I dont think this has been posted on here yet...and Im sure we have lots of Torrent users here...
In the morning of 2006-05-31 the Swedish National Criminal Police showed a search warrant to Rix|Port80 personnell. The warrant was valid for all datacentres of Rix|Port80 and was directed at The Pirate Bay. The allegation was breach of copy-right law, alternatively assisting breach of copy-right law.
The police officers were allowed access to the racks where the TPB servers and other servers are hosted. All servers in the racks were clearly marked as to which sites run on each. The police took down all servers in the racks, including the non-commercial site PiratbyrÄn, the mission of which is to defend the rights of TPB via public debate.
According to police officers simultaneously questioning the president of Rix|Port80, the purpose of the search warrant is to take down TPB in order to secure evidence of the allegations mentioned above.
The necessity for securing technical evidence for the existance of a web-service which is fully official, the legality of which has been under public debate for years and whose principals are public persons giving regular press interviews, could not be explained. Asked for other reasoning behind the choice to take down a site, without knowing wether it is illegal or not, the officers explained that this is normal.
The TPB can receive compensation from the Swedish state in case that the upcoming legal processes show that TPB is indeed legal.

Bittorent is a technology that is really complicated, but basically people download small files that tracks (and coordinates) the download of full files. Websites like TPB host these tracker files on thier servers, but do not host the actual files they represent. People create tracker files and then individually host the actual thing that is linked to the tracker file. After a time, people will begin to download and 'seed' (host) the file. After a while a network is created where people seed and download at the same time. Ultimately this makes Bittorent really hard to take down because the pirated files exsist everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

You have a file, you post it up on a server, people start downloading it, each person that downloads has to spare some bandwidth to upload pieces of the file(hence file sharing) Once you get 400-500 people all sharing, speeds get cranked up and you can download large files pretty quickly on a consistent basis(unlike most file sharing)
Thats the jist of it I suppose

Hackers hit Swedish police site

The Pirate Bay site says it plans to be up again shortly
Cyber vandals have attacked the website of the Swedish police, forcing it to shut down.
Police said the site was taken offline after it was overloaded by net data.
The attack came a day after the police raided several locations linked to a website accused of directing users to pirated films, music and software.
ThePirateBay.org had described itself as the largest search index for BitTorrent, a system used for sharing large files over the internet.
The entertainment industry welcomed the action against a site it argued was a major source of music and film piracy.
Raids and arrests
Swedish police are investigating the so-called denial of service attack against the website of the national police.
Such attacks are designed to overload a server by bombarding it with data.
It is not clear whether the attack is linked to the police action against The Pirate Bay.
On Wednesday, officers raided 10 locations across the country, confiscating the computers and detaining three men suspected of violating copyright laws.
The three have since been released, but a spokesman said they could still face charges.
Legal questions
The people behind The Pirate Bay argued they were not breaking the law.
They maintain that the site's function was to direct users towards the files that they search for and manage the uploads and downloads. The website itself did not hold any copyright files.
The legality of the website has not been tested in Swedish courts.
The site has been offline since Wednesday, with a statement on its homepage saying that it planned to be up and running again within a few days.
The Pirate Bay became a dominant player in tracking BitTorrent files when another search index, SuprNova.org, met its demise in late 2004.
SuprNova.org, shut down after a relentless campaign by the entertainment industry to close its operations.
