Three people including a Coca-Cola Co. employee were arrested and charged Wednesday with stealing trade secrets from the world's largest soda maker and trying to sell the information to rival PepsiCo Inc. for more than $1.5 million.
Joya Williams, 41, an executive assistant at Atlanta-based Coca-Cola, allegedly took internal documents in May and later took a sample of a drink being developed and offered them both to PepsiCo in exchange for money, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney in Atlanta, David Nahmias.
PepsiCo contacted Coca-Cola in May, which then contacted the FBI to start an undercover investigation. Williams was later seen on a security tape stuffing papers and a glass bottle with a white label containing a product sample into her personal bag, the U.S. attorney's office said.
