wow!
it's the fourth of july the time where we all celebrate this great nation by buying chinese made fireworks from the indians!
but did they have to launch another pollution causing space shuttle too?
(there goes the ozone!)
when the last one blew up it spread pollution all over!
and all that pomp and circumstance
Yechh!
"good luck and GODSPEED"
What the F*%& does he mean by that?
what does luck and GODSPEED have to do with anything?
does he read the bible and gamble or something?
I don't get it. can someone please explain that expession to me?

Since when was a space launch exciting? :p
This is what Godspeed means.
God·speed (gŏd'spēd')
n.
Success or good fortune.
[From Middle English God spede (you), may God prosper (you) : God, god; see god + spede, third person sing. present subjunctive of speden, to prosper (from Old English spēdan, from spēd, success; see speed).]
Google. :)

so I get it,
he said GODSPEED instead of saying "GOD BLESS"
He probably did it that way to sound cooler....
I thought that we had seperation of church and state!

Ha ha! That's a good one.
You see how it works is, when religion and politics cross paths, it no longer makes things immoral...as you can plainly see. :p

I thought it was pretty sweet. Maybe you actually had to be here and saw the real thing to enjoy :D We nabbed passes to the launch in Aug. We get to go behind the roadblock to get good pics
Ohh, and NASA is funded by the gov't. Not really a branch so to speak (at least I'm pretty sure). They can say godspeed if they want. What would you expect them to say.."don't blow up!"?

So would you rather we just stopped space exploration because the shuttle spews out some pollution? Believe me, the amount of driving the average american does over the course of a year in their gas guzzling SUVputs out jusy as much pollution as the shuttle. There are plenty of better reasons to get rid of the shuttle (its a deth trap for one), but pollution isn't one of them.
As for godspeed, its the same as saying good luck. Just because we have a seperationof church and state (supposedly, certain adminisatrations seem to think otherwise), doesn't mean someone working for the gov't cannot say "godspeed", "god bless" etc.
I'd rather have a boring launch than an "exciting" one were people are killed.

The only exciting thing about a space shuttle launch is the morbid curiosity/fear of it exploding and blowing to pieces.

Agreed. If you want to complain about pollution, complain about all the suburbans, denalis, escalades driving around spewing smog and drinking all the gasoline up. Most these these morons buy these vehicles for a statement rather then really needing a bigger vehicle.

just for your information the smoke you see coming out the back of the shuttle is not polution its actually water molecules created when the chemicals used for fuel are added together those chemicals being hydrogen and oxygen which create h2o which is very clean fuel
also when a rocket goes thru the ozone it dosent rip it open it pushes tru it then it closes again

oh really?
The quantities produced each Shuttle launch are significant, and include a total of 56,000 kg of aluminum oxide and 35,200 kg of hydrogen chloride, and 76,800 kg of carbon dioxide. There is a significant acid deposition near the launch pad that is closely monitored and tracked. The aluminum oxide dust particles form nuclei with water vapor, and results in rain. The rain then absorbs some of the HCl to produce acid rain.
