my first time growing I have 4 mama plants I hope, that Im taking clones from.the mama plants are about 12-24 inches in height and are producing
nice clones. SO when can I start flowering the clones and how do I know when their ready to be flowered. I will be using 400 watt HPS for the flowering
area. any expert advice???:) :)

Hi HAIR boy...
The determining factor, when considering plant size, is
HOW much light (lumens)
How many plants (quanity)
SOME STANDARD EXAMPLES
You can flower 9-16 plants nicely in 1-5 galon containers using a 400-1000 watt HPS liight
If you are growing 16 plants (1 gallon containers) you should flower when the plants are 6-10 inces tall with 4-6 nodes.
If you are growing 9 plants in 3 gallon containers you should flower when the plants are 10-14 inches tall 6-8 nodes.
If you are going to continue to clone you may consider cloning your plants when they are at the desired height.. lets say 10 inches.. clone it down to 6 inches.(topping the plant)
...and then let it grow for 5 days
...and then FLOWER..

thanks you much for the help. I think I tried to flower the first set of clones
to early, and they did not have root system yet. My next question is does the clone have to have roots before putting into flowering, Im sure they but I dont know for sure>

you coulds "flowre" them before they have roots.. menaing, you could set the lighting period to 12/12 befroe they have roots..
but what would be the purpose...? What are your intentions? I am curious.. : )
To shorten the budding period?
This will not shorten the budding period/plants life cycles (plants life from begining to HARVEST) and may actually prolong the process ...
and will definitley reduce YIELD..

My purpose is to find out the gender. what im going to try is Ive put the clones
under flourecent 18 hour light for veg growth til they are strong enough to handle 400 watt HPS. Otherwise they just shrivle up.

Knowm,,,,, If I may????
Hairboy! You should put them through the vegitation cycle first! After they have established roots, cuttings I assume? Which should be around 10 days if given the care they should get! No less than 18 hours of light,24 hours of flourescent light could save ya a bit on electricity,as well as give the clones a better chance to take off! Once you have established a root system on all the cuttings.Veg them till they are about 10-12 inches in height.Turn the light's back to 12-12,and go from there! You should be able to have them sexed,in 1-2 weeks! You can do this with the flo light, too! If you got the room, and they are not in a box and such!I've just never tried to sex or flower anything that has no roots!Hope it put cha on the right track!

How close is the light? And,do you use a fan to vent the hood, not the room? Cause sounds to me it's awfully HOT in there!

Why would you even bother to clone anything unless you positively knew it was female. Cloning before then sounds like an excercise in futility.

hi hairboy...
I personaly have no problem cloning a plant when i do not know its sex... I always chose the path for the quickest yield, not the path of least amount of work.. (always mark your plants so, that you know where the clones come from)
so, if i were you i would just grow your clones into nice plants(vegging), clone them, flower them and then throw out all the males.. including the NEW male clones (you better mark all your cuttings)... this may be a little extra work but it sure beats flowering a plant and then switching it back to its veggetative cycle..

So what your saying is grow a few plants, take sum cuttings and mark them, and root them, veg them and then flower. If I get any males, that means the mother which is actually a male can be killed. I think that is wiser than flowering sum, finding out they are females, throw them back into veg. stage, then take cutting. Right?

First, don't clone anything unless you know it is female, or plan on later possibly having to just toss the plants.
Second, flowering merely means you change your light schedule from roughly 18/6 to roughly 12/12. If your plants will still flower fine with 13/11 then do that (more light = more weed). You can look up flowering light times on the internet. Also when most people flower, they use different nutrients.
Third, yes you can skip the vegitative stage all together, but it would be much better to go to 12/12 after the plant has roots. It will take too long to root otherwise, and chances are the plants won't be quite as healthy overall for several reasons. Many people veg just until the plants have a couple inches of roots with a fluor (8-10 days in a cloner), then go immediatly to a HPS light and bloom. The vast majority however, give their plants some veg time after rooting (at least 2 weeks, but more like 4 to 8) because it will yield much more weed this way. Longer veg = more plant material = more weed when flowered. Of course longer veg also equals less harvests per year. There are pros and cons to both methods.
Say "less harvests" 3 times fast. Get stoned first though.

Oh yeah, this is probably well known by most, but you can also veg a plant forever, making 1 plant take up the space of a warehouse, if you so desire.
Imagine the yield.
