There's a differance between teaching them right from wrong and lying to them to scare them. Drugs are illegal, and no kid should be told to go out and smoke weed (I wish I would have waited untill I was older to start). What gets to me is that these fear tactics don't do anything except breed an assload of idiot drug users who have never been taught the differnce between abuse and responsible use.
It isn't just drugs though... I mean we all grew up being told what they think our minds could handle. For example, I do not know many people that graduated from high school who could honestly tell me anything about General Custer and Little Big Horn, but I think everyone knows the cute story of our first Thanksgiving (which is also an outright lie). I mean there is a reason we have an undereducated apathetic public who believe what Fox News tells them.

Well, whether we *should* be teaching them that certain drugs are okay or not is a fair question. But we *are* teaching them that certain drugs are okay. We teach that alcohol is okay once you're 21 (or 18, or whatever your particular legal age is). And we teach that caffeine is okay. And we teach that nicotine and cigarettes are at least okay enough to be legal.

Perhaps instead of teaching children that this drug is okay and that drug isn't okay, we should just teach them to think rationally and make their own decisions, rather than cramming our (or others') opinions down their throats.

I'm so frustrated with this world's view on drugs.

In particular, I hate how they start teaching us that "drugs are bad" at such a young and impressionable age, and we are both miseducated and undereducated about drugs and everything about them. I remember that when I was young, I thought nobody would ever even do drugs. Years go by and once teenage years come around, a combination of growing up, curiosity, and the desire to do what you arent supposed to do start to kick in and we finally start to experiment. when i first saw this page i thought the exact same thing, what they do is have all these pages with the stuff they want on them, then in the drug classes in school they give you packets and have these websites on them and encourage you to go visit them and get on them as a class in a computer lab and "explore" them as a class

i don't really agree, but i do to a point. a child has so little maturity with which to make decisions. saying "stay away" is easier than giving them a lesson on how to avoid scam dealers, laced shit, meth etc. :) ........."class in DARE today we're going to learn how to get the most DANK for you DOLLAR" ...... :)

yup. if i have kids i would want them to be informed, but certainly it would be a terrible thing to fuck up a young child's development. they're so very susceptible when they're young. i have a friend of mine that spent his entire adolescene on one narcotic after another, including anything he could get his hands on. he spend 3years in juvee and rehab, and now is obviously mentally incapacitated. not retarded, but the drugs have obviously damaged his brain. he is slow, emotionally unstable etc.

i think we can all agree that there are plenty of substances in the world that can hurt you a lot; i think y'all are saying it right with "understanding" the difference between different substances. not just deciding to break the rules one day, uninformed, and OD on something you didn't know anything about.

i'll be honest. i've never smoked weed so i can't rightly comment. i'm 24 and i'm just now considering trying it. i'd just say to you if i may: do what you want. try different things in your life and find something you enjoy doing, hopefully many things. for me the outdoors and rock climbing is huge. for you maybe something else. if you want to give college a try (and heck, it really can help you) maybe try to raise your grades a bit. i heartily reccommend college to you. it's not for everyone and it's far from perfect, but it can help you find out about new things and a degree goes a long way toward oppening possibilities up for you. i hated grades and despised trying to get good ones, but now i'm studying what i love (biology, neurobiology). whatever you do, don't let anyone convince you you're a loser, you're not. and be very careful about what drugs you take. you don't have to give in to everything just cuz you smoke weed. research the actual effects of different drugs, and when in doubt protect yourself and avoid them.

and by all means try community college. i don't know where you live but you generally can transfer to a 4year easily from JC.

but if you don't want that there's nothing wrong with manual labor, self-entrepreneurship, anything like that. just make sure it's what YOU want, not what you let yourself get pushed into
