View Full Version : Decision time: CFL or HPS?

I'll try to make this short and simple.... I've tossed around several ideas on what size cabinet to make. Wieghing all the options I'm going to stick with my orginal design of two "speaker stands". Each stand will be 2'x2'4'tall. By dividing the inside of one stand by half, creating two chambers, I can use one for mothers and the other for seedlings and breeding program.

The other stand is the one I'm undecided about which way to go with lighting. I've followed various links from here and google to companies that sell cfls rated all the way up to 400w (using 105w). Or I could go with a small 150w hps. I've seen folks using both, and it's obvious that the hps will achieve both a higher quality bud, and what we all most want, higher total yields!

I have to admit, I am leaning towards the hps. But I have a few issues to resolve first. Ventilation and tempurature control being one of them. For design purposes I MUST use muffin fans. I know some will gripe about this, claiming they don't provide enough cfms to work properly, but I have researched this and found some rating from 80cfm to 120cfm. What I need to varifed is how to wire them in series. If I'm not mistaken an old OG faq said something about adding the combined amps together, and looking for a transformer rated 20% above that.

The rest of my questions pertain directly towards the hps it's self. I have seen how-to's on how to wire them and make a remote balast. I will continue researching this, but if someone has a link to a well writen with picture/diagrams, I'd really apperciate that too!

Mounting the hps would be next question. I've worked with 250's and 400's before and I *KNOW* how hot they can get!!! I'd be mounting this permently towards the top of the cabinet, but I don't want it so high up that I burn the inside of the box! What is a good distance to be safe and prevent a fire? Note: I do have some scrap aluminium sheet metal, enough so that I could cover the top inside of the box.

Thanks,

Jaxxx
