Nearly 50 million pages with millions of prisoners named and precise details is soon going to be public knowledge..I never really believed that many people died until reading this story..I knew it happened but I couldn't comprehend millions of people being killed that way until I read this story. One example from the archives states that on 4-20-42..Hitlers Birthday..a gift from the Camp Commander at Mauthausen in Austria was to murder a prisoner every two minutes by shooting them in the back of the head..300 dead that day as a gift??!! I hope and pray the few survivors left will have some closure and peace after this..maybe they will know about their loved ones now..how can anyone compare the U.S. with all our flaws to that kind of evil?? It says that records were meticulous kept..everything. I don't think I will ever look at 420 the same again..weird.

When I was growing up, in Brooklyn, it was not uncommon to see Jewish people that had survived Auschwitz, and (possibly) other concentration camps, still bearing tattoos used by the Nazis to identify them. My father was an Army special forces paratrooper in WWII, and took part in the liberation of some death camps in Germany. When they arrived, the Nazis were burning bodies to get rid of evidence, and he said that the smell was something you could never forget.

He didn't talk much about these events. Many other ex-soldiers felt the same way. Some guys were extremely affected by what they experienced. They didn't use terms such as "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder" in those days. The soldiers that were really psychologically scarred were considered "shell shocked" - a term that came into use during World War One.

Ask yourself though.....what would compell the Germans to do such a crime? I mean burning people alive?? I thought humanity would have evolved by now!!

I don't know what would compel humans to enjoy murdering millions of other people..branding them like cattle..experimenting on them..starving them..seperating all those millions of family members..I can't comprehend that..as I said I knew it happened but reading about those pieces of old paper that actually recorded every name and meticulous details of that regime and what evil they commited..they were proud..and I didn't even know these documents existed..it should have happened sooner imo..may have brought closure and peace to the survivors that have since died not knowing what happened to their loved ones..those "people" were proud of what they did! Just evil.

They gassed them first and then burned the bodies. On Hitler's birthday, they shot prisoners in the head to celebrate it - this is on the link that I referenced above.

The human condition is not "evolved" - and Nazi Germany was just one manifistation of extreme stupidity in the name of "patriotism". Of course, the assets of Jews, and other groups that were considered enemies of the state, were confiscated by those in power. When masses join these extreme movements, anything can happen because it's a mob mentality.

Germans are probably the best record keepers in history.

I wouldn't condemn their whole history and civilization for the Third Reich, because this movement, with a heaping helping of traditional stupidity, grew out of dissatisfaction with their treatment, and resulting social conditions, after World War One. The seeds of the insanity can be traced back to Martin Luther and the Reformation, and the philosophies that grew out of it. Professor Nietzsche (below) is often mistakenly blamed for, or associated with, Nazism, and anti-Semitism. Nothing could be further from the truth. He hated where he saw Germany headed - and moved to Switzerland. Of course, he was long dead even before WWI.

I guess I should clarify my post..I would never condemn the entire German heritage..consider I had german/french heritage from my parents..my Father actually was very meticulate in everything he did (german)..I really enjoy learning history and I am ashamed to say I once said that I admired Hitlers thought process-in the way he controlled those many people..never for what he accomplished..just the way he came so close to winning..but after reading some about these records..I will never say that again. I also questioned the number of jews actually killed..not because I didn't believe it happened..just wanted to know how they could come to the #6 million..now it seems there were like 17.5 million names in their records..documentation of this kind of mass murder proves to me the # and much more....do you have any idea how these records survived the war? I think I will finally sell my antique inkwell with the Adolph Reik stamp..

I knew he was "bad"..I just never comprehended the evil until now. My Daddy used to say that exact same thing (yes..his great grandparents were German) and we would actually clash on our beliefs on that subject..anyway..wish he was still here so I could tell him I was wrong. When Sharon took his position and the fighting with the Palestinians escalated like it did..I was angry about all the innocent ones being killed by Israeli soldiers..I just didn't get it then...do now.

Thanks Bong..I really enjoy this forum..so far..been very humbling. That quote..Never forget History repeats itself? That is what I thought when I read more on this. I don't even know if your a liberal,democrat or republican..maybe you guys should start a beginners thread in here on the definitions of the different political "Parties"? these days. Thats why I stated from the beginning I didn't know politics well enough to debate..you can call me ignorant and it would be the truth..but learning.:)
