I called my local garden centre to get a price for a digtal PH tester. Their cheapest one was $89, can you get any other digtal tester that isn't so $$$ and still good quality?

Well if you only buy a Ph meter how are you going to monitor the PPM then. That takes another meter. You can buy a 4 in 1 that does PPM, Ph, temperature, & EC all in one meter from Hanna. They cost about 150.00 or so and you can find them at most grow shops.
It's an important tool and if you are going to spend the money you should get a good one.
Don't forget the calibration solution too for TDS & PH.

Zandor is there any threads that go over the details of Ph'ing? I know nothing about it. So whats this about the ppm? I need to know what I need to make sure my plants are at the right PH level and temp.? I fixed all the light leaks I had and no store around me has ph testers that include ph up and ph down so I was gonna order it off the net. I need step by step instructions on ph'ing.

Ph, the first thing you should know is.
It sucks to play the Ph up & down game so only add very small amounts at a time. Then mix it up and check the level.
You can always add more drops at a time if you need to but it's a bitch to switch from up to down and get it to balance. Start with just a few drops at a time until you get the feel for how much buffer you have in the nutrients you use. It will not talk very long to get the handle of it and figure out Ph-ing.
Small steps at a time to start with.

I read that thread and I didnt understand it and I dont think I read anything about PH.
do I also need a Ph/ppm meter that tells me the ph level of the soil right? So do I test the soil, then my nuted water, adjust the water to either raise or lower the ph to get my desired PH level when I combine the two?

PH - how much acid or alkiline is your nutes
PPM - parts per million of disolved solids.
two different things. both should be considered.

Oh, I see you are growing in soil. That sucks.
You will need a soil PH tester and a liquid PH tester. I would forget about the PPM for now unless you see problems. Not as important in soil.
