Looking for some input on my outside closet. The closet is 4' x 8' and I am debating between one 1000w with a linear track mover or two lights - 400w and a 600w which I already have. My buddy refuses to use anything under 1000w on his grows and tells me I will get a better yield with one 1Kw bulb versus two. Any input would be appreciated.

stick with the 2 ballasts, you will get more light coverage..It's like having those 2 equal to 1000 anyways, but with more area coverage, and less heat problems.

I think that if you have proper ventilation/air movement, the 600 and the 400 might be the way to go, but first a few things to consider. Are you trying to use two separate lights in order to get a fuller spectrum, MH and HPH combined? Because if not, and you are just going to use HPS with the 400 and the 600 then a 1000w hps may be sufficient, unless your going to try some side lighting, and even then you have to think about positioning of the lights and you would have to probably need to do allot of plant rotation. Also, with things heating up in there, the advantage to a 1000w is that you could get an air cooled hood which would be easier than trying to air cool two lights in such a small area.
These are just some things to consider. Hope fully someone will confirm or unconfirmed my thoughts and shine more light on the question of your lighting question.

i would go with the 1000 and the light mover.you will be able to maintain a closer distance from your canopy level to your light and not have to deal with two lights.

Well, in a 4x8 space you could use all three. I would use 2000 Watts in that space if it is all used for flowering. It would be more then needed (600-400 more then I think is needed) but, it will optimize the situation. On one side use the lights you have and on the other, throw in the 1000HPS. It will be a great experiment to see which 4x4 square yields the most/best. Use one oversized fan to cool them both in series and you are a scrog and 3 months from way more then one man could ever need.
The best lights i have are dual spectrum 600hps/400mh air cooled hoods and i have used 2 over a space exactly the same as this.
