Remember when ol' Mr. Bush went and decided to tap peoples phone conversations - deemed by him as 'protecting our freedoms' from terrorist attack? Well, looks like its on a larger scale than you think...
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government is secretly collecting records of ordinary Americans' phone calls in an effort to build a database of every call made within the country, it was reported Thursday.
AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth telephone companies began turning over records of tens of millions of their customers' phone calls to the National Security Agency program shortly after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, said USA Today, citing anonymous sources it said had direct knowledge of the arrangement.
The program does not involve listening to or taping the calls. Instead it documents who talks to whom in personal and business calls, whether local or long distance, by tracking which numbers are called, the newspaper said.
The NSA and the Office of National Intelligence Director did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
NSA is the same spy agency that conducts the controversial domestic eavesdropping program that has been acknowledged by President Bush. The president said last year that he authorized the NSA to listen, without warrants, to international phone calls involving Americans suspected of terrorist links.
The report came as the former NSA director, Gen. Michael Hayden -- Bush's choice to take over leadership of the CIA -- was set to visit lawmakers on Capitol Hill Thursday. Hayden already faced criticism because of the NSA's secret domestic eavesdropping program. As head of the NSA from March 1999 to April 2005, Hayden also would have overseen the call-tracking program.
The NSA wants the database of domestic call records to look for any patterns that might suggest terrorist activity, USA Today said.
Don Weber, a senior spokesman for the NSA, told the paper that the agency operates within the law, but would not comment further on its operations.
"Given the nature of the work we do, it would be irresponsible to comment on actual or alleged operational issues; therefore, we have no information to provide. However, it is important to note that NSA takes it legal responsibilities seriously and operates within the law," Weber said.
One big telecommunications company, Qwest, has refused to turn over records to the program, the newspaper said, because of privacy and legal concerns.
Your country is turning into a Nazi state, and you complain. If I was an American, I for one would be out there and impeaching Bush.
How much more are you going to let this man get away with?

LoL. After I'm done growing, I'm going to make repeated phone calls to Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, and an ass load of other countries.
Wonder when I'll get a visit?

Even if Bush were successfully impeached, I don't have much faith that the next guy would do things much differently. The problem goes far beyond that one man. My plan is to just get out of this country as soon as I can.
Just ring your mate and keep talking about bombs... You'll get a visit in no time... Then they'll look like idiots lol

This is what kills me:
The Republicans have created a bigger government since thier Contract With America. Also, instead of standing up for the Constitution, they have succame the lure of power and are using thier position as the elites to try and stop the infromation trade of the pluralists because they know it could bring them thier demise. Instead of standing up for ordinary Americans, these assholes are standing up to protect thier sweet job.

I still say it's going to take force -- as in a unified opposition in the hundreds of thousands to millions, to overthrow this burden.
It's funny because it'd probably be primarily comprised of the poverty stricken to lower middle-class American population.
It's a single ideal that's missing.

I had a poli sci prof. who used to say, "It can either be done with ballots or bullets." If anything the last two elections (but is true in every election) is how easy it is to manipulate the vote.

Even I see a problem with the bullet part. If the United States goes into another 'civil war' of sorts, then it could leave us extremely susceptible to outside interference.
You could rig the ballots, I suppose. But then the only question is who you would rig it in favor for.

Yeah, I honestly think good social progress can be made in this country without resorting to bullets (the thought of having to kill my countrymen to ensure change is really depressing). In Oregon, we are working at an election reform bill to keep corprate intrests as far away from the policy maker. Also, in Portland, we have a campaigns that are financed publically so that anyone who can get enough support can run. Things like this take power away from the elites and makes government about results not talk.

Bush Doesn't Confirm NSA Data Collection
WASHINGTON -
President Bush did not confirm or deny a newspaper report Thursday that the National Security Agency was collecting records of tens of millions of ordinary Americans' phone calls.
"Our intelligence activities strictly target al-Qaida and their known affiliates," Bush said. "We are not mining or trolling through the personal lives of innocent Americans."
USA Today, based on anonymous sources it said had direct knowledge of the arrangement, reported that AT&T Corp., Verizon Communications Inc., and BellSouth Corp. began turning over records of Americans' phone calls to the NSA shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Congress to look at NSA database of US phone calls
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Senate panel will ask U.S. phone companies about a new report that the National Security Agency has been secretly collecting phone records of tens of millions of Americans, including calls made within the United States.
USA Today reported that the domestic spy agency has been building up the database using records provided by three major phone companies -- AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and BellSouth Corp. -- but that the program "does not involve the NSA listening to or recording conversations."
"We've got to call on those telephone companies to provide some information to figure out what is going on," Sen. Arlen Specter, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said on Thursday.

NSA has massive database of Americans' phone calls
The National Security Agency has been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans, using data provided by AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, people with direct knowledge of the arrangement told USA TODAY.
The NSA program reaches into homes and businesses across the nation by amassing information about the calls of ordinary Americans â?? most of whom aren't suspected of any crime. This program does not involve the NSA listening to or recording conversations. But the spy agency is using the data to analyze calling patterns in an effort to detect terrorist activity, sources said in separate interviews.
