There once was an island called booga inhabited by a tribe of people called boogans. For many years, the boogans lived in happiness and peace with the other islands. All of the other islands imitated boogan customs. They fashioned loinclothes after them, began to eat their food and even talk in their language. Booga experienced peace for so long that they began to act arrogant and think their island was invincible. The boogans began to argue with each other and even split into two rival groups. A few of the other islands began to resent the boogans and refused to travel to their island or exchange goods with them. Many islands even claimed to hate the boogans because they talked to different spirits than them.
One day, some villagers from another island, ranga, snuck over and burned down one of the largest huts, killing many villagers. The boogans chief, dooba, ordered the warriors to travel to the ranga to capture the warriors who had burned down their hut. Most of the boogans were very happy to see that their leader was brave enough to defend their island. The boogans put their differences aside and banded together during this hard time. For many days the warriors searched for the villagers behind the attack.
Then one day, dooba ordered half of the warriors to another island, kari, to search for their leader madas. Dooba told his people that the kari's leader was rumored to be preparing to attack booga, and that the boogan elders would prove this. Time passed and many boogan warriors died looking for madas. Madas was very mean to his people, and the villagers in kari hated madas and were very happy when he was caught. But the villagers in kari wanted the boogans to leave now that their leader was gone.
In time, it became clear to the boogans that madas was not planning to burn down more of boogan huts. Soon the boogans began wondering why their warriors had been sent to kari. Dooba told his people that the villagers in kari could now live like boogans, even though many of them didn't want to. The boogans became angry at dooba and some demanded that a new chief lead the island. But dooba's father had been the chief before him, as was sometimes the custom (although dooba's father was loved more than dooba) and more of the villagers wanted him to lead the boogans than those who demanded a new chief.
During this time, the warriors continued looking in ranga for the attackers. They often returned home for a few nights, only to be sent back to ranga. They felt as though the other warriors in kari were more important than them. Many of the boogans refused to become warriors, instead becoming scholars, artists, or other craftsmen. It soon became apparent that there were not enough warriors to fight on both islands, but dooba refused to remove them from either island.
By the time the boogans chose a new chief, the island was in utter chaos. It was too late, and the boogans were never heard from again...
