View Full Version : My Band

I was wondering if anybody here knows of any modern bands that sound like mine. Our sound can probably best be described as a mix of The Zombies, The Beatles, Coldplay, Elton John, Donovan, CSN&Y, The Byrds and some psychedelic touches ala Jefferson Airplane and Hendrix, with a little bit of Jimiesque guitar work thrown in (but not that much).

I can??t really find any modern bands that are piano/keyboard based with 60s influences and lots of orchestration (strings, horns, sitars, organs harpsichords). I know of the Brain Jonestown Massacre, The High Dials and the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (or whatever the hell there called) but there more psychedelic and spaced out. I write very pop friendly 3:30 songs so were not some bullshit progressive jam-rock deal.

Are there any bands out there though that sound like the 1967 Beatles with some updated sounds along the lines of Coldplay? We just started to line up gigs and so far have pretty much been invited to any place we want to play but will people my age (college/high school) actually dig the music?

I am the lead singer/songwriter, and want the music to be marketable.

It sounds like you have a really interesting sound, I'd be interested in hearing them.. you should post a song or two in the multimedia section.

I will post a demo song or two after I get the copyright(s), which should be in a few weeks. I will post in this thread when I do.

Bongman,
I am gonna check those out, thanks.

This is exactly our sound if I got away from standard pop-rock a little more (I think I write better songs though). Their a little more psychedelic and experimental, and since I want to be a professional musician I guess we'll have to sound a little more like Coldplay for the first few years.

I downloaded a song or two but now I am going to buy some of their albums, since I actually want to support them. How much success has Beulah had, they sound great.

Just try writing more songs. Right now I spend about four hours a day in the studio, not recording, just working on chords progressions and melodies. I then take about two more hours to practice with the band.

I also study other bands songwriting, chord progression(s), lyrics and rhythms. For instance I am looking into alot of hip-hop and dance right now( I am trying to make some danceable songs) even though my influences have nothing to do with those styles, I just want to stay up to date. Its also funny to see how much bands steal from each other, the Coldplay song "Clocks", for example, has the exact same chord progression as Daniel Powter's "Bad Day". And Coldplay??s "Speed of Sound" is just ??Clocks? in a different key.

Western music is simple to write. Yet so few people really try to get into it. Shit just gets easier as you go.

Oh man I'm glad you like it. Beulah broke up a couple years ago unfortunately, they're one of the bands I badly wanted to see live. They haven't had much 'popular' success, but for music lovers, they are highly admired.

A couple more to check out from the same label: Neutral Milk Hotel, which is literally the heart and soul of this label. In An Aeroplane Over The Sea is the best album of the 90s. Period. It's like accoustic psychedelia, but even that's an understatement. It's a stand alone album. Also Elf Power. Their first two albums, "When The Red King Comes" and "Dream In Sound" are just fantastic listens.

However, you claim you write better! I definitely have to check your music out!!!!!! Too intriguing :)

thats cool,

You should look into getting Cakewalk for your PC, it??s a great recording program. It will help you guys really see how you sound. Since you listen over and over you can get all the little things corrected that you would normally miss.

BTW, copywriting is so fucking expensive. I am getting it done this week and its like $30 a song if you do it individually. I think mine might be done as a collection to bring it down a little.

I still use good old reliable Cool Edit Pro for my studio...
Oh yeah, I still blow the dust off my old Yamaha 4 track Metal cassette tape deck for a retro sound.

reply: justin timberlake would be bubblegum music...IMO.

Isn't it a good idea to start your career with something someone would buy? then after you got'em by the "Balls"...You write from your "Heart"
the beatles were a "POP" band you know, as was let's say, Matchbox 20. peace

Hey, I am wondering what the process is to copyright a song?

My friends and bro are in a band, and I would think they would eventually want to copyright their music.
