They are sometimes used, however aren't really used since metal halide and high pressure sodium are much better. Get one of those or flourescent (flourescent doesn't perform as well.)

Lamp Type ....................Watts.... Lumens/bulb ....Total efficiency
Fluorescent Bulb ..............40................3000........... 30k lumens
Mercury Vapor................ 175.............. 8000 ............20k lumens
Metal Halide................... 400 ..............36000 ...........36k lumens
High P. Sodium ................400.............. 45000........... 45k lumens

Notice the Mercury Vapor lamps are less efficient than the fluorescent (FL), and can not be positioned as close to the plants, so the plants will not be able to use as much of the MV light. The light distribution is not as good either. MV lamps simply are not suitable for indoor gardening.

Good luck and have a good grow!

No one has said anything about LPS. MV arnt all that good, no one really uses them. Get a HPS, you'll get alot better yeild wise.

they do make phosphor coated mercury vapor bulbs, raises the color from 5900k to 4000k (still not ideal, but quite a bit more red).

MH or metalarc bulbs don't work in my mercury fixtures/ballasts, (tried a few) is there a conversion? Not that my MV fixtures don't make fat buds, it would be nice to use metalarc, that's all.

I'll stick with MV, $50 will buy 3-4 coated MV bulbs, or 2 more MV fixtures with bulbs. Either way my floro and mv setup works quite well, compared to my first few done with just floros.
