starting a grow in my spare bedroom....might have it in open area or might build a cab, but none the less, i am wondering what everyone thinks of 12 plants feminized with a 800 or 1000 watt hps. i dont know toomuch about the light/plant ratio, all i know is i grew once with a 2 250 and 4, had decent results.

thanks ..

800w will do for 12 plants, just because the 1000w gives out so much more heat.

perfect, thank you for the reply.

if you dont mind, just got a few other questions, its been awhile..

what size pots do you reccomend using?

is the bst way to start to germintate, then plant in syrofoam cups or is there another good method?

when i plant the germinated seed into whatever is best, how far should i put the light over the plants and i use the 18-24 hour light cycle from then on until flower, correct?

and lastly, whats a good technique for the drainage for the plants, just use a rubermaid or two, cut holes for the pots, and let the water drain in there? and have a drain system botton of the rubbermaid?

i really appritate this. i am starting this very soon.

whenever possible go with more watts.... 1000 watt hps bulbs kept at 12 inches from flowering plants produce buds that are not even comparable to 2 - 400 watt bulbs...

yes 1000 watts gives off more heat... but you will just need to address that... and I think you will be able to handle the heat very easily if you are dedicating an entire room for your grow...

you can grow 12 plants in 3-5 gallon pots... you can simply use water trays from any nursery under each pot...

ideally you will plant the seeds into rockwool cubes or peatmoss pellets until they germinate and then transfer the rockwool/pellets into the 3-5 gallon containers...

for the first 5-7 days after germination you only should use fluorescent lighting... it takes a very observant and highly AWARE grower to start with a 1000 watt bulb on seedlings... I strongly strongly recommend you start with some form of flourescent lighting...

then introduce your hps on the 5-7th day.... start with the hps at 36 inches from your young plants and each day move it closer a few inches...

have fans blowing on your plants at a slight angle upward.. blowing the heat up and away from the tops of your plants...

every 12 inches you light looses half of its power.. this means smaller buds...i'd guess that at LEAST 90% of all growers keep their lights to far from their plants...and suffer dramatic yield losses... sad but true

use the hand test... put your hand at the top of your plants... if your hand can stand the heat , so can your plants.. if it is to hot, don't raise your light... instead figure out a way to cool down the room/area between the tops of your plants and the light..

wow, amazing reply.

got a few more q's for ya.

what is a rockwool cubes or peatmoss pellets. and i use these after i use a tradiotional germintation process? is this better then say a regular foam cup? what is the cost of these? if they are def way btter then a tradiotional way, ill def look into that!

i am going to take all your advice, but the biggest one i see is the lighting for the first few days.....you say use a fluorescent light? those are those basic cheap lights from any home depot type store correct? what size light would you reccomend for 10 plants?

and what are some techniques for how far a fluorescent lighting should be from these new plants.

as far as my grow room, well i live in a apartment complex that i currently smoke in, with no problems really.

the prediciment i am in, is should i simply have the 10 plants out in the middle of the room with light above, or should i build a big cab with a fan setup? i cant afford carbon at the momment, but am just trying to keep the smell to the most mininum possible? would a sealed cab with a simple computer fan setup be good, without a carbon....or is it kinda pointless to have a cab w/o carbon? thanks again!

also, what is a good temp to keep the room at? i am going to use a small fan placed by the palnts, and another floor fan cirulating the room, and i have a digtal temp gauge...to keep control of the temp.

Fluro lights are good to start, the sky is the limit with them and plants veg really good. However when It comes to a flower light go with a hortilux eye 1000HPS. If you can afford one, get a digital ballast to go with it 30% saving on electric. You will not regret the hortilux. Try a cheap bulb, I did.
Peat pellets are in the garden section like Jiffy seven, you let them soak and they swell up moist. Poke a little hole in top and pop in seed, keep moist. When roots appear plant in soil and not MG. If you can't cover the smell depends on what strain, what's the point in a cab. The room must be light sealed for flowering. 12/12/ . 68 to 70 degrees, with a breeze gently blowing between the light and the plants.. Good luck and keep us up. Maybe a grow log ?
