Ok my first grow outdoors is doing quite well. Im not sure how old it is but its about 14" tall. I dont want it getting any taller so i want to force flowering. I have this huge pot im going to put over the plant. I know it has to have 12 hour light/dark cycles. I can handle the 12 hour darkness but does it need 12 hours of direct sunlight? This would be a problem since the sun sets on the other side of my house away from the plants view. Will 12 hours of daylight work? thanks in advance :rasta:

I used a 20 gallon trash can last year, a clean trash can of course. Cover your plant for 12hrs to induce flowering. Direct sunlight would be best. If your plant out grows your pot you can aways use a old tire for more height. (Placing the MJ plant in the middle of the old tire)
good luck.

Thanks for the advice roach. After i start the flowering, does the plant continue to grow in size? If so my best bet would be tieing it down?

It is a real pain in the ass and something you can't screw around much with so be sure you are ready to commit yourself to a twice daily schedule of fucking with your plants. You can stretch darkness a bit but not daylight. Daylight can be shortened within your timeframe but never lengthened. When you apply the darkness NO LIGHT can get in. Are you sure you are ready for 2 months of this?

You should expect the plant to double in heigth during flowering but allow room for tripling to be safe. It depends on the strain and environment. Direct sunlight is not needed all day. Mine usually get only 3-4 hours of direct and still get quite large. Some are grown directly under mesquite trees with little direct light but plenty of ambient light and they often have to be tied down to keep from overgrowing the 6-8' treetops. So no, direct sunlight is not necessary all day.

Thanks JLP  . It does sound like a pain. I guess ill have to tie it down either way. Do you think i should just let it flower on its own instead of forcing it? Thanks again bro.:rasta:

Then it would get alot bigger then u wanted right? I think u should force it to flower while the weather is at its warmest and the sun is shining strongly. The flower buds will form much faster, larger and reach their peak potency.

thanks philly. so its still gonna get taller? its 16" today when i measured it. I dont really have anything bigger than this pot i have, its probably about 24" tall. I dont have any tires around either :)

if you do keep growing it outside it'll flower naturally sometime around the mid to end of aug and harvest anywhere from mid sept-early oct...most likely. so there's your choice...do you spend the next 2 months faithfully force-flowering or do you wait several months for an outdoor harvest in the fall?

I'm growing outside and man, just let it flower on its own. It'l spare you much effort.

Looks like im going to have to tie it down either way. btw thanks for the feedback guys. I really dont want to wait until sept to harvest though :rasta: . Do you think it would be possible to transplant it to a large pot, then bring it inside when its time for the 12 hour dark periods?? Would transplanting a 16" plant be hazardous to its health? :smokin:

Ok i transplanted it to a large pot today. I rigged up a dark tall cabinet that i have it in now. I hope the plant doesnt die bc of the move but i dug it up with lots of dirt underneath it and the roots didnt see any daylight. Ill take a picture of it in the cabinet tomorrow bc i dont want to let any light in til the 12 hours are up. So i can leave it dark for more than 12 hours? The more darkness it gets the faster the flowers produce? Im going to put a steak in the dirt next to the plant so i can tie it down tomorrow. When i tie it down is it going to grow sideways?? If so thats probably gonna be a problem, bc the cabinet isnt that wide.

to be on the safe side why dont you find a bigger cabinet/container. you can go down to the garden centre and get a huge cheap plastic plant pot for about £5-10 / $15-20 i think.....just a thought pal
