The man is a genius...terrific show...I've got to run out for a sec, but any thoughts?

I watch him all the time! He's great, and I like the show because he gets into the science behind food and cooking. He doesn't get as much attention as Emeril and some of the other Food TV chefs, but Alton Brown's a very accomplished chef and frankly, I like him a lot better. His show has a sort of zany sense of humor. Alton also narrates and does the play-by-play coverage of "Iron Chef America," which I've only seen a couple of times, but he does a good job of that, too. Hello, fellow Texan, by the way! I'm in the Dallas area.

Emeril sucks...his show is a joke, and his recipees (in my opinion) don't have too much goin' for them. "BAM!" ah...whatever

And hello to you too! Dallas is fun, I'm probably going to see an old friend of mine soonish.

Yep, Emeril's all BAM and not much substance (or brains).

I love Austin. That's where I went to school. A mighty fun place, that city!

Take care!

I read on wikipedia that a lot of the time the clocks read 4:20 for some good ol' pot humor. Every time I watch it I look for a clock, I've seen them a couple of time but never had enough time to see what the time said on them. If I had Tivo or something it would be easier to see if its true.

back when i had cable tv i watched food network alot, not just cuz i'm a stoner and i like seeing the food, but i'm also a cook, i actually taught myself to cook (and ask anyone that's ate my food i cook damn well at that) entirely by just watching food network, i never had even the slightest bit of help on cooking from anyone, not my parents, not my grandparents, not anyone else, just me and food network... i miss cable =/

Damn, I thought I was the only one. Good Eats is definitely the best cooking show out there. Not only is Alton way better than any of the other FoodTV hosts but the show itself is much more informative. He doesn't just tell you how to make one recipe, he tells you the "why's" which are far more important. I've been recording these and have about 20 on DVD so far and a bunch more I haven't transferred over yet. Anyone know how many of these shows have been done??

This is cool! We all ought to band together and form the Alton Brown 420 Fan Club.

Does anyone else know who chef/author/traveler Anthony Bourdain is and like him? I adore the guy. He had a show on Food TV called "Cook's Tour" and is now on the Travel Channel doing a show called "No Reservations." Food TV didn't renew his show because he sometimes tends to make acerbic comments about some of their less skilled (but very popular) TV stars like Emeril and Rachel Ray, whom I cannot stand. Anyway, to my way of thinking, Tony Bourdain is perhaps the coolest celebrity chef there is. He would be all for a 420 fan club, too. He's a recovered heroin addict.

Alton's probably my favorite, but I confess I enjoy Giada DeLaurentiis and Paula Deen. I think the dishes they make are solid, and I've never found myself disliking them personally. Rachel Ray really grosses me out, though, and so does Emeril. They're both weak links in the cooking world, I think.

My husband and I ate at one of Bobby Flay's restaurants in NYC about four years back and met him briefly. He was haughty as hell and very stuck up, we thought. I think he has a real inflated opinion of himself. We also ate at Mario Batali's restaurant, Babbo, and the food there was amazing. But "multo Mario" sorts grosses me out, too, just on account of the way he looks. That guy's gonna fall over dead one of these days from a heart attack.

OMG! i forgot about mario....the redheaded italian prick...he's always sweating and wearing those godforsaken rubber gardening clogs...and shorts..eww and rachel ray, she tries to pull off the no bra shirts, but someones gotta tell her she needs titties to do that...and giada, with her massive lower jaw...now that i think about it, i dont like many people...in general...thank god for the internet

You're so funny!!!! Yep, Mario is one sweaty, unsexy, red-faced man, isn't he?

So Munchee, have you ever seen or heard of Anthony Bourdain? I think you'd like him. He's got an attitude. And he's cute!

Yeah, Tony Bourdain is good too. I like the fact that he goes and tries all the fun stuff that the locals eat. He's more likely to eat off of some street vendor's cart than in some fancy restuarant. I've done a lot of travelling in Asia and know for a fact that some of the street vendor stuff is awesome, even if it looks scary.

On one of his shows he was in the South American jungle and took some native psychedelic concoction. He was showing some indian shaman making the stuff and then made some statement about the fact that the producers wouldn't actually let him do it. He was just going to watch someone else take it (wink, wink) and they show him go into the hut. The next thing they show is him coming out of the hut the next morning with a totally dazed look on his face. In other words, even if they couldn't show him tripping out he wasn't going to pass up the opportunity.

06-16-2006, 05:41 PM
Tony's a wild man. I just love him. I love it that he's open to trying all sorts of things, too. From street vendor food to psychoactive substances around the world, he's ready to experience it all. I enjoy his wry sense of humor. Like in one of those recent shows in India, he went on a long bus trip to some far-off province, and the bus made a late-night stop in a truck stop, where he ate the food. He openly admitted he'd probably "be riding the porcelain bus" the next day after eating there, but that didn't stop him a bit.

I'd like to do a whole lot more traveling in Asia. I've been to India once, but I didn't get to see enough, and I've been to Hong Kong on business. I'd like to see mainland China and Thailand and Malaysia, I think, and to do a thorough tour of India. Where all have you been, Fengzi?

I think Mario made 10 best men in a mag a couple years ago,you gotta admit he is a cooking wiz...

Rachael, gag me wit a plastic spoon,,, huh huh...

Bobby, yes Bird,he is sooofullof himself,Firehouse Jack, his first partner was the grilling guru....

Paula is a fat southern I would not want to be a relative of mine...

Emeril has got a solid fan club and that is all,he tried a TV sitcom and failed miserably,Alton I believe would make a much better go at a sitcom IMHO...

I agree that Tony Bourdain traveling all over the world was cool,I like when they put him on at 4 in the morning...

Alton has always captured me,I will see him and stop flicking channels, well I'll stop until the commercial comes on...

Gaida,I would def tap...

Finally I would like to see Emeril blow it big time on the Iron Chef!!!

Man, I'd LOVE it if Paula Deen was my aunt or mom! That lady can cook. I had a wonderfully funny, matronly looking Southern grandmother whom I adored, so I can't hold either her Southernness or her plumpness against Paula.

Hey birdgirl, I've been to Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, and actually lived in China for a while so I've been all over it. Plus, since my wife's family is all in China we still go back about once a year. China's a great place to travel, there's tons to see and the people are very friendly. It can be a bit tough if you don't speak Chinese though, especially once you get out of the big cities since almost nobody speaks English there.

Despite my connections with China, I think my favorite place in Asia is Thailand. Something about it has such an incredible "exotic" feel to it. Hard to explain but I've heard the same thing from other people who've been there. The food there is so damn spicy though. I usually enjoy spicy food but even "mild" in Thailand will ment your tongue.

The key to eating in any of the places I've been is just to use common sense. I know a lot of people won't go to the street vendors but they have the tastiest stuff and you can fill your belly for pennies-literally! Most hot food is usually safe. I don't care how many festering salmonella bacteria are in something, once they've been in boiling oil they're harmless. The only time I ever got sick travelling in Asia was when I ate some cold food in a really nice, clean , Korean restuarant in Shanghai. I ended up in a Chinese hospital after that. That was nothi gcompared to the food poisoning I got from a Togo's sandwhich shop here in the U.S. though.:(

Thanks for the info, Fengzi! You just confirmed my every suspicion about Thailand being exotic and spicy and wonderful. I'd probably be knocked over by the peppery food, but I'm sure I'd have a similar reaction to the country itself.

You know two other places I want to go? Vietnam and Cambodia. They played such a big background role in the landscape of my childhood, what with the war on and both countries in the news day and night. It just seems like a place those of us who came of age in the 60s and 70s probably ought to see. I understand they're both spectacularly beautiful countries, and I already know I'd like the gentle, lovely people whose countries we helped wreak such havoc on. That same motivation to see a country that I remember hearing about in childhood was part of the attraction I felt toward India. It was where John, Paul, George and Ringo went, so by golly, I felt I needed to go check it out, too, even if it was 30 years later!

You guys gotta be kidding. Rachel Ray? I never quite figured out what the big deal about her was. She's ok looking, kinda girl-next-doorish, but certianly nothing special. The thing i can't stand is that she's soooo phony acting. Watch that $40 show. Everytime you eats anything she closes her eyes and gets this look like she just came or something "mmmnn, this 7-11 burrito is so good, so nice and firm and when you put it in your mouth the juice just cums squirting out, and best of all, its was only 80 cents"

birdgirl73

I think Rachel Ray is nasty. And a major cheeseball, too.

Giada DeLaurentiis has 10,000 times more class. Frankly, just about anyone has more class than Rachel Ray.
