Gnats???

r gnats attracted to MJ? im not sure what they really r, but to me they seem to b gnats. at first i thought they might have been white flies, but there r not. Is it ok to spray the plants with some kind of bug killer for plants when the plant is in the flowering stage? Thnx

not sure, gnats eat nectar though, i just saw it on jeopardy.

I bet they are fungal gnats.

You are growing in dirt right?

They come from the soil and are caused by over watering.

They live in the dirt until they can fly. Then they just hang out around where they came from laying more eggs. They are more of a pest then a major problem. They do live off the roots just so you know they can do damage.

Mostly they are a pain in the ass and you want to get rid of them before you harvest. You don't want bugs in your buds when you smoke them they have a tendency to pop and wreck the taste of the bud.

Gnattrol is the best thing you can get to get rid of them but it's hard to find. What ever you use you must break the life cycle so that takes weeks to do. You must keep up the pressure on them as they hatch and kill them off before they can lay more eggs. That is breaking the life cycle.

The three most commonly seen flying pests indoors are fungus gnats, whiteflies, and thrips. All of them have a life stage in the soil. The last 2 munch on leaves and leave pale patches.
I am most familiar with thrips because I have had problems with them. They lay eggs in the soil and tiny larvae hatch out and start climbing up the plants to munch the leaves. The larvae are blondish and look like a splinter of wood, if you can picture that.

All 3 pests can be caught on yellow sticky traps. Peel the backing off and put the traps right at the soil surface.

Pyrethrin and neem are both good controls for these pests.

Be very careful using any chemicals around your buds. My advice is to only use sprays up to the 4th week of flowering, and after that just stick with the sticky traps to keep the numbers down.

If you only have a few plants you can take and rinse the roots off remove all the soil and repot. I probaly wouldn't do it if they are in flower but veg will be fine for sure when you repot them put a layer of sand on top 2" thick to prevent them from getting back in. also gnatrol works good with 3 applications 5 days apart that will kill the larve the stick traps mention before will help with the adults but Pyrethrin foggers work best. My 1st grow I had them bad so bad they were stuck to the nugs and died it was nasty. I took a noodle strainer and a trash bag put the weed in the strainer the strainer in the bag then a bungee cord around the top of the strainer to keep the nugs from getting out into the bag than shake it the gnats fall off the buds through the strainer and stick to the trash bag do to static electricity. Cleaned up you couldn't even tell I still never smoked any just the thought of it. I moved it to a friend at a discounted price.

too much water attracts them. just hang a fly strip. they gnats are relatively harmless.

well i doubt they r bein attracted 2 the MJ from too much water, b/c i try not to water to much jus to b safe...but will def try the fly strip...thnx daima

about the look off the larvae, i think i saw several of those descriptions on the stem of the main leaves, (not the stock)...i kinda jus scraped them off not knowin what they where...was that a bad idea? and the sticky traps, jus place them right on the soil in the pot? For spray...a friend gave me some stuff he used b4...its Spectracide Tomato & vegetable insect spray...i only used it once, b/c it kinda f*ked up the leaves on a few plants that were a lil younger then the rest, but it seemed to have worked for a wk or 2(im sure i should keep goin), but is this kind of spray ok? it has that pyrethrins in it(0.02%), Im in the 3rd week of flowering so should i jus use the pray like one more time then go with the sticky traps, or jus go with tha traps? thnx.... u guys r tha best....

STINKY...correction....on that larvae thing... as i looked a lil more closely, maybe not quite a wood splinter but more like a tiny dirt mound of sorts...??? any one wit ne thoughts on that??? thnx

The gnats arent interested in the plants. they are interested in the damp soil.
the strips should help.

Just lay the strips right on the soil, or stick them on a chopstick stuck in the dirt.
Stop spraying pyrethrins the 3rd week of flower.
