Ok, so the beginning of fall semester I am studying abroad in Jerusalem.

Just wondering if anyone here is from Israel? Like, my friends are freaking out thinking that I'll be kidnapped by some terrorist organization or something. I mean, I am a hick, and gullible. And being almost six foot tall and blonde I probably will look outta place.

But Isreal isn't as bad as say Lebanon, or Iraq correct? I mean, being a democratic state.

Just wondering if anyone has any tips for me on how to stay safe and get the most out of my experience there.

Heya guys,

Thanks for the responses. I am a science major currently studying geology with a minor in archeology. It's one of the oldest cities in the world and also very close to Egypt, which has endless archeological possibilities.

I am also interested in the Hebrew language. And above all, my father is a preacher and thinks that going to Jerusalem will change my life and all. And it would be cool to see the Damascus gate, and garden tomb, and the baths at bethsheba (sp?).

Oh yes, and have I also mentioned that I have an underlying obsession with middle eastern men. (Don't tell my mother that).

Anyways...I was just wondering like if there is random bombings in the city. I'd hate to get blown into a million tiny peices. I know the Gaza Strip is really dangerous, and don't plan on going there.

Well now I'm rambling..so I'll stop.

well theyll probably laugh at you, them being jewish and all. lol wouldnt recommend it in palestine tho obviously. but yeah u'll be fine, odds are u wont be blown up. most areas are very secure, the ones that arent have one or two bombs a year. thats not much in a country of whatever million. thank god its not arab is all i can say...theres lots of normal young people going around partying and getting high. i love psychedelic trance personally, and israel is the psytrance capital of the world, they have some amazing raves over there. have a blast u lucky person

Being Jewish I have a good many relatives living in Israel as well as friends...they always tell me it's not nearly as bad there as the media often makes it out to be. Go and enjoy yourself it's a great place :)

I would give anything to study abroad in the middle east...even though its a dangerous part of the world, its still amazing when it comes to its historic facts.

Israel is one of the most peaceful place's on earth. Go enjoy your stay. But dont be stupid and wonder off in the middle of the night. When you go out. Watch your money and id. Because there are bad people. Other than that I wish i was in your shoes. Id love to be there now. Lucky:)

Jerusalem is marvelous. I visited there in the summer just before starting college with a church group. The history, the culture. It's wonderful.

But with world events what they are this very moment, I'm not sure anyone can reliably say that it's a safe place to be. It may be safe this weekend but more dangerous a month from now. And if you were my daughter (you must be almost exactly the same age as my son, who is 20), I'd be worried sick about you going over there for this fall semester. The situation in the mid-east is degenerating quickly with each passing day.

Bears repeating. Recent developments lead me to believe that things will be getting worse, not better. Me thinks it would be better to go latter than go when it's bad and always be looking over your shoulder.

Please forgive me for being so negative, it's not my intention to be a buzzkill. You're very lucky to be able to go, and I hope the situation rights itself promptly to ensure your saftey!
