It's nation scaring time!!! lol. Such ridiculous propaganda. "Routine monitoring of internet chatrooms used by extremist groups" huh?!

They put out these stories so they can make the public believe that the Patriot Act is helping, when in fact they are lying and using the "war on terror" to create a dictatorship.

US authorities say they have disrupted the early stages of a plot to attack New York City's mass transit system.
The alleged plot was discovered during routine monitoring of internet chatrooms used by extremist groups.

One man has been arrested in Lebanon over the plot, but the FBI said it had no indication of imminent threats to New York's transport system.

A report in the city's Daily News tabloid said plotters discussed targets including the Holland Tunnel.

But the FBI has not elaborated on the details, saying in a statement that it had "disrupted a terrorist network that was in the planning stages of an attack against the transportation system in the New York-New Jersey area".

While not confirming any Al-Qaeda involvement in the plot, the statement stressed that Osama bin Laden's terror network continued "to have an interest" in attacking the United States.

"At this point in time, there is no specific or credible information that al-Qaeda is planning an attack on US soil," it added.

'Flood plan'

The BBC's Jeremy Cooke, in New York, says that this alleged bomb plot seems more ambitious than practical, but that the authorities are clearly taking it as a serious threat and acting accordingly.

The Daily News - which broke the story - says that the plan was to flood parts of the city, including the financial district by bombing the road tunnel.

Many New Yorkers though have been quick to point out that as Lower Manhattan is above the level of the river, the plan could never have actually worked, our correspondent adds.

The FBI said a crucial development in what it described as an "ongoing" investigation, had been the recent arrest of a key suspect in Lebanon.

Reports quoting Lebanese security sources said a suspect in the plot - named as Amir Andalousi - had been arrested a month ago.

Democratic Senator Charles Schumer of New York said this was one instance "where intelligence was on top of its game and discovered the plot when it was just in the talking phase".

A number of plots targeting subways, tunnels and other New York City landmarks have come to light since the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.

but in all reality would John Kerry made any real difference? I mean the worst thing is when they con us into a dems vs reps battle. Thats Bullshit!

It is the PEOPLE of this country vs. the TYRANNY of big government.

now im a terrorist because I criticized the government :)

you have to understand.. i guess the gov is the single largest employer in the nation and all those ppl dont want to lose their jobs so they are willing to throw you in jail for no reason because they can..

People are too stupid to see what is going to happen to them before its over and done with.. My family is Jewish (which means im Jewish of course) and they support a nationwide gun ban and national IDs.. how freaken stupid is that??? Maybe we should let history teachers say the Haulocaust and WW2 are fiction.. nobody seems to listen anyways. Trust me I am HATED at family reunions if politics are ever brought up..

now im a terrorist because I criticized the government :) Hey man, if I hate a big fascist tyranical government too, than consider me Osama Bin Laden!!! This is just a big repeat of history. Hitler said communists and Jews were behind the Reichstag Fire and problems of Germany and thus had to be eliminated. Now Bush says the evil freedom hating Muslims are out to destroy OUR FREEDOM! Lol funny, but a Muslim extremist never legislated my rights away, but George W. Bush sure did!!!

Who's the bigger terrorist???

Also, why is this so damn close to the Sears Tower plot?? NATION SCARING TIME!!!

Wow I always wondered what it would be like to live in Nazi Germany. I guess I got my wish...only it was Amerika that became the new fascist enemy.

US against THEM..I agree with you guys on that one but it will never happen.
People depend on the Government you know so its not likely they will bite the hand that feeds them.
Look at what happened after Katrina hit..and yes I am well aware many could not help theirselves but many just waited on someone else to do it for them as usual..failure ALL the way around..just saying there is no way I could picture people in this country coming together..it has been divided to long.

Lol why do you call me evil spirit? I'm sorry if I made it seem like this was a dem-repub battle. I know that is so far from the truth as there is only 1 party in Congress...the US Corporate Party with subparty A the Democrats and subparty B the Republicans. They are both evil and corrupt. They want a more conservative looking leader in office because they try to make their evil look good, so naturally I tend to bust the republicans more than the democrats but its fair game!

But I like to bust Bush's balls and this has all been esculated under Bush..aka Hitler. I wouldnt be surprised if Bush was the reincarnation of Hitler and the third anti-christ Mabus who was prophecised by Nostradamus.

This goes beyond freedom. This is a battle between good and evil!

Just an aaron russo fan im afraid :)

Evil spirit was actually a typo though i did notice it but thought it was funny so i left it.. it still makes me giggle a little.. haha

So true you are but... well.. I guess I can say I like to start any criticisms of dems by saying im a rep by voting history but i think that both the parties are messed up.. and need to be succeeded by some sort of third party that stresses LESS GOV is better gov.. or that I wished the dems picked ANYONE other than kerry because i REALLY didnt want to vote for dubya again but I had no choice :)

seriously.. like if they put up a TX dem last election.. prolly would have gotten my vote.. I dunno but i think we all win in the middle.. more than either of us win taking sides. I use to be an anarchist (not violent.. just in theory preference) but today I just say LESS gov.. a very little gov is very good.. Less ppl equal less corruption.. 1 in 7 ppl working for the gov is BS.. when it is more profitable to operate a country in CHINA?? BS..

The last remaining argument they have against us.. "America is -still- number one".

My response: how much longer do you think you can say that? why? what have you done to make america number 1? what are you willing to do??

(the new american motto) "... uhh its not my responsibility to make america number one.. it always will be.. i dont have to work.. i just collect welfare cuz america is number one.. i dont have to do anything.. its not MY responsibility"

The nice thing about Kerry is, you don't have to worry about him invading other countries because it helps his personal bottom line. Unless we start going to war over tomatoes and ketchup, his decisions would undoubtedly be more considered and impassionate than anyone's who has a stake in the oil business. And he's also been in combat situations. Anyone who's seen real combat, and smelled the rotting corpses of the dead (cleaning up corpses was my job for a week once), doesn't want to rush into combat if there are any alternatives.

Fake Terrorism and Federal Largess

Tim Dickinson writes on the National Affairs Daily blog over at Rolling Stone: ??New information has come to light on the curious timing of yesterday??s [July 7] leak of the Holland Tunnel/PATH Train terror plot, and credible intelligence sources are casting doubt on the seriousness of the threat?. Begging the question, ??Why did we just hear about this yesterday???, ABC??s blog, The Blotter reports that the alleged ringleader Assem Hammoud, a.k.a. Amir Andalousi, has been in captivity for nearly three months??

As noted here, Larisa Alexandrovna of Raw Story quoted ??former CIA spook Philip Giraldi? as stating Assem Hammoud and crew are not ??professionally trained terrorists? (in other words, they didn??t attend one of those ISI-CIA camps in Afghanistan or Pakistan) and ??had no resources with which to carry out the operation they discussed,? that is to say the threat was little more than hot air, although neocons and neocon wannabes are taking Alexandrovna to task on AlterNet??s forums, accusing her of sedition for simply reporting the story.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press reports this morning that Sen. Robert Menendez and Sen. Charles Schumer are using the hyped story of distant and untrained terrorists to ??offer legislative proposals to increase funding for mass transit security? in New York. ??The proposals would add $200 million to the $150 million already in the bill for subway and bus system security measures across the country; add $50 million for research and development of protective and warning systems; and add another $50 million to help local governments pay overtime to law enforcement agencies during terrorist threat-related emergencies.?

In short, the senators are exploiting the story to get more Ministry of Homeland Security largess for their district, thus demonstrating terrorism??or vastly overstated threats of terrorism, as the supposed perpetrator in the New York transit case was slapped in a Lebanese jail three months ago??may serve as a way to get cuts in the gravy train line.

Of course, with baseless and hyped terrorism stories making the rounds in the corporate media on a regular basis, ??terrorist threat-related emergencies? will become a regular and mundane occurrence, thus conditioning the public to accept more police state intrusions. Never mind the government is unable to apprehend real ??al-Qaeda? terrorists and instead depends on the FBI to entrap and frame patsies.

??One year and countless searches later, the practice [of random searches of New York subway commuters] once thought of as a temporary imposition with potential to trample civil rights remains firmly in place while barely causing a stir. The city??s top law enforcement official still insists the measure helps deter terrorism??and has no plans to halt it,? reports the Buffalo Daily News.

However, instead of evil ??al-Qaeda? miscreants, the cops in New York are bagging garden-variety petty crime malefactors. ??There have been five arrests for drugs, disorderly conduct and other minor charges??but none for terrorism,? apparently a track record worthy enough to excuse the trashing of the Fourth Amendment.

But never mind. If the Buffalo News has it right, most New Yorkers have no problem participating in the wholesale trashing of the Constitution. In fact, at least a few are eager to demonstrate their obedience to unreasonable search and seizure: ??At one checkpoint at the Wall Street subway stop last week, some commuters tried to voluntarily open their bags for the officers, who shooed them away. About every 10th person was stopped for searches that lasted perhaps 10 seconds?. If the chosen were bothered, it didn??t show.?

A certain Ben Franklin quote comes to mind in regard to the above, but it is a safe bet most New Yorkers, routinely subjected to cops rifling through their personal effects without suspicion or warrant, are unaware of this quote and instead, when Franklin??s name is mentioned, think of his electricity experiments or the Franklin stove.

I go into New York daily, I have never been stopped for a random check.

Altho the K-9 units have cruised by me apon many occasion.

If I were stopped for a search, I would be bothered and I'd ask why my rights were being violated.

But the simple truth of it is that most would rather just open there bag than to go thru the trouble of sticking up for themselves. It gets in the way of their busy busy day.

I commute to Manhattan on the subway every day, with a nylon briefcase on my shoulder, and have never been stopped once for a bag search. They hardly ever stop anyone, and I'm in the high-risk areas. I actually like the police dogs better, and I saw a few in Atlantic Avenue/Pacific Street (downtown Brooklyn) stations this evening. It's even better if the dogs are trained to sniff out bombs. There's a lot of suspicous people in that neighborhood, and many subway transfer points in that station, including the Long Island Railroad, so this makes more sense.

It may look ugly today but my money is on the chance that a decade or two from now most will agree that this war was in our best interests.. like korea.. but not really vietnam..
