What do people here think of the army?

Has anyone been in the army before of thinking about joining.

I personally couldn't see what anyone would want to (in the UK) because you have to go for at least quite a long amount of time at least 20 something years its just like another version of prison but worse.

You have to commit to 20+ years if you want to serve in the British Army? can anyone else from the UK verify this or is this kid just full of shit?

Im in the process of joining right now, took the ASVAP like a month ago and scored over 110 in every category ^.^ I was going to go the the defense language institute so I could do linguistics BUT I can't get the security clearances required for intel positions due to my possesion arrest at the age of 16, and my more recent legal troubles! Instead im gonna be doing radiology.

Hopefully things will be smooth here on out.

I thought about joining the Army but I really don't think I would be the type. I do however respect all of the men and women fighting for their countries. It's a very noble thing to put others before yourself.

I was in the Air Force and I donâ??t regret one single day. I got to travel my ass off. I got 30 days vacation a year. I got excellent medical coverage. I got top notch training. I got to meet some of the greatest people in the world that I never would have met otherwise. I had my wisdom teeth removed free. I had a baby for freeâ?¦. And most importantly I got to serve my country. And when I got out they gave me $1000.00 dollars a month just to go to school.

And in the States a typical enlistment is 4 years active duty (actively serving) and 4 years inactive duty (eligible for recall.) Usually at the end of your 4 years active service you are given the option to reenlist (usually with a handsome cash bonus/ the more money they have invested in a soldier the bigger the bonus)

Id go with the marines but the only way id EVER join up is if i fukked up my life bad enough, then id join the marines solely because they see more action and are more hardcore. Be a badass and go infantry rifleman....

and the time that he served
had rattled all his nerves
and left a little shrapnel in his knee

gave him all the confidence he lacked
with a purple heart and a monkey on his back

I think Campbell is half-right on this one. I have a mate in the UK army that told me that if you go into a specialized field then you have to commit like years to the army. I don't know we were both sloshed and he was probably talking crap, but he also told me that he does judo and to do judo for the army's judo team then you have to be a 'career' enlisted or something.

Anyone to verify? I HAVE heard that the uk army is crap.

I was going to Join the Marines a few years back, so it would help me with school. And I have a strong sense of pride for my country (USA) and it's potential.

But the officer was being a dick and I caught him in a bunch of lies; it just put a really bad taste in my mouth. I remember him asking him what my chances were of being shipped to Iraq if I joined the Reserves, and he's like "oh, next to non-existant, bro. People who join rarey ever see combat".

Liar or not, I guess it just wasn't for me. I respect whole-heartidly the men and women who serve. Even if they're only going in to "get theirs". It's still them on the field, and we can do what we do safely just because they put themselves there.

If any of you have read my posts before you know I was in the Army Infantry and the Marine Corps Infantry. I had a great time in both of them training, shooting and partying. I did 7 years total and it was some of the great times of my life. I was trained to be a killer but very glad that I never had to. I would not join either of these forces today. The war in Iraq sucks big balls. I would hate to have to go door to door fighting the insurgents. By far the scariest way to fight a war. It was predicted when I was in that would be the next way a war would be fought. We trained so much for this type of warfare. Anyway, DO NOT JOIN THE MILITARY. Unless you like to see the haunting face of some kid you just blew away by accident for the rest of your life. If you like that sort of thing, knock yourself out.

Not sure, but I think it's a minimum of four years. You sign a contract, so you are obliged to stay for the four years, and then you can sign up again or do as you please. I don't think I'd join. The educational opportunities seem pretty cool, but not worth it on the whole. I don't love my country, I don't trust the government and I have no desire to die for something I don't believe in.

I was enlisted so I got out as a SrA (E4)

Thatâ??s probably a good idea going to OCS first. So I take it you already went to college.

One of the good things about being an officer is that you can resign your commission (basically you can quit)

You would be going to Lackland AFB for you OCS (San Antonio, TX Yeeehhhaaaww) I love military townsâ?¦I was stationed there for 2 years.

To the government your expendable, and thats all that really matters, if i find you expendable or not, it doesnt matter. Im sure you all care for each other because you have to when your out there. Most of the marines are gun-ho cowboys that really just want to kill shit. Some sadistic shit goes on over there, and its the USMC thats the large part of the problem. To join any British services you must serve a minimum of 4 years in any service, i think some Navy is possibly 3 though. You can serve a full 22 year career, but after 4 years of service you can put in to leave the army that takes a year so your really serving a minimum of 5 years.

Actually I found that our chain of command cared for us a great deal. They were soldiers just like us with families. So when you put out there the impression that our command doesnâ??t care for us and that our lives are viewed somehow expendable than you would be wrong.

No most Marines arenâ??t like that. Most are honest and dedicated individuals. They are not blood thirsty animals. Usually they have a fair amount of self-confidence and like to get rowdy when they drink. But they are for the most part very solid individuals and deserve the respect of their country.

Yes, a lot of fucked up shit goes on. ITâ?ťS WAR. Donâ??t talk to me about fairness unless youâ??re willing to apply that concept across the board.

You might see some low ranking individuals who saw it as a way to get a free ride. But you donâ??t see Marines who are past their first enlistment who are fuck ups.

And even those on their first enlistment are usually squared away. There may be however pockets of infestation (as in the case with your friends :p )

Without a war going on, the money is definately worth it. With war, it's most certainly not worth it. I almost went into the navy. Good pay and I'd be sitting on a boat playing pack man while some grunt marine was checking for landmines or something. I told the recruiter I wanted a year off to 'train' before joining. Even though I allready passed the phys-ed test (If you can tie your shoe you're pretty much up to par for the navy). I ened up finding a local job, settled down and got married so no navy for me. I do have a few friends in the service. One is a guard in the Army, the other is a tech in the air force. I've yet to meet anyone other than a marine who actually thinks we should be in Iraq. Everyone I've talked to says it's a piss hole.

Maybe some....do you have any idea how hard it is to fight an urban war? Do you think you can disguish between enemy and non combatant? Brit Army is 3 years minimum , but if you go in at 16 they don't start counting till you're 18  , the max is 21 years and then you retire with full army pension.

It all depends on which regiment you get as to how much you can learn and advance, REME is IMO best.

Thats awesome, my father and one of my best friends both went there, extremely tough from what I hear, like people disapearing in the middle of the night cause they cant hack it. Those guys will weed you out in the first week and have you recycled into something worthless possibly if you dont have what it takes. Could be a good thing I didnt go there I dont exactly have an affinity for languages.
