i firmly believe that i am depressed. my friend gave me three of his 100 mg Zolofts, and i have them with me, but am unsure how many to take, and possible side affects these may have. i am currently taking no other medicines. how many should i take??

short term use will not help. if you are feeling so low you need to report it to us you really should make an appointment with your doctor so s/he can steer you towards where you'll get the most help. no one here is capable of giving you a beneficial answer so please seek a profesional...

I agree with MG, probably best to have your primary care doctor's advice. What's depressing you? Any other signs/symptoms? What's on your mind?

Self Prescribing your self drugs for depression aint the best idea. Most people including me have done it but it is a very tempory solution and often makes it worse. You would be better off dealing with the source of the depression. Either by going to a doctor or doing stuff that makes you happy. Doing some exercise usually pulls me out of a bad mood. Sometimes a good ecstacy experience can do wonders for working things out in your head and help you become more positive but it does have risks as there usually is a bad comedown for a few days.

I would not suggest using anti-depressants if they weren't prescribed to you by a doctor. There are simple reasons for this, but I like to call them common sense:

1. You don't know how fucked up your friend REALLY is, so you don't know how strong this shit is.
2. Assuming it says on the box 'NOT STRONG. TAKE AS MANY AS YOU WANT'. Do you really know what effect it will have on YOUR body? Are you allergic to something?
3. Anti-depressants are more dangerous than suicide. It is not similar to ABC gum (Already been chewed). You can't share with your friends and you shouldn't.

Do you see what I'm getting at here? Rather get your own prescription - that way you'll get the perfect drug for you, first time, every time.

If your really intent on taking those thing's take one in the morning after a meal. 100mg is moderate so you don't need more than one. Other than that, make an appointment with your doctor. He will prescribe something short term that you can continue until you feel it necessary to stop. I got anti-depressants once but I barely took any, its not really the answer but if it stops you from doing something stupid then use them.

Zoloft is one of a class of psych meds called SRIs, for Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitors. What this means is that the brain chemical seratonin, which is responsible for feelings of happiness, is produced and then reabsorbed by the body; SRIs prevent or delay reabsorption. ZOLOFT WILL NOT MAKE YOU HAPPY. I can guarantee that. That is not what it was designed for.

I take the stuff and it is EXCELLENT for anxiety/panic disorders. I do not have any information on its application to straight depression; friends who have classic clinical depression are treating it through therapy rather than drugs.

This is the scoop:

1. It does not begin to work for at least 2 weeks of continuous use.

2. You MUST take the pills at the same time each day. If you take one late or early, you may have a fun time trying to sleep...If you miss a day, guess what, you get the initiation side effect all over again! See below...

3. You must NOT stop taking them without going back to your doc.

4. 100mg is a big dose. I take HALF of the smallest pill, which is 25mg, with the desired effect.

5. The side effects are not fun. You WILL get the taco shits for like the first week or so, and in my case my anxiety became WORSE before getting better.

Again, this is something your doctor will guide you through.

6. Do NOT play around with psych meds. MAny of them do not function properly if you go off them and try to start again, so you may be shooting yourself in the foot by messing with them. This is VERY serious.

I know this thread is a few days old but hopefully you have not taken any pills yet. If you are depressed, the first thing you should do is get rid of alcohol or other depressants from your life. Go see a counselor who will point you in the right direction. If you prefer not to see a counselor, meditation can be quite beneficial. Also strenuous exercise such as running or cycling can increase seratonin levels in your body and lead to longer periods free of depression.

I hope this will be helpful. You know, season 7 of Seinfeld is due out soon... go rent it, light up a bowl, and enjoy yourself!

If your really intent on taking those thing's take one in the morning after a meal. .
Very effective as a laxative. Seriously.

100mg is moderate so you don't need more than one. .Like most psych meds, doctors will frequently start someone out on a low dose and ramp it up over the course of years. How long has your friend been using this stuff? Doses start at 25mg but the drug is effective at even lower levels... 100mg is 8 TIMES what I take!

Other than that, make an appointment with your doctor. He will prescribe something short term that you can continue until you feel it necessary to stop. . Hear, hear. Zoloft doesn't work short term at all.

I got anti-depressants once but I barely took any, its not really the answer but if it stops you from doing something stupid then use them. See above. If you were thinking of doing something stupid, the best option is actually in therapy rather than drugs, which are like putting a band-aid on a cold sore... you may not be able to see it, but the underlying disease has not been addressed.

Cannabis is a more effective antidepressant than the crap they will prescribe to you like zoloft!!11
The doctors always told me, it would take a week or two to really start to work (when taking antidepressant prescriptions) and then it was 3 or 4 pills a day..but take all 3 at once, with no tolerance, you might feel nice.
Tolerance is a factor with antidepressants too. of course, bad for your liver.

after taking wellbutrin for a long time, i started associating it with the matrix.

you take the blue pill, you believe whatever you want to believe..

sorry if I stepped on your toes a bit man. I'm just really against advising someone to self- medicate with perscription drugs... weed is better anyway.

I believe I was apologizing to megaOctane.
This happens to be a subject I'm pretty familiar with; I was under the impression that we were here to exchange information. The apology was because I was not trying to insult megaOctane, just to clarify a few things.

Call me stodgy but I firmly believe that perscription meds are a last resort and you should have a doctor along for the ride. If you disagree; fine, just don't tell me I'm stepping on your head by doing so.
