or understand a sane, reasoned discussion. Also, the Shout TV factor, as it's called, treads a very fine line and often doesn't quite cross the line into incivility.

I use the word influential, particularly in regards to sexuality because we have so many youngsters on that board and so many of them don't seem to be getting any encouragement toward reasonable, respectful behavior from any other direction. I know we're not their mamas or daddies, but we can set an example and take the high road.

As for the low-road takers here on politics, their incivility and profanity is generally an indicator that they don't have the intellectual capability to articulate themselves in any other way. Yes, political discussions get heated. But in the rules of debate or in a conversation in someone's living room, which is what I think this is like, I have to hope people wouldn't get so out of control.

Manners and civility say a lot about people. You don't see people (other than our vice president) cursing and using profanity in either of the houses of our legislature. You don't see it being allowed in debate rules, either. The only reason it happens here is that I think the worst "anger-meisters" are also the worst cowards. They hurl insults and tell others to go you-know-what themselves because they're anonymous and also because I think they must feel very impotent in other areas. They're often also very immature.

I vote for manners. I always do. I don't say this because I'm a lady or a Southerner, although I think those factors probably color my opinions. I say it because I think manners and civility are a dying breed and because I think the rules enforcement has done a great deal to make the rest of these boards a safer, more enjoyable place to be. Particularly for women, who are in the minority here.

Yeah, I knew I'd be outvoted in a big way when it started. For one thing, I'm totally out-manned. Guys are a lot more comfortable with flames and heated insults than ladies are. I still had to vote with my heart, even knowing I'd lose. Manners still matter a lot to me. Maybe because I'm still working at fine-tune parenting in the art of manners to a young man. I do support the total freedom to express controversial opinions on issues. If someone wants to compare Bush to Hitler, or claim that the holocaust never happened ..... back it up and come hard with it.

I think that forum guidelines should be followed in a general sense,over at Marihemp politics,we are un-moderated there,for the most part and things don't git much out of hand..lol.

First of all, hope all is well with you and yours. The only reason I brought this up was because of a post made in the lounge. As for myself, I feel that if your in here debating politics you have a little more going for yourself intellectually than a child and therefore shouldn't need "big brother" watching. Likewise, there should be room for reasonable debate without having to resort to "flaming" but I DO UNDERSTAND that in the heat of battle we all some time lose our cool a bit. (I've stated the same to sundance by the way)

I'm still debating with myself on the free usage of "Zionist" in here based on racial slang.

But then on the other hand it is highly used by peoples of the middle east and others that don't believe that there should have been a Jewish state set up in the middle east.....real catch 22 I guess. I also feel that the purpose of this forum wasn't intended to be a back slapping session for those of like views but instead a platform that ALL people can state their opinions and debate issues. I realize that some do post in here for no other reason but to raise some fur but that's kind of what the "ignore" option is about.....hell, pisshead has me on ignore...at least he used to.:D

This is what I follow for rules in here....no racial attacks (like we have all unfortunately seen in here) and no personal attacks on members by accusing them of unjust things without ANY proof (which is kind of what started this). Just because you lean to the right does not make you DEA or government agent. I'd make a left comparison but really don't feel right about doing it.;)

Pretty obvious how this poll is going so this is the heads up. If you take a complaint to the lounge, feedback, etc....you better have a legit cause or your ass may be on the block for "personal attacks" based on the rules followed in the other forums.

Hope this seems fair to all and if not, make a statement! THIS is up for open debate also.

Altho this does not validate the attack made on him. There are other ways to handle a disagreement, to do so requires makeing a personal choice.

Over the last months Ive learned a great deal about myself, and where I stand on topics I'm interested in. But the most important thing Ive learned is that I really dont "know" anything. That everything in life is subject to change at the will of whatever happens next.

As far as pics are concerned, I don't know how you judge those, either. Pics that say bad things about politicians and parties seem normal. Heck, you see those on bumper stickers. And those folks are public figures. You have to expect some of that.

In your pics, Torog, I haven't ever seen what other people might call rude pics. I've seen more "pro" pics than anti pics generally. You post things that celebrate Christianity and America. I really like that. It's like positive campaigning versus negative.

The nudity rule makes sense, Psycho4Bud. But I haven't ever seen any nudity pics on these boards. Does it happen and just get taken down before we ever see it?

Torog, when you read this thread in the morning, you may start hating me. I sure hope not! But i've had all day to think about that picture above. And then here's this. I just was on another thread where someone named American Terrorist posted some pics that really were inflammatory to Muslims. And who was the next poster but an Islamic person who truly did take offense at them. And rightfully so.

Now I don't think your visual above is the same thing as the five pics he posted. And I respect your right to have created it and posted it. I love the questions above the picture because they're right on as far as asking what needs to be asked. They're also wickedly funny! But the part I worry about is the treatment of the word Islam with the swastika and stuff. I think about all the peace loving, religiously tolerant Islamic folks I know and love and have worked with. Then I think about that other thread I mentioned. Then I try and put myself in their shoes looking at the graphic treatment of Islam in your pic. Anyway, after I though about it again, it made me uneasy, and I knew I wouldn't sleep unless I unburdened my heart about it.

You're a great and considerate gentleman, Torog. You've always been that way in your dealings with me and with others that I've seen. I think the world of that. I think that's why I felt comfortable raising the sensitivity question here because I know you to be a sensitive, considerate man. Maybe I'm just being over-sensitive myself. I had to read Bong's post twice to see what he was referring to on the vote count. Then I finally mustered up the brain power to actually look at the tally. Then I saw your post, P4B. Funny! That was a good trick! I guess everyone was too busy looking and conspiracy forest to see the trees here in this thread.

This story only has to do with the topic of manners, not political moderation, but it's one of the funniest things I ever witnessed. In the retirement home in north Louisiana where my grandmother lived, there was a great Southern lady named Miss Effie. During most of her lifetime, Miss Effie was the most genteel, well-mannered, ladylike thing. Always kind and courteous, even under the most difficult circumstances.

But when she grew old and senile and went to live in the rest home, that long lifetime of ladylike manners flew out the window. Hardening of the arteries turned Miss Effie into, well, a little old sailor who could curse a blue streak. If people walked down the hall outside her room and happened to glance into it, she'd yell, "What in the G-d hell are you looking at, you wall-eyed jackass!!??" And that was some of her more tame language. Another of her favorite lines was simply to yell, at the top of her lungs, "Bring me a G-d piece of bread with some f-ing mayonnaise on it!"
