QUESTION: I am suspicious that my 16-year-old son may be using some kind of illegal drugs. He's just not himself lately, and his friends are some of the weirdest guys you ever saw. Can you summarize the most common symptoms of drug abuse? What should I look for?
DR. DOBSON: A complete answer to that question would fill a book, because there are so many illegal substances on the market today and each has its own characteristic "fingerprint." But there are eight common physical and emotional symptoms you might look for in your son.
1. Inflammation of the eyelids and nose is common. The pupils of the eyes are either very wide or very small, depending on the kind of drugs taken.
2. Extremes of energy may be evident. Either the individual is sluggish, gloomy and withdrawn, or he may be loud, hysterical and jumpy.
3. The appetite is extreme -- either very great or very poor. Weight loss may occur.
4. The personality suddenly changes; the individual may become irritable, inattentive and confused, or aggressive, suspicious and explosive.
5. Body and breath odour are often bad. Cleanliness is generally ignored.
6. The digestive system may be upset -- diarrhea, nausea and vomiting may occur. Headaches and double vision are also common.
Other signs of physical deterioration may include change in skin tone and body stance.
7. Needle marks on the body, usually appearing on the arms, are an important symptom.
These punctures sometimes get infected and appear as sores and boils.
8. Moral values often crumble and are replaced by new, avant-garde ideas and values.
Let me caution you that some kids are able to hide their drug use better than others. You might stop by to see the officer in charge of narcotics enforcement for your local police department. He or she may be able to give you more specific information applicable to your son.
QUESTION: What about snooping through my son's room to see what he might be doing? Do you think parents should do that?
DR. DOBSON: There are definitely times when mothers and fathers need to conduct their own quiet investigation, even though it might invade the privacy of the teenager.
This issue was discussed widely in the media some years ago when comedian Carol Burnett discovered her teenage daughter was a drug user. When the problem finally came to light, Carol was regretful that she hadn't taken steps to inform herself of what was going on. She appeared on many talk shows to say, in effect, that kids desperately need their parents to "catch them" in a moment like that.
Don't let your respect for their privacy cause you to stick your head in the sand and fail to notice what is going on right in front of you.
In situations where a secretive boy or girl is doing suspicious things, I would gather whatever information I needed in order to know how to respond.

Oh man DR. DOBSON is really talking bullshit!!! These kind of things appear in American newspapers:eek:
Some things are true for more than half of the human population or are just too obvious: "Needle marks on the body, usually appearing on the arms, are an important symptom." :smirk:
8. Moral values often crumble and are replaced by new, avant-garde ideas and values.
Means: Anyone who thinks different than me is a drug addict... : confused:
Exactly, its bull. Half that stuff isnt true... What has taking drugs got to do with being clean?

Yeah, I mean when I first started smoking marijuana, I just sat there in my underwear without shaving or showering for months on end, eating pure butter and shoving needles into my arms. I also would throw up every few minutes. Every time that my parents came in to talk to me, I would throw the nearest blunt object at them and yell feebly through the butter in my mouth.
Clearly this guy knows what he's talking about.. I'm.. *gasp* a REEFER ADDICT!

Uh oh, I think I'm doing my drugs wrong!
1. Inflammation of the eyelids and nose is common. The pupils of the eyes are either very wide or very small, depending on the kind of drugs taken.
My eyes get red, but only during the high so far as I've seen.
2. Extremes of energy may be evident. Either the individual is sluggish, gloomy and withdrawn, or he may be loud, hysterical and jumpy.
hmmmm, only mood change I get from frequent pot use is a generally more possitive attitude. Also, when I'm high I feel extremely inclined to excercise, go for nature walks/hikes, and feel that I can undoubtedly accomplish my life goals. I smoked huge amounts of hash every night before my college exams and I aced them all.
3. The appetite is extreme -- either very great or very poor. Weight loss may occur.
I get the munchies immediately after smoking, if that's what they mean. My weight is perfect and I've lately had more success with my strength training than ever.
4. The personality suddenly changes; the individual may become irritable, inattentive and confused, or aggressive, suspicious and explosive.
I've been smoking my ounce 3 times a day for the past month, and I gotta say I'm feeling very mellow and happy. does that count?
5. Body and breath odour are often bad. Cleanliness is generally ignored.
sure as hell not in my case. and I just got out of the shower.
6. The digestive system may be upset -- diarrhea, nausea and vomiting may occur. Headaches and double vision are also common.
Other signs of physical deterioration may include change in skin tone and body stance.
digestion is perfect for me right now, though it was awfull and I saw many specialists when I was a teenager, extremely stressed out, and I was mr. anti-pot.
7. Needle marks on the body, usually appearing on the arms, are an important symptom.
ah! I thought I was supposed to smoke my weed, but I guess I should be shooting it. thanks :)
8. Moral values often crumble and are replaced by new, avant-garde ideas and values.
and that's why weed is so wonderfull, it makes you question everything, including your values. I thank it for helping me abandoning my christian ideals, and the belief in god, and converting to buddhism which proved to be much more beneficial for me. Weed helped me find myself. But then children who question established values are bound for hellfire!

HAHA good stuff.
i think that based on these reponses to this assholes philosophy, all of us completely disagree and know that all of that is untrue. Now we just need the government to actually repsect us "users" as human beings and not just look down on us saying,"Oh, what do THEY know, THEY'RE just a bunch of potheads."
I will say tho, that this guy is saying all these symptoms come from "drug use"... he never claims anything about smoking cannabis. Weightloss, aggressiveness, Loss of hygiene, etc... ALL come with addictions to cocaine, heroine, crack, etc. So maybe we should listen, because imo, it would be a shame to find out your childs addiction to something hard like that AFTER they are deeply addicted.

What does the government have to do with any of that?
In their defense, I think this forum is way too quick to blame the government for every problem with the plant. The Majority of the world is unforunately against Marijuana. The government is simply out to regulate society, and majority rules. They are not going to appeal to the minority of us who are smoking pot. If they did, then we have the majority of the world who will get pissed. Once society finally realizes how harmless the plant is, then things will start making changes.

Personally, I think some of the responding posters are either young and nieve or old and blind. First off, I did not see them focus these statements just on cannibas use. being a recovering coke addict from a young age, I have to say most of those things are true to a certain extent. Having two teenage kids I often get stuck in the quandry of whether I should invade my childrens privacy or look into things further.
Even with cannibas, most adults know why they smoke pot and how to do so responsibly, but young children are ignorant to things in life and do not usually realize the implications of their actions. If my son smoked I would not allow him to until he was an adult and of his own responsibility. To many things are at risk for parents when their kids are growing or selling. I don't need to lose my house and belongings because my son wanted to be a cultivator.
Now, I know I started smoking pot at 14 and have for the past 20 years. I have basically done every drug during my time except for X. This does not mean that I should understand if my child goes through the same ills that I went through. We as parents are here to take what we learned in life and try to guide our children down the correct paths in life and have them make their own informative decisions. This is the essence of parenting, IMHO. Try to teach your kids the mistake you made and helpt them learn how they can avoid those mistakes.
now, back to the subject of the thread.....everything that the post stated was somewhat true. When your addicted to heroin or coke, you don't really care about your hygiene. I have spent 3 days in a basement smoking rock. Think I cared that I had bad armpit odor!?! When you use various drugs your pupils do dialate and with some drugs your eyes and nose DO get red or inflammed. Differences in social behavior are most certainly associated with the pubescent years, but if other signs such as red eyes are also prvelant along with changes in mood or social behavior then that could be a flag. Any responsible parent should be looking for these signs.
I constantly look at my son for any suspicious behavior. I remeber what I was like at his age and I worry sometimes. I have always communicated about anything with my son I feel rather comfortable that he wouldn't use drugs, but peer and sociatel pressure are SOOO strong that you can never be sure.
So, instead of just writing off this person who wrote this, maybe you should try and look at it from a non-biased perspective and maybe then you will see that even if he is not a credible person or just a whack.....he makes valid points. If you don't have children or have ever been involeved in a serious addiction then maybe you will not relate, but tale it from a person who has.....its relevant.

The majority of the world is anti-cannabis because of usa demand. When we fought the japanese part of the surrender was they would give up the use of cannabis hemp and use synthetics. We re-wrote their constitution.
Cannabis has been a vital role in most of the world until usa interference.
A good book with accurate references would be Ernest, Abel; Marijuana, the first 12,000 years. Many European countries, like Portugal, The Netherlands, etc etc pretty much ignore usa demands.

You get right on that and let us know!
I think it's better that pot is illegal. If pot was legalized, the whole world would lose money. We'd get a shitload of immigrants all of a sudden, and it wouldn't be hard to figure out why. Too bad the world can't unite as one major entity... picture it... a world where everybody is together... there is no racial difference anymore, it doesn't matter... the human race is so divided... split apart... instead of fighting with eachother, we should be helping and lifting our fellow man... think of how much potential the world would have... the greatest minds from every part of the world uniting for one purpose... to further our existance... I believe that our current era is only a blimish on our timeline... I do believe things will get better... the human race will shine one day.
That belongs on like, a monument or something.
Well said.
