So... I'm sitting here, noticing what time is rapidly approaching, and I pause a second to wonder about how this tradition started. Anyone?

I herd it was just some day that a bunch of kids in california went and smoked weed.

I've heard there are hundreds of theories and no one actually knows where it first originated...oh well.

People do know how it started. It was started by a group of kids in the 70's who called themselves "the Waldos". They would get high outside of their school, San Rafael High School, near the statue of Louis Pasteur, and would say "420 Louis" as their secret code to one another. They have posters and fliers to prove it. It was spread across the country through Grateful Dead concerts, where it gained so many rumors.

there is no actual reason, but the most plausable, reasonable and most mentioned reason would be that there were a bunch of friends in college trying to figure out when they could all get together to smoke (as usual they didn't all have the same classes, times ect ect.) thus they eventually came up with 4:20, after awhile it spread....

you can't prove it's here-say nor can you prove those fliers weren't made (or even made up) just so they could be 'the creators of 420'...

Damn, somewhere here a while back there was a thread like this. I'm almost certain it started out in California with a bunch of stoner teens. They would all meet up at 4:20 and toke, so it honestly just started as a random time to smoke.

So basically what graph said.

That's the truth.

Okay. Haha. There's oddles of threads on exactly this subject.

This was in another thread, and basically confirms what graphy said.

still can't be proved, just saying unless someone has rock solid proof no one really 'knows' they're only theories... might i add, on a subject like this, nothing can be proved.... it's just literally impossible to prove it, you can say that such and such group made said thing globally famous, but you never know if someone and their unknown group actually made it all... or even if it was stolen from said group (yes i'm a smart ass and i'm a nit-picker, get used to it cuz that's just me:p )

That looks pretty rock solid to me. What are you looking for? Some type of mentioning in the Guiness Book? I'm standing by my guy, Waldo.

lol, and might I add, I was just going to mini-rant like that about how nothing can really be proven. Get outta my head :p

They supposedly made a whole bunch of posters and fliers that said 420 on them and definitely "look" like they're from the 70's. But you never really know, it could be just a bunch of people who want attention.

One time, I convinced a guy at work that there were still dinosaurs and that they were mostly still in Italy. Long story, and the guy was kinda special, but the point still stands that none of us really know anything for sure.

to the best of my knowledge, it was started by those califorian stoners tokin the after school social. then some how high times got ahold of the story and spread it. somehow it just stuck and has been around ever since the 70s i think. nothing to do with cops or chemicals.

nah i'd still probably try to argue with the fact that it's still uncertain ... that's just me... lol
