i personally would never attempt to use that big of a light in a small cabinet... but if you really want to, make sure you have atleast 2 exhaust fans and a deskfan blowing on your whole setup.
I would just use CFLs in a small enclosure, that last thing you need is the fire department finding your grow. =D

I currently have a 250w HPS in a closet space around 8 feet high, 3 feet wide, and 2 feet long. If I keep the door closed the temperature quickly rises above 100F. I recently added an exhaust fan and now the temperaure hovers around 82F with the door closed.

looking back on my post i cant really remeber why i said that. i think i may have assumed you has a smaller space, probably because i was stoned. But even reading your post now, i will still say that I, personally, wouldnt put a huge hot bulb and put it inside of an enclosed cabinet and have it on all day while i wasn't home.
Unless i had a house to myself and i could openly ventilate without alerting anyone. I use an 8in desk fan AND a 3 inch CPU fan (intake) to keep my temps just under 85 degrees with the door closed... and i use CFLs!
Just giving my 2 cents.

I have a 600 watt in a closet that size, except it's about 2 1/2 meters tall. Of course you need a cool tube or enclosed hood for this, with a good fan (250 cfm, I think). If I can do this you certainly can do 250 watts. Don't ever try HID without ventalation though. Your plants will fry.

You could, but its the heat issue. All you gotta do is find a way to get rid of the heat. Have a fan blowing right up at it.

Chisme, if you look at my grows youll see how big my closet is and Im using a 250w HPS aswell. Temps are never a problem as long as the windows always open and fresh air is moving around the room.

A 250 watt bulb has almost identical heat issues as a 400 watt bulb..

IN general, it is not worth using HPS bulbs that are under 400watts.

and NOW you KNOWM

What? Really? That's weird. Why?

im actually thinking of getting rid of the hps

Are you crazy? Why not get rid of your crapy ventaltion system instead. Go on ahead I guess, if you want to get half as much weed.

Get a fan and open the closet door like Lip said point the
fan at the light maybe from the back towards the open door
so it blows the heat out. I never grew in that small of a space.
Id get a thermometer too so you can keep tabs on the heat
index in the grow space.

HPS lamps really have a low heat output compared to the lumens they radiate. My grow space is a little small bitch in a plastic cabinet. 250 watt for an area that's roughly 4x3x2.5 stays below 85 as long as I've got a fan blowing in there. Also, be reminded that the best bud in the world comes from around the equator, where the sun is most intense. not only will hps lights give the plants sort of a 'tan,' but they'll cook out a lot of humidity which will allow the leaves to become narrow and glossy (they don't need as much surface area to intake air and expel poisons since the air is lighter and circulating.) The gloss comes because you've convinced the plant it's a dry climate and it needs to produce those oils to avoid drying out. Final products will reveal that the narrow glossy leaves have more resin percentage than the broader leaves. thanx for your time
