ok so i found out from a reliable source that the people that are trafficing a lot of the weed into my region have been spraying it with pneumonia so that it doesn't smell when they're bringing it in. My question is how concerned should I be with this? I bought an oz the other day and its some dank shit but after finding this out, It doesn't really sound that safe.

http://www.jtbaker.com/msds/englishhtml/a5916.htm That is a decent MSDS for ammoina (chemcial name Ammonium Hydroxide). It strongly warns against burning because of the hazardous products it could decompose to (nitrous oxides and ammonia gas)... basically, no weed is worth fucking around with your health that badly.

ah cool, thanks for the link. I tried google, but I couldn't find anything. I'm just going to get rid of this shit.

edit>> what if I used a vaporizer? just a thought. I'm not really too concerned with salvaging the weed. I'll just get some more.

Routes of Exposure
Inhalation
Inhalation of ammonia may cause nasopharyngeal and tracheal burns, bronchiolar and alveolar edema, and airway destruction resulting in respiratory distress or failure. Ammonia's odor threshold is sufficiently low to acutely provide adequate warning of its presence (odor threshold = 5 ppm; OSHA PEL = 50 ppm). However, ammonia causes olfactory fatigue or adaptation, making its presence difficult to detect when exposure is prolonged. Anhydrous ammonia is lighter than air and will therefore rise (will not settle in low-lying areas); however, vapors from liquefied gas are initially heavier than air and may spread along the ground. Asphyxiation may occur in poorly ventilated or enclosed.

Children exposed to the same levels of ammonia vapor as adults may receive larger dose because they have greater lung surface area:body weight ratios and increased minute volumes:weight ratios. In addition, they may be exposed to higher levels than adults in the same location because of their short stature and the higher levels of ammonia vapor found nearer to the ground.

Also since you posted the question, ammonia is used in the production of cigarettes.

:( It's not worth using something that's supposed to make you feel great and get ill from it. Gah........my 2cents worth

usually an ammonia aroma on bud is from mold.

there are far better ways of masking the smell for smuggling than using ammonia and seriously doubt if anyone would risk ruining an investment by doing it.

You remember any high school chemistry, the Hydroxide group written -OH well that's the same -OH in NaOH, soium hydroxide, or LYE! When you allow the -OH to disassociate it becomes chemically active and can burn the living fuck out of sensitive membranes.

Get your money back! If you're not sure, and you have access to testing equipment, put some in water and let it soak for a while then test the pH. If it is higher than like 6, there's a chance there might be a little in it. If it's higher than 7, watch out.

Anyway ammonia has a strong smell. If you don't know what it smells like, go buy some Parson's floor cleaner and take a nice whiff. When your eyes are done getting all watery you will know what to sniff for on your weed.
To confound this, botyris-infested (moldy) bud can start to stink ammonia too.

My 2 cents, adding ANYTHING -water, ammonia, other drugs, whatever- to bud you're selling is MESSED UP. If some dumbass wants to crush up their psych meds and roll a fatty that's their problem. It like defeats the whole idea of weed being a nice gentle natural herb! DUH.

I never took chemistry when i was in high school so I wasn't aware of the dangerous effects of ammonia. I definitely under-estimated the power of it, heh. I'm not gonna be messing around with that stuff. The weed doesn't really smell like ammonia, but this is just what my friend said so i got kind of paranoid. I'm going to get rid of it anyway, just in case. My dealer has some nice kush in, so i'll just get some of that instead, haha.

I dunno, if their actually was ammonia on it I think it would be noticable.... try burning some with your lighter and see what it smells like and look at what the ashes look like, their should be something different about it if its got ammonia on it
