Please offer your good advices -

A friend of mine and I have a disagreement about sexing seedlings when placing them into the 12/12 cycle.

I say that you should sex ASAP when the plant is only 4-6 inches tall with just a couple of sets of opposing leaves.

He says that you should wait until the plant is older, fully mature, with many branches and ready to flower permanently; minimum 2-3 feet tall.

What do you think ladies & gents?

I've heard two guidelines, wait at least two weeks or until the plant has grown a fifth node.

If you have the room you are always better off sexing a clone so the plant can keep on growing with as little stress as possible.

You just cut a clone root it and the flower the rooted clone. Now you get the proper sex and no stress on the growing plant and no step backward waiting for the plant to catch up to finish vegging.

You CAN wait, but 3 foot sounds a tad tall. They will finish at atleast double that size, so you gotta be sure theres enough room in the grow room.

Dude once he swiches to 12/12 there not going to dubble higth + thats stuiped. Claiming a 15-35% at most is more reasonable when budding your shits not shooting up 2X+ lip thats rediculas:smokin: so IMO 3ft will get 4ft at MAX during 12/12 it wont be 6ft + rofl

he tells the facts that he has seen his self in his own grows so you saying this is bassicly calling him a liar have you seen any of his grows to make you think this ? probally not!!!!, in most cases i have seen this too and i totally agree during flowering under oprimal conditions the plant can double in size and sometimes triple in size so this makes me think you are growing wrong or dont have the same sort of growing conditions as lip , maybe if you asked him what his grow specs are he would tell ya !!!!

man i hate people that are quick to put people down on here there is no need at all ,this is a place where people can compare grows and techniques and get some advice

Thanks guys and yeah LIP & Zandor that is what I am asserting.

Why waste nutes, space and time (most important!) just to find out that you have a male on your hands that you have to chop?

Even with great lineage, females are still only about 60% of your crop.
That is over 1/3rd of your space (time & money) gone to waste.

Down side is that you have to revert the tiny ones back to 18/6 vegging which also takes time get them beefed up for final flowering.

BTW - Dutch Passion feminized seeds truly have very good female rates of over 90%!:thumbsup:

...to further clarify, this would be for determination of a couple of mothers for cloning purposes.

Cloning is the way to go if you have the space available.

I have never said i DONT use fans, and if i have, quote it and give a URL of the post, cos i'd love to see it.

I have done grows from 60 to 90... Im not saying that i havnt had my fair share of high temps, altohugh it hasnt effected my grows too much, but ffs, i have used fans for every grow i have ever done...

And yes, at the moment, the lights are providing enough heat to heat my house, then again, its not really all that cold in UK at the moment, so that means nothing..

When i do grow i always change the strain, but normally keep it at least a 50% indica. I like skunk #1 and Super Skunk.

K2 and NL are damn nice to relax and go to sleep.

WW i grew, but i think i stressed it somehow and got hermies and males only. No straight females... but i still got damn nice bud.

One i would like to try though is erm .... whats it called.... White Rhino.. thats the one lol!

I used to go by.....veg grow for 8 weeks, flower for 8 weeks give or take depending on strain, did you start from clone or seed and was a clipping taken from that plant. :rasta:

Yeah, Sandman, instead of vegging the plant for until it is ready to actually flower for crop purposes.

If you have 10 plants like that in big containers (soil) you will have to toss about 4 of them into the trash.

That is allot if space displaced when you could have been using small containers in a much smaller area while existing flowering plants thrive on the extra space & light.

Downside is it does take about a week to effectively revert it back to vegging. This stunts growth as it is a shock to their system.

The clones are rooted under 24/0 to push them. You are not going to finish them so don't worry about stress at this point. It will take about 10 days for them to root then switch them right to 12/12 and you will know the sex in about another 7-10 days.

The original plants keep growing and you can clone in a closet or cabinet so room is not an issue for cloning for sex.

Your original plant should be around 35-45 days old when you know the sex.

Sexing by clone is the most efficient way to determine the sex from seed. Very little to no stress on the plant. When you sex the whole plant then reveg you are sending mixed signals to the plant and that is not good.

You can get hermies from stressing the plant, not saying it will but it sure can. As if the seed was from a hermie mother then the chance of that seed being hermie is increased. That little stress of sexing the whole plant could be enough to trigger the hermie trait in that plant.

A plant may increase in height by less than a third or more than triple after going 12/12, depending on its strain, the growing method, the growing particulars, and how tall and healthy it is at the time.
