my friend is doing a grow with 30w and 85w cfl's...they are on 18-6..he wakes up and his 85w is off...is this due to overheating?...
Well i doubt it. The idea of CFL's are so they can be kept on for VERY long periods of time without over-heating and blowing like normal bulbs.
It should be cool to the touch.
It might be the socket he's using, or it might be a dodgy bulb, but i highly highly highly doubt its overheating. [Well, put it this way. If it was over heating that much he'd have no plants left.]

If it is a photo sensing security light you are using, you might check the electrical tape or whatever it is you put over the photocell eye. If that eye sees light it thinks dawn is here and turns the light off.

First thing I would do is stick the 35 watter in the socket that the 85w CFL was in. That way youll be able to find out whether its the bulb or the socket thats faulty... although if its the socket, you may end up buggering up the 35w bulb aswell.

Well I'd just try replacing the fixture, my bulbs bases don't stay that warm

yea mine dont either, ofcoarse i have a fan blowing on them.
Actually, my bulbs are pretty hot to the touch but they dont project the heat. So if you put your finger 1 cm away from it, it wont be hot at all.
