well i've been germinating for the past ~40hrs and my seed has cracked, and i can see the little taproot pokin out.
But, the tap root has been the same size for about 15-20 hrs and hasnt grown any. Is this a lost cause or should i try putting it in soil?

plus, im not exactly sure what is causing this, but there is sort of a rotting smell coming from the papertowl.

dont put it in soil just yet but keep it wet, if i was u i would wait another 24hrs if not more, if u really dont think it's growin then get a clean pear of tweezers an carefuly open the seed and take the shell off and plant the seedling.
GOOD LUCK!

either plant it taproot down, into soil, or throw it away ... do NOT expect it to survive if you tamper with the seed ... also, when seed struggles to remove its shell, it strengthens the seedling for its future growth ... :smokin:

it was germinating in the dark on top of my internet router for a little warmth...
i panicked and planted the whole seed under about 2-3 cm of soil...
should i take it out and remove the shell? the sprout is barely sticking out of the shell.

That is a very bad idea to take the shell off .The shell will come off on its own .I let my tap root grow about 3/8s of an inch then plant it .If it doesnt grow any more in the next 24 hours plant it and hope for the best.(Co Dee you should not be giveing info that might kill the plant or if you didnt know you shouldnt take the shell off even if it's planted and comeing up it will come off on it's on)

thanks for the info guys! its my first time and my only seed so i really want it to survive... its planted right now and i dont think im gonna mess with it anymore...
The light it about 3-4 inches off the top of the soil and i will be watching it like a hawk.
Just for my info, how many days should i expect for it to sprout the surface?

another real quick question... should i have packed the dirt down before i planted?

no. leave the soil somewhat loose, and leave your lights on 24 hours/day until the plant breaks thru the surface , then go to 18/6 ... :smokin:

No you never pack down the dirt .You want your dirt fluffy thus meaning more air to your roots .Less air you got the less your plants will grow .

what do you think the chances of survival are based on the fact that the seed appears to have stopped growing and there was a weird smell?

Worst thing you cn do mate. The seedling is the most delicate part of the life process. Taking the seed shell off before its ready will no doubt end in bereavement.

baaaah... its been a couple days and the seedling hasn't grown much at all.
The seed split a tad bit more and is showing the taproot from top to bottom but its pretty apparent now that the seed has died. I will give it another try soon.
I think what killed it is this.. when i was germinating, i placed the papertowel in between my internet modem and the router (stacked on top of eachother). I was looking to keep it nice and warm but after leaving it there for a bit, it was really quite hot when i checked on it again. It was only at that high temp for a few hours but im confident thats what did it...
