View Full Version : Cannabis.com Under New Ownership as of May-1st-2006

Cannabis.com
05-08-2006, 04:53 PM
Cannabis.com is under new ownership as of last Monday, May-1st-2006.

The sale consisted of the cannabis.com internet domain name along with some assorted variations...

The content itself was included at no cost to be used in conjunction with Cannabis.com only in a similar manner as it is now as per licensing agreements.

While I can't say for certain what the new owner will or won't do, as of now, relatively few changes are expected.

Some may wonder why I sold Cannabis.com - in a nutshell, after nearly 9 years, it was time to hand over the reins to someone else who can take Cannabis.com to the next level.

I'll still be around, but not as the administrator - the new owner will be assuming that responsibility shortly along with daily operations, etc - please be patient as they learn the many tasks involved and become more comfortable with various aspects of Cannabis.com

Take care.

Ron Bennett

p.s. I'll still be around and occasionally post; those who want to keep in touch with me, I may be contacted via email at [email protected] ([email protected]) and/or at Marihemp Network http://www.marihemp.com/ (http://www.marihemp.com/) and/or at http://www.baked.com/

the new owner can and hopefully will display it,
but he can never claim to have painted it.

Thanks for this place and all the sites that are, once were, or have been helped by the MariHemp Network!

Me 4, this site in general is a unique entity, with worldwide resources. One can benefit much towards the quest for knowledge through means of this cyber-tool. I would say "To kno is to gro, and cannabis.com has been/is/will hopefully continue to be, the medium". Greetings to the new owner(s).

Howdy Ron,

I would like to express my thanx for you being bold enough and brave enough,to have started this site and Marihemp..you've pulled together our community of Cannabinauts in a wonderful way and enhanced the bonds that tie us together..it will take a common effort,to defeat the prohibition of marijuana and the awful toll that prohibition has caused on this country and around the world.

So..are ya gonna git to spend more time with yer family and do some fishin and campin ? I hope so ! :) Are ya gonna focus even more on marijuana activism ?

May God bless you and your's :)

Have a good one ! :stoned:

I don't think the issue is HOW the website will be run, but how much exposure we could have now ... while I'm not a paranoid, (I'm a prescribed med-user), I see some possibilies, notice I said 'possibilities', that the wrong sort of person COULD have been the buyer, granting him access to the e-mail addresses, etc of the Users, ... remember, everybody had to register to post in here ... I would think the new owner is simply one of US, and we have nothing to worry about ... I say all that, so as not to add to any un-warranted rumours , or suspicions ... :smokin:

me 5... I hope eventually the new owner will expand past a simple webpage. Move into new possibilty's such as a cannabis magazine like high times. Where ur forum folk have a place in. THere has to be a way to turn this cannabis.com into a franchise that will help fund the marijuana activism in a good way. And help do its part to end the prohibition of marijuana.

Inactive members have no affect on the server or in no way slows the server down. How could they, there are not here to call the server with requests?

Why are so many people worried? The new owner bought this website and is going to continue running it similarly. You have to remember that it is a Business after all and Im pretty sure that he said on the original ebay auction that it makes something around 6 figures... By the : "some assorted variations... " remark he meant that he also sold other pot related domain names he had ownership of...

I have a few questions:

1) Did the previous owner (Ron) perform any due dilligence to make sure the buyer was not a front company for LEO? That is my and should be everyone else's #1 concern. Especially in the current political climate. Then again, I'm a super-paranoid about everything all the time...Where's my tin foil hat?

2) Are security/Privacy procedures going to change due to the new ownership?

3) Just for fun, can we get an idea of what this site was sold for? let's just talk the number of decimal places: 5 figures, 6 figures, 7 figures, etc.

4) Could the new owner PLEASE introduce themselves? I'd like to see references to existing/previous web sites they have owned/managed. Given the lag time from sale to now, I assume it is a large company.

In any event, good luck Ron. I hope you got a shitload of cash for this place. I know I'm a new comer and an OG refugee to boot, but it saddens me to see such changes. Please visit when you can. Thank you very much for your service to the marijuana community and advocates of freedom everywhere.

Fucking rock on.

Ron, how did you determine who you sold Cannabis.com to? You sold to the highest bidder right? What assurance do we have that these people aren't working for a government?

It wouldn't be illegal for LEO to buy this website off of you and bust people.

That makes no sense that if LEO bought the site then the new owners would ban all sales,mom,dealing,hook-ups etc...what would be the use? Whats happening on the boards now is not illegal so why would LEO want the site with changes being enforced that eliminate their job..doesn't add up.

Questioning whether or not LEO purchased this site IS a valid concern. You cannot dispute that fact.

Reasons why LEO would benefit from purchasing this site:
1) They can log IP addresses without any need for warrants or the like.
2) They will know the user name and passwords of everyone here, which the owners/administrators can then use to hack people's email accounts (gmail, msn), blogs (MySpace, Friendster), etc. on other websites if the user uses the same password/username.
3) Also, by knowing everyone's email as an owner/admin, they may be able to glean more evidence about the user's identity. E.g., if the user's contact email is [email protected], LEO has one more thing to point to which verifies the user's identity.
4) They can read the PM's of paying members, which may contain information on illegal activities that they would want to investigate.
5) They gain revenue to fund their bogus WOD.
6) They can censor/ban posters who have something to say on this site which exposes LEO's activities.
7) By owning the site, it would sure clear up any legal ambiguities about how LEO should have been allowed to capture information on this website to use in an investigation of the posters.
8) By identifying the posters on this site with information the LEO owners gained through owning Cannabis.com, LEo could use the information to establish contact with posters through other means. Examples would be, initiating contact with the poster via undercover agent in person, chat rooms, etc.
9) with the use of relatively little manpower, LEO can monitor the activities of thousands of people and gain information on their indentities, residence, activities, and evidence of illegal activities.
