Why do red eyes occur?

So, we all know that it is typical to get bloodshot eyes when stoned. Could anyone explain why this happens? I'd like to know.

I believe it is because it dialates the blood vessels in the eye. Thats why people with glaucoma (sp?) smoke it.

yeah thats one theory ive heard here, and i think the guy actually had the proof to go along with it too.

what I can remember is that when you get high its relieves blood pressure in your eyes blood vessels, thats why medicinal weed is good for glucoma.

for some reason it seem like i get red eyes worse and worse the mroe i smoke. i couldnt notice a difference the first few times i was smoking, now it looks like i just poured salt in them. i honestly cant get away with not looking high any more to anyone. it is pretty sad

hes wrong, but its definatley worse wen u hottbox. maybe cuz u get more smoke in you, but maybe its actually from the smoke in your eyes. sometimes i get smoke in my eyes and i get red eye alot worse, but thats definatley not y it happens. u should tell ur freind hes a douchbag:)

Its also because of the coughing. Just cough a bunch in general..your eyes will turn redder than shit. but there was a lot of good responses..probably a mixture of everyones feedback is why our eyes are blitzed red all the time..and for those that say their eyes dont get red, your full of shit..look in a mirror in a room with the lights on and turn your eyes to the right or left..and look at them..they will be bloodshot as shit..you just dont notice when your high because you can see great and feel great..and think your eyes look normal, when in reality to a sober person they are blitzeD :stoned:

MArijuana opens up your blood vessels and thus causing the dreded "fire eye" but that is the sole purpose it helps with glaucoma.

i never usually cough when i smoke pot, and i always end up with red eye, i have heard of the blood vessels opening up tho, but i dont think its always from coughing.
