Where is everyone? I know some people left and some new additions came by...show yourselves!!!!!!
I just got back from holiday in Kansas. I know Kansas isn't exacetly a swinging state, but it was more to visit family. So anyone who mailed me in the last week or so, give me a couple of days I'll get back to ya.
But now....back at the grind. I need to win the lottery.

Hey man. I'm still lurking in the shadows. Been too busy to get on the forum for the past week. Busy means more money, but less free time. All in all a good tradeoff.
Glad you made it back from Kansas safely. Enjoy your week.

Hope you had a good time, even with the visiting of family. ;)
Always a great time with my grandparents, it's all about a lot of love and a lot of laughter. I'm just so happy that I finally moved here and now they're only a drive away. Mind you, a very long and boring 8 hr drive....scenery doesn't change much from TX to OK to KS.

Yep, was born in Alabama and raised between Alabama and Kansas. Went to New Jersey as I started my second year in highschool and HATED IT. Don't get me wrong...I'll always love New York and I met some great people and a few lifelong friends. But having come from the South, it just wasn't the same 'welcoming' atmosphere I was used to.
But went to Red Bank Regional HS in Monmouth County and then to Farliegh Dickinson in Teaneck. My mother and brother live there still but I haven't been back to visit. They usually come this way to stay with my grandparents in Kansas so I just visit them there.

Hey, fellow Texans. I'm normally in Frisco, but we've been in Destin, Florida for the last week and will be here another week. All we've been doing is playing, swimming, and relaxing. My cancer-patient sister is with us and is having a great time, I'm pleased to say. I haven't been online as much as usual, but I'm sure I'll be back to my normal volume when we get home--at least until school starts in mid-August.

It was loooooooong and boring. Scenery just doesn't change much from here to Kansas. I was lucky enough to be buzzed on the way over. That made for a smooth drive.
The time with my grandparents and other kin was good as always. It's always about laughter and love on that side of the family. So we just kick back and lounge. It was the first time my wife had constant exposure to my mothers side of the family and it was good. She fits right in.
Drive back was looooooooooong. Ducked two Oklahoma state troopers...they like to sit behind and on entrance ramps out there, especially by some of those side entries to the farms. Picked up some fireworks outside Oklahoma City and had a nice chat with the guy running the stand.
Overall...alot of fun and much needed time away from the office.

The thermometer on my back porch reads 101 at the moment. I could do with about 30 fewer degrees. And a few days of rain.
Torog's been active on the main board and was talking in one of the politics threads just yesterday, so I'm hoping he's fine and well. He sounds like he is, at least!

Texas is normally such a friendly place, especially in the smaller places. Right now in Big D, what with the heat what it is and everything, we're having an unsually high level of road rage shootings and car-jackings. I hope it'll get better once things cool off.

Yeah, I think people in smaller towns just don't pay attention enough because there isn't much traffic to worry about. So they get kind of lazy about driving.
People in big cities like Dallas and Houston drive like bats out of hell because they are always in a rush. Driving here really is stressful. I was at the airport this morning.........sheeesh what a mess. Traffic was horrible. And the heat just makes everyone that much more frustrated.
Luckily now I'm back in my office with the A/C blowing cold and I've got a big glass of iced tea to sip on. If you've got to work, it might as well be comfortable, right?

Yeah, I have the biggest jerk in the world for a boss....I'm self-employed..:D
So I can pretty much do what I want. I am working long hours right now, and hopefully it will pay off for me. But I enjoy 90% of what I do. The other 10% is a tax write off.
I went to see You, Me, and Dupree today with a buddy over at the Studio Movie Grill in Plano. It was kind of funny, but the story got kind of tiresome after awhile. It would have been better as a 30 minute sitcom. The movie was kind of like Dupree......it overstayed it's welcome. But the audience laughed quite a bit, so I guess it hit it's mark.
Have a good weekend everyone.

Hey! You shouldn't talk mean about your boss. He happens to be one of the nicest people I know!
I love Owen Wilson and his brothers. He in particular just cracks me up. The Wilson boys' dad was briefly one of the VPs for the company I work for and I worked for him for about two years. Before that, he was the president of KERA, our local PBS affiliate. Nowadays he owns his own video production company. A neat guy, Robert Wilson. Owen, Andrew and Luke's mom, Laura, is a very accomplished portrait photographer who worked as Richard Avedon's assistant for a number of years. They're a very artsy family. The Wilson parents live in Dallas on the same street that Ross Perot's house is on.
My husband and son and I are probably going to go see "The Devil Wears Prada" tomorrow, maybe at the Studio Movie Grill in Plano.

Hey Birdgirl, I'm in Frisco too.
We went to Destin last year for a week. It was o.k. What did you think?
How is your sister? My close friend has inflammatory breast cancer (the worst/most deadliest kind of breast cancer). Does smoking help? My friend won't try it.

i dont think smoking weed is a cure for anything but bordom and stress
birdgirl73
07-24-2006, 09:44 PM
Hey, Patricia! Nice to hear from you and welcome to the boards!
I enjoyed Destin and liked the people we were there with, but we stayed for just under two weeks, and that was too much. After about a week of sun and sand, I was ready to do something else. And I got sick of the humidity. Other than go to the beach, there's not a lot to do there, is there?
When she was still feeling the effects of her last chemo and even afterwards for a bit, some light smoking really did seem to help my sister's appetite and anxiety and lessen her nausea, but she said she didn't think it helped enough to get any more after we ran out, and so she's doing without now. She's not eating a thing and will hardly drink fluids these days, and I worry about her, but she says she doesn't feel like smoking any more. I know the coughing was rough on her and didn't feel good on her insides, where the tumors are growing.
Too bad your friend with breast cancer won't at least try it, especially if she's having a lot of side-effects from chemo. We've found that the pain was easily controllable with meds but that the nausea was harder to deal with. I wish to goodness weed were more easily obtainable for folks in Texas who have real medical need. I really hate the whole shady, risky business of trying to find and buy the stuff.
Patricia
07-24-2006, 10:59 PM
wow and here I thought it was a cure for cancer goingcrack.
Birdgirl - thanks for the welcome. I had a bad experience in the past with the board which in retrospect was my fault. Anyway it's nice to meet other people from the Dallas area. I'm with you on the shady/risky side of obtaining smoke these days. I could tell you some funny/crazy stories from trying to hook up here in Dallas. Our house is on the market right now and I hope the next place is a little easier.
I'm sorry to hear about your sister. I'm glad her pain has been controllable with meds except for the nausea. My friend hasn't found anything to help with the pain that keeps her awake anyway. She just had another scan that showed all the chemo hasn't even helped and the tumor is spreading. She's in her mid 30s and has young kids. It's so sad.
Do you like living in Frisco? Sometimes I think it's all your state of mind but I've never met so many pretentious people in my life as in the DFW area but maybe I've just been hanging around the wrong people.
birdgirl73
07-24-2006, 11:30 PM
Hey again. After I said "Welcome," I looked at your join date and it said a year ago, so you're not really new to the boards. But welcome anyway since you're new to me!
That is sad about your friend and the fact that her cancer is spreading. Same with my sister's disease. She's a little older--50--and is divorced and didn't ever have kids when she was married. Her cancer docs believe she probably wasn't helped by the fact that she took several rounds of fertility drugs 14 or so years ago when she was married and was trying to get pregnant. Apparently those drugs that put women's ovaries into production overdrive so they can conceive more easily have been associated with a higher risk of cancer later on. I worry because my little sister is currently trying to get pregnant and is taking her first round of those drugs now. She'll need to be followed real closely from now on.
I like Frisco pretty well, but I know what you mean about this area being pretentious. I think Dallas in particular is a very materialistic city and that there's a lot of keeping up with the Joneses that goes on here in regards to possessions. I mean, look at all the tract mansions and expensive cars and such. I suppose I shouldn't talk. I live in a big house myself in a gated community. But I think experiencing a loved one's illness puts things into perspective real fast. It's not stuff that matters. It's family and friends and quality time together. Oh! And pets. . . .
Do you have kids? You said your house is on the market. Are you looking to leave this area? What sort of work do you do? Don't answer anything you don't want to, of course.
We've got one son, who's 20. He's home for the summer from college. I work as a speechwriter for a big company, but this is my last week at that. In mid-August, I'm going to be starting medical school, which is something I've always wanted to do. My husband practices cardiology, and I've been a frustrated doctor for all these years, too. So I'm finally going to make that happen. It's scary, and this isn't exactly the best time for me to be heading off to school full time with my sister getting sicker by the day, but she insists that I must do this now, and so I'm going to. There's no guarantee that I'd get accepted again next year if I tried to defer my admittance, and so I'm going to go while the door's open!
Patricia
07-25-2006, 12:13 AM
You go girl! That's so awesome about medical school!! I live in a gated community in Frisco too ... this is getting a little too close and personal ha ha! We are probably neighbors! And yes Dallas is every bit what you said about materialistic and keeping up with the Joneses I really hate that. I've got a young daughter and my husband runs his own business. We should chat off line but I don't want to post my email for everyone to see. Any ideas?

Let me think about this for a moment. I don't belong to the cafe. If you do a search on some of my earliest posts, you can probably find my email address in some of those. I hate to post it here again because I get emails I don't want when that happens! If you can't easily find it, we'll think of something else. . . .
