Hi,

I was just thinking about what would be the cheapest option to make a cooled hood and suddenly I found a thread on an aquaristic forum about making home made light system. There was a guy who expressed his idea about a cheap hood made from gutter. Almost any gutter is perforated on the sides so you can easily adapt the glass to the bottom and it's perform perform as a reflector(ok, not a bat wing performance:)) cause its reflective material(some kind of aluminium). The Ends are closed so you can make a "fixture" with a little work. What do think?

Most gutters I know of are only 4" wide that would make the light very small. What about building a cool tube using Bake-A-Rounds? There are a few threads and even an FAQ on that subject.

Do you mean area coverage would be small?

I think they're equal in size. Bake a rounds are nice but the shipping(20-30) make them expensive.

But is it deep enough to hold the bulb, glass and still have room for proper air flow all around the bulb?

The focal area yes it would be smaller.
