A restaurant down the street from me is run by a very lovely Greek couple, who take their baby to work with them almost everyday. He's probably about 6 months old... anyway, we were there on Mother's Day when I noticed a guy working there who looked VERY familiar. Turns out I saw him on the FL sex offender registry. I looked at his history, and he's under Supervision and has been convicted of doing something with a minor under the age of 12. :( Here's the thing- I feel I should call and say something, because I seriously doubt these people know this... also, this restaurant is across the street from the high school. The whole situation sketches me out big time.

So I'm going to call... but any suggestions as to what I should say? Any input would be greatly appreciated...

Ok, I just talked to the owner of the restaurant... he said the guys been there since before they bought it, they are aware of the situation, and keep a close watch on him.

I just don't think I'll be going there anymore with my son. :(

We all know the issue with child molesters and yes they shouldn't be near kids. But I think you should leave the guy alone. If he is sincerely trying to move away from his dark past, getting him fired wouldn't help. It could trigger him to moleste another child. The urge to a molester must be some kind of high and escape. Harassment, or complaints won't assist the situation.

Just don't bring your child anywhere near him.

Why is that so wrong that I don't want to be there with my son? Do you have children? Maybe I'm just not comfortable with the situation, and I'm entitled to feel that way. And I wasn't trying to get the guy fired, I just wanted the owners to be aware of the situation in case they didn't know- esp. since they have their son there with them every single day.

Well is he doing anything illegal? i dont really know the law over there but would it be illegal for him to be near a high school or something because of his record.

Not that I know of... but there are 2 different sex offender statuses- Supervised and Released. He is under supervision... for a reason. And the restaurant is directly across the street from the high school, however Florida law only prevents LIVING in proximity of a school, not working. It doesn't matter anyway though, the owner already knew the situation and doesn't care...

I thought he was convicted doing something with someone under 12? High schoolers are probably way too old for him. Anyways, if he's under supervision already, other citizens shouldn't need to bother with redundancy. Hopefully he's got his shit under control and is ready to lead a healthy life with a normal level of privacy allowed unto him. That's for the courts to decide though.

Check it out with your cop shop or a lawyer first...something like that can be considered a hate crime. It sure the hell isn't right but I believe I heard that regarding sex offenders. :mad:

The only possible way that could be construed as a hate crime or an act of hate in any way would be

A) If MJC were to actually harm the guy with an offender history in a way that violates the criminal code in Florida; that is, if she were to perpetrate a crime upon him motivated by any of the hate conditions in her state (which are usually only based on race, gender, and sexual orientation)
B) If what she were communicating were done with malicious intent, which is what folks have to be able to prove in order to win claims of slander or libel
C) If she were not telling the truth. The chief--and only--defense against libel or slander is the truth. And of course she'll be telling the truth.

I say this stuff with a fair degree of certainty. I earned--and never once used--a law degree and admission to the state bar here in Texas in my distant past. I've never practiced law, nor do I intend to, and I'm certainly no expert on criminal matters at all. I frankly had a very hard time with the necessary traits of having to be a skilled bully, which I am not, in that profession. It was simply my version of going to graduate school. I work instead as a practicing journalis/writer, which is how I know the tricky part about how not to libel or slander folks. Anyway, hope that helps. Speaking as a parent, I would definitely want to hear what you have to share on that topic. I hope they'll keep their baby very safe.
