ok so i was doing some brainwashing the other day and i thought of this...
Can the plant pollenate itself?
If so, then you can take your male plants and stress the shit out of them to make them turn hermie... and then you can have a shitload of seeds instead of just tossin it...
Thoughts?

Go to any of the 'feminized seeds' threads for an explanation.
It's going to be a bitch to get enough female flowers on a male plant to use it for seed production.
It's all too easy to end up with male flowers in a female bud.
And voila! The plant pollinates itself. Snap crackle pop.
So I think the answer to your question, can you use your males for seed production, is that it's not really practical.

not practical.... agreed.
But if you were, to say, growing just 1 plant and it turns out to be male, you might as well do as suggested...yes?

????..a female plant..if you stress it will turn out hermie...a Male plant you stress it..you get a pissed off male plant...you can't turn a male plant it into a hermie....only a female...

With dioecious plants hermaphroditism can go in both directions.

I have never heard of a plant producing male flowers first.. and then later producing female pistils.. I always hear about it happening the other way around...
This may very well be do to the fact that people always throw their males out at first sign of MALE FLOWERS..
interesting.. hmmmmmmmm?

It happened to me once last year. I had separated this particular male out of my garden and it was sitting in the dining room until I had a chance to ditch it somewhere, and when I finally got around to toting the thing out to the compost heap 4 days later there were female sex parts showing distinctly.
I'd like to hear from a breeder who keeps males around to find out how common this is.

Yes, this is possible. Sometimes on purpose.

Dude don't worry about all this.
Just grow some bud first.
And read about breeding because it isn't that hard to make seeds while you grow great pot.
Please Read up.

Opie, under what circumstances would it be preferable to hermie a male rather than hermie a female?
I am going to guess that we are on the brink of some really technical breeding stuff...

I don't know a lot about this because at this point I really don't care. I'm just not into it. Sorry I can't help more. Too technical.

really not technical...
I was just asking that:
Say a person grows one plant, and unfortunately it turns out to be male. So at weeks 2 of flower, this frustrated person has 2 choices, 1. Kill it and waste all the money you spend on electricity, or, 2. Stress the plant by cutting some leaves and messing with the light cycles for a couple weeks and making it turn hermie. Then maybe this plant will pollinate its self and [this person] can atleast get like 50-75 seeds.
Eh?

That's why if you're growing from seed you should always grow multiple plants.
If you're worried about spending the $ on electricity- how much is it going to cost to get those seeds?
And to get 75 seeds off a MALE plant- well, the last time you saw a female turn hermi, how many male sex parts showed up? Relatively few.
Each female calyx can only grow one seed. See where this is going?

Aha... i see now...
I figured a male plant would grow fair-sized buds if it turned hermie.
thanks
